  1. I love going to live performances. You just don't get the same buzz listening to a single or a live DVD of the concert. I've been to see Franz Ferdinand, Lostprophets and Kaiser Chiefs. All of them were pretty spectacular, being caught up in the crowd and everything, but I think Lostprophets was the one I enjoyed most. Wasn't the best gig, but it was all-standing, and it's better when everyone's standing. :P
  2. It does sound like a bit of a challenge, but if you don't make it into that university then don't worry about it. All Medicine courses are strictly controlled so you'll be taught near enough the same things anyway. It's just the way they teach it that differs from uni to uni. I hope it works out for ya.
  3. There's lots of signature bars for XBox Live flying around the Internet. If you get one for XBox, I demand one for my Wii. The consequence is ironicly long mini-profiles. Having this option in the main profiles though... now that's another matter. ;)
  4. Basic social economics - the majority of people are NOT middle class. That's just a term that's loosely flung about these days to describe anyone with a fancy job. Unless you can live without having to work for a wage, you are not anything above working class. And believe me, without state subsidies, the working class do NOT live comfortably.
  5. I'd rather my tax money go to starving African children than a massive ceremony. While as a socialist I appreciate your concern for global poverty, your argument is sadly based on total naivety. Even with the issue of dictators and regimes aside, simply giving aid to Africa doesn't work - in fact it actually makes things worse. We flood their economy with 'freebies', but all this does is out-compete the few in Africa who were providing those commodities in the first place, putting them out of business, meaning the poverty just hits harder next year. We give them more aid, and the vicious cycle continues. One example is agriculture. We have too much food in this country, so he give literally mountains of food to the Africans in aid. This floods their economy with food, putting their farmers out of business. Because they've less farmers, they have less food and the starvation worsens. If you genuinely want to help Africans, buy products under projects such as the FairTrade scheme, or a charity which actually gives Africans the capability to lift themselves out of poverty. Examples would be groups which build fresh-water wells inside villages, charities which teach villagers how to farm their own produce and provide the seeds to allow them to grow their own food. Groups which construct basic schools to educate children and provide opportunity later on in life. Apart from sending out a principle, this would do nothing to lift Africans out of poverty, sadly. The global economic system we live in simply would not allow such a solution.
  6. Welcome to the Internet, where merely posting on a forum is rewarded with an e-Degree in Psychology. I say no one on this thread has any qualification to say what is and isn't going through the head of a transsexual. To say they have a "psychic" (I lol'd : ) disorder would be like me saying all Americans are neurotic by genetic inheritance. There's just no evidence and it's a totally disgusting claim.
  7. Control and ownership are separate things. I would expect the US to relinquish control once the humanitarian operation is over. It just makes common sense that they should control the ports while the operation is going on, otherwise is would hinder them if the Georgians were still running everything.
  8. The 'Not everyone's a Christian' thing really doesn't scan with you does it? I don't think you can say this is 'right' or 'wrong'. As with all things concerning Medicine it's a balance and there's no black and white answer to this. From an open-minded, agnostic point of view, I don't actually see anything wrong with humans using an artificial method to change someone's gender. We use artificial methods elsewhere in Medicine where it's possibly unneeded - why not here? I have an inkling people are basing their judgements through emotional reaction as opposed to actual common sense. The only thing I would say is that if it's not necessary treatment, don't expect the NHS to pay for it, or a charity if you're living elsewhere.
  9. Try as you must to convince yourself, online with no communication is horrible. The reason why I love going online is because I know there's a person behind the character. Those "noobs" (who the hell uses this word?) are the minority because I have Xbox live and play online (Halo3 nonetheless, other TIFers on my friends list can prove this) and don't even often see them. I'll confess, there's nothing more entertaining than a Yank screaming down his headphone, while charging straight at you on GoW. *Pull out shotgun* BANG! Stupid boy... Bear in mind I don't even have an Xbox, I play the game for like one hour a month at my mate's.
  10. Correct me if I'm wrong but i think it goes A*,A,B,C,D,E,F,U,X U = Unclassified = Complete Fail. X = Absent Don't forget the G grade. Anything from C or above is classed as a 'pass' in the GCSEs. If you decide to go onto the path of further education, A-Levels are generally the next step before university. GCSEs are generally taken by 11-16 year olds, and A-Level by 16-18 year olds. Although you can resit at any time. A-Level Grade boundaries (%): A = 80+ B = 70-79 C = 60-69 D = 50-59 E = 40-49 Fail = Below 40 A-E is a pass. That's right, you can pass an A-Level knowing only 40% of the course. :P I got my results, AAB. The B was in Biology meaning I didn't get into med school this year. HOWEVER... I got a deferred entry for 2009, guaranteed since I was so close and since I passed CoPE and got an A in General Studies. I'm over the moon. :D Congrats to everyone who's got the grades they wanted.

  12. i'm sorry, but that's really stupid... can't they see russia can justify it's attacks, this is just asking for trouble... When the EU is talking with Moscow about peace (the French FM - the French currently hold the presidency of the EU), and quite a large chunk of NATO is made up of the EU, it does seem strange George would decide to 'go it alone' in what is a direct confrontation. And some of you think Obama would make a bad commander-in-Chief? He can't do any worse than this guy... he has been a disaster since Day One.:?
  13. If you're referring to our universities instead of our colleges (sixth-forms), then some courses have UCAS point requirements but in fairness they are ridiculously easy to achieve. Most university courses just set grade requirements. mitochondrion - by that name I'm guessing one subject was Biology? :P Congrats on getting the grades! :
  14. ...and GCSE results of course in a week's time. Pardon my ignorance. :P We do this sort of thing every single year so I figured I'll take the privilege since this year it's my turn to open up that dreaded envelope and see my future written a few simple letters. 14 years of education, and they break the news to me with digits I learnt at the age of 4. It's staggering when you think about it like that. I'm going in at 10am tomorrow. I need an A in Biology, and an A and a B in Chemistry and Modern History. I'm so nervous about my Biology result - it's the only subject I've struggled on and I need it to get into Medical School. :ohnoes: Grade inflation has risen (for the 26th year in a row... it used to be that only 5% of the population got an A  ). Remember the old advice... DON'T PANIC! Although that's not really helping me with my nerves at the moment. So, post your results here, and your feelings about them. Good luck to everyone picking up their results tommorow! :
  15. Take a game with Middlesbrough vs. United. Middlesbrough just play out for 0-0 draw because the 1 pt against a big team means something. It requires no skill at all to defend - just stick 5 in the midfield and choke off Ronaldo, Anderson, Nani and Giggs. Without the ball, Tevez and Rooney can't do a thing. On the other hand, Middlesbrough might get a lucky break and score. That really requires no skill at all, and those matches are so frustratingly boring. :wall:
  16. I should hasten to add this is only a humanitarian operation, but it does involve military ships. I doubt the US is seriously trying to give a fight to the Russians. No country in the history of mankind has ever survived fighting a war on three separate fronts. Look at how Germany was defeated in WWII. That is the prospect the US would be facing, only the fight would be thousands of miles away from home, and right on the doorstep of a country who could wipe out any force the US sent to the Caucasus in weeks. Not even Bush, hell, not even McCain would be that stupid, surely to god. What is worrying though is that Bush risked jeopardising any relations left with Russia and Putin in order to carry out this operation. People talk about the 21st Century being about China's economy versus the US's economy, in a fight to be the world superpower. It's looking as if Russia might have something to say about that, and that's worrying. :|
  17. I haven't noticed any more military activity around where I live, and Preston is home to one of the UK's main aircraft producers. But the EU is coming out with some fighting talk against Russia here.
  18. Oh no, now I am genuinely scared. US forces to deliver Georgia aid: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7559252.stm
  19. I simply have a problem with organisations, institutions and people who make unsubstantiated claims. As for the satellite thing, how much do you want to exaggerate that claim? You can barely make out people's cars on Google Earth, let alone their facial features, unless of course they have a massive sign on a hat saying, "Look NASA! I'm a terrorist!!!".
  20. I also remember them saying they locate people stepping outside their houses using satellite technology. So where's Osama then? I find little evidence to believe in this. Above all else, even if it was true, why would they broadcast it to a world which still believes such technology is impossible? It makes no sense.
  21. Take the URL given in the email, and put it in tags just as would with any other image. For example, with my custom signature above: [img=http://sign.tip.it/265/eefaf81c6a.png]
  22. I personally believe they're arrogant in regards to foreign policy in order to overcompensate for that vulnerability. It's not an ignorance so much as a phobia of losing the grand American way of life. Logical reasoning is thrown out of the window, in favour of whatever means necessary to secure their utopia's future. They scaremonger us by giving a "Us or the evil Chinese communists" picture of the world, whilst pursuing to lecture us in the lessons of 'freedom' and 'democracy'. In case you can't tell, I don't think much of American views on the wider world. A third of them can't even point to the country they've been occupying for 4 years. That's why Obama is desperately needed to give a dose of reality. I can't see how anyone could possibly see using nuclear weapons as a way of winning a war, especially when the opposing country has a fair few of them as well.
  23. No, I like to catch the bees for money.
  24. I think it would be worth a try to bring in a variation of soccer, like maybe 8 players with little subs - to make for a more free flowing game. Kinda like what was done with cricket when they brought in the Twenty20. It's also worked well with Rugby 7s (which perhaps would even make a better event than football in the Olympics). That's certainly made Rugby Union more exciting. I don't see why not. Try persuading the FA, the managers, the clubs, the players and the fans that though. The amount of conservatism in football makes any change near impossible. Everyone's already up in arms about the 'Respect' for referees campaign and it's only had one game!
  25. Firstly, you aren't actually paid to compete in the Olympics, other than to cover training (etc.). Representing your country is a just reward. Football at the Olympic Games has never been as good as football in the Premier League or any of the other European leagues. That's always been the case. It's two teams going out to defend so they don't lose, and score a goal on the counter. Makes for a dull game. same goes for the World Cup and the EURO cup. Personally, I can't see why football is even in the Olympic Games. There's no set criteria for an event to be included, but football receives more than its fair share of media attention and global publicity. Compared to a sport like Archery which has practically no attention, it simply does not need the Olympics to survive. Plus we have a World Cup, which frankly makes the Olympics redundant. :? There are more exciting sports out there. But a Liverpool vs. Man Utd derby at Old Trafford can hardly be described as dull. If you're talking actual rules: bring substitutions back down to 2, and only have 2 spare players on the bench. That'll get rid of the 'tactical' play that chokes this game. Reduce the amount of players to make more space to play the ball.
