who's insulting who?
The school can't just suspend you for calling someone stupid. It's tax payers' money going on that education and they've taken it from you for no valid reason at all. :shame:

Black History Month Alternatives
In Britain, we are taught about how the slave trade brought the economic prosperity we enjoyed during the Industrial Revolution; that we traded finished goods and weapons to Africa for slaves, which we sent to the Caribbean and used them to farm cotton for the mills in England. This is taught in History classes, and it is reinforced that our economic success was as much down to our dreadful treatment of African slaves as it was down to the working effort of the workers who worked in the mills, the factories and the coal pits in appalling conditions. I don't like racialising this issue. I don't like to look at the world from a British perspective and go "We white Brits mistreat black people". They weren't targeted for being black. They were targeted for being weak and technologically inferior. It was exploitation - racism was just the consequence, not the cause. Instead, I look at the whole picture. The Industrial Revolution was not successful just because of the mistreatment of slaves, it was also successful because whites were treated with scant regard for their working and living conditions as well. The difference is at least white people had some sort of voice eventually through the Suffragette and and Trade Union movements, and had a political party to relate to in the Liberals and later on, the Labour Party. Black slaves didn't, and didn't have a voice until 100 years later when MLK eventually emerged as a leader of their struggle for some sort of equality. That's the view of history we should be teaching. We shouldn't be teaching that treating just black people in the way we did was wrong - we should be teaching that exploiting anyone in that way is wrong. We should be looking at the world today. Single parents, old people, young people, Muslims, Jews, homosexuals, immigrants, women. All of these groups are discriminated or prejudiced against in one way or another. Has slavery even been abolished? No, of course it hasn't. Europe has a massive problem with the 'sex slave trade', where women are forced to pay off their "debts" by offering services as a prosititute. The point of Black History Month, if anything, is to raise awareness of discrimination and the sort of misjustice that stems from it. It's supposed to get people looking at the world around them and realising that discrimination still exists, that it is wrong, and that it needs to be combated. If people are taking Black History Month as a guilt trip, then the point has been lost and needs to be "refocused", so to speak. The point isn't just that black people were mistreated, but the black civil rights movement just epitomises the topic.

GCSE Results Thread, 21st Aug
Oh hell, I know they're easy. It's been a whole year since I've even looked at one and I remember how to do them. I got an A at AS Level. It's just ridiculous when you can pass maths at GCSE level barely being able to do long multiplication. Not that I'm disrespecting anyone's achievements here - you still have to work hard. But they should be more difficult and relevant. Perhaps we could do Decision maths at GCSE level and integrate it with ICT and computing? Anyways, this isn't the place for a debate. Congrats on all the fantastic grades I've seen so far. :

Who's claiming they are? We know they're guilty, we just don't care.

They are easier. While that doesn't take away our achievements, they are easier. Put it this way; my Dad was doing binomial expansions and differentiations at GCSE level. I was doing it at AS, and would have continued it at A2 if I had chosen to do a full A Level. Stuff he did at A Level is now done at degree level.

Racism speculation
Well clearly you and I live on different planets. Despite going to a school where white people were the minority (10%), I've yet to actually hear a person of African decent complain about the slave trade and hold it against me. If there are people saying that, they're in a strict minority and doesn't become justifiable to abandon all efforts to create equality in protest of what those idiots are saying. I don't feel any guilt for the slave trade. I wasn't a part of it. However, I am no better than those slave traders if I see that discrimination still exists in the modern world and choose not to do anything about it. I believe what I believe out of a principle that everyone deserves a right to equal opportunities, not out of guilt or out of a feeling I owe them a debt.

Racism speculation
People like the kid you mentioned don't honestly believe they have a right to do whatever they want because of the slave trade. Surely you have the intelligence to realise they're using it as an excuse to abuse people. You're both being pretty silly if you're honestly suggesting the slave trade was the only form of discrimination against black people. There's still blatant inequality now.

Racism speculation
Well if you want a lesson, we all hail from Babylon, and people emigrated across the world from there. The End. Remind me, when exactly have whites needed to fight for racial equality in the developed world?

Never has a finer sentence been written on here. All Medical Schools are considering it, and most demand the UKCAT (aptitude test). When I went into UCAS, my GCSE grades were not even considered. Universities are looking for what qualities you have as a person and what grades you get at A Level, or whatever qualification you go into next. Getting an A* in Chemistry will not give you an advantage for getting into Medicine at Cambridge if your personality isn't appropriate for being a doctor.

Flag Burning.
I have the same amount of respect for a soldier like Kreig as I do for a nurse working 8 hours a day on the minimum wage. Moreover, I fail to see how questioning what a man is fighting for is disrespectful. We all have the ability to question things and think for ourselves.

Hate on MMORPGS.
Are you looking here for reassurance you're as great as you think you are? If these haters really don't matter to you, then ignore them. It isn't hard to do. If you guys think the outside world is any nicer than people on RuneScape then you're sadly deluded. There will always be people who belittle others in order to create self-confidence. You just have to believe what they're saying is wrong and get on with life.

Olympics 2008
Robbed? What is with this fixation of yours that the US has to come out on top in everything? A silver medal is a fantastic result for any other country. There is no official medals table, as the point is to find the greatest Olympian in each sport, not country overall. However, most judge it by the number of gold medals won, then silvers, then bronze.

Olympics 2008
Sprinting in the Olympics is the equivalent to the Superbowl to the Jamaicans. This is their national sport. Around 40 of their ~50 athletes in the games are sprinters. When a team stops playing because a tackle's been made 45 seconds to the end of the game and there's no timeouts, does anyone complain then because they've not given their all? Surely that's disrespect to your opponents, who want to get on with playing, following jack's logic. When a team wins the Superbowl, and they start celebrating, is that 'rubbing it in' to your opponents? Of course neither of those is true. To think otherwise is just cretinous.

What exactly are you fighting for? Okay, okay, okay, I just wanted to say something here. I don't know if that statement was trying to be mean and rude or simply innocent, but judging from previous posts of yours, I'll assume the former attitude was wanted. Kriegsmier has lain his life down for other humans, and may be in the future. That is worthy of great respect. [/hide] For what exactly? I'm a strong supporter of free-speech and Kriegsmier does not respect that, I do not respect Kriegsmier because he showed non to me. What is Kriegsmier fighting for? because he did not like my free-speech? You're both people who are failing to comprehend that opinions exist outside of your own viewpoint. He doesn't believe in free speech and that his opinion is right because he happens to be a soldier, you don't believe there's any way other than free speech. This argument is going no where anytime soon.

Racism speculation
I love being ginger. I wouldn't have this nickname if I didn't. :P Whenever I get called those terms in the street it really doesn't bother me. It doesn't say a lot about the person giving the 'abuse' - except the fact they can see hair. So it makes them look stupid for pointing out the flippin' obvious, and that's something I exploit to take the Michael out of them in return. I reply with something along the lines of "Oh wow, you're observant aren't you?!" In terms of where I stand with everyone else (social groups and that), I've always been part of a minority. I was one of about 4 people in my year of ~100 at high school who listened to rock. I was always smart in comparison to most other people in my year. Everyone else wanted to go out, get drunk and get girls - I couldn't think of anything I'd rather less do. That's where I like being. I like being at odds with the norm. Having ginger hair just reinforces that, and strangely, it actually gives me confidence.

Despite their scaremongering, it will most likely have no bearing on your life whatsoever, I bet. :P dragoonson, he meant chronologically. A Level results are issued before GCSE results

There's been no terrorist attack on America in the last few weeks. Guess we should just forget about 9/11 then, yeah? [/crazylogic] there is a slight difference between allegations that something will go wrong and the actual threat of terrorism My point remains though. Just because something hasn't happened recently doesn't mean the danger isn't still present. His argument was based on total ignorance to the potential dangers of carrying firearms into places children can get them.
