I re-registered my e-mail about a week ago after I got "hacked." However, when I logged in again today, it showed that my e-mail was "no longer registered." I am sure that nobody has accessed my RuneScape account. Does anyone know what might have happened? For the record, I did click the "Email Registration" button yesterday, but I didn't actually set a new e-mail.

I thought it was 8,000 bots a week. Or did I remember wrong?

This is a bit off-topic, but I love your sig, pal2002. :D

Does anyone how effective are the vexillums, compared to an east-pointing marker plant?

I wonder if the upcoming "items kept on death" changes will affect the chance of getting a drop when a bot dies. I know that players will be in limbo until they choose what items they want to retain, after which their gravestone will appear. But what if the bot just stands there? Will the gravestone never apear, or will the player have a limited time to choose the items they want to keep?

Hey, I remember you! You almost 3-hit me back in 2002!

I got two more kills yesterday, but the drops were pretty meager (a bit less than 900 lobsters, as well as a few swordfish and tuna).

I spent a couple of hours at Karamja today. Most of the bots were too fast for the scorpions, although I managed to kill three of them. The first one seemed to have just started, since I only got 23 unnoted raw tuna and a few hundred GPs. It's possible that someone had looted the notes, but I don't think I saw any looters. The second one was the best: I got 2,920 raw lobsters from it. The third one apparently just started as well, but I did manage to get 128 raw lobsters. Not bad, I'd say, but it's also pretty time-consuming.

At a quick glance, humans and bots do seem indistinguishable. Iin the strictest sense, however, that is pretty far from the truth. The fundamentals difference between humans and computers is that the latter lacks human traits, most notably emotion, reasoning and creativity. For instance, if I were to have a conversation with another mature player, we could talk about subjects like philosophy and relationship advice. Current bots cannot do that. Or, here's a more practical example: suppose a new mini-game is released tomorrow. Any human player who reads the instructions a few times would know how to play it. However, even an advanced bot would not be able to "learn" the mini-game on its own; the bot's author has to update its code first. Just my two cents.

Admin message to people posting in this thread; Please ensure you do not admit to breaking RS rules/discuss details of when you have. This topic is simply about whether you have been tempted to, not if you have! Thanks. :) To the mods: I hope this thread is not considered encouraging others to break rules. If it is, then I apologize in advance. --- In the aftermath of the Penguin Hide and Seek glitch in January 2009, Paul Gower acknowledged that bug abuse can be very tempting: In a game as competitive as RuneScape, people will sometimes desire to use illicit methods to get ahead of others. That having been said, have you ever been tempted to break a rule for personal gains? Personally, I am happy to say that I have never actually broken any major rules (except when I almost got banned for a week for dropping the f-bomb on the RSOF, but that was when I was a noob). However, I've had to resist temptations quite a few times. Macros: I remember back when people started using a bot called Rune-Bot, which communicated with the server directly. I was tempted to test it out, but I am glad I didn't because those who used it got their stats wiped the next day. Good thing I followed the rules! RWT: Admittedly, the thought of selling my gold for real money has crossed my mind a few times. However, since Jagex frequently cracks down on real-world trading, I figured that it wasn't worth the risk of losing such a good character. Even if RWT wasn't easily detectable, I ultimately wouldn't have felt good doing it. Now that I have a real job, RWT seems even more pointless. Bug abuse: I've never really found out how a bug worked before Jagex fixed it. The only major exception was the "mu" bug from February 2009 that caused people's clients to crash. I was tempted to crash a high-level player's CC channel in retaliation for being kicked out of it earlier. However, I also asked myself, "What if an innocent player was fighting a dangerous monster and loses 30 million GP worth of equipment?" I would have felt extremely bad, so I didn't do it. On a somewhat related note, I've also declined "dirty" items (those that I knew were illicitly obtained) on more than on occasion. Has anyone else ever been in similar situations?

I'm happy to see that Jagex is finally putting their foot down on this issue. It's too bad we can't mow down all those bots with an M2 Browning machine gun. :P

You guys have a good point. I think a more accurate description would be, "bots are now virtually indistinguishable from human players."

Smoking. 'Nuff said.

Shortly after the display name update, I could add players by their original username, and my friends list would automatically show the new name. Similarly, if I enteir their old usernames on the hiscores, the display names would be shown instead. However, it seems that I can no longer do so. For example, I have a friend whose original username was Sarah_Devil0 but has changed it since then. Now, when I tried adding her, I get a message saying that the player does not exist. Adding her current display name works, though. So is it no longer possible to add players by their original nams if they had changed it a long time ago? If so, is there a way to find out someone's current character name by knowing only their old one?

Back in 2005, I killed a bunch of bots in RSC by dropping trails of feathers/arrows/runes and luring them to the hobgoblins (RuneScape really needs a "Drop 1" option). Unfortunately, the bots in RS2 seem to be a lot harder to fool, and I've never had any success in killing them. Maybe some of you bot hunters can give me some advice?

As I mentioned in another thread, I got "hacked" a few days ago. The person deleted the e-mail associated with my account, so I'm trying to add it back. However, it's been several hours, and I still haven't received my activation code. I also tried resending it a few times, all to no avail. Has anyone else ever experienced this? And yes, I did check my spam folder. edit: I got it to work after using another e-mail address. I guess the problem was with my provider (Go Daddy).

A while ago, I started working on a list of future predictions for RuneScape. The list is available here: http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/User:Ixfd64/future What do you all think? Suggestions? Corrections? Flames?
-
I think random events that involve Turing tests would be a good choice.
-
Thanks for the suggestions, Jaffy1. However, the downside of changing display names is that it may confuse friends, especially those who haven't played in a long time. For example, I've often had to ask friends who have changed their display names to identify themselves after coming back from long breaks. I know that some IM users will block/delete unfamiliar people on their buddy list, so I'd imagine that the same goes for RuneScape. Personally, I do not do this, but I obviously can't say the same for my friends. User page, not article. I'm not that famous!

My RuneScape account got hacked a few days ago. I was trying to enter the April quiz contest last night when I noticed that I was unable to log in. Since I was able to access all of my other accounts, I figured that I had been "hacked." When I recovered my account about half an hour later, I noticed that my bank PIN was just seven hours away from getting deleted. In addition, my friends list had been cleared, and my default CC was set to a channel called "Team Hax." The good news is, I didn't lose any valuables. Phew! *kisses bank PIN* On the other hand, it's going to be a pain in the @$# to add all of my friends back. I did search for my name on some well-known cheat sites but could find no mention of anyone bragging about "hacking" me, so I'm not sure why I was picked as a target. When I first got "hacked" in April 2003, I was fairly well known at that time because I was only the 40th person to get level 99 cooking. But since level 99 skills are very common these days, I don't think it was my stats that made me a target. However, I do have the distinction of being one of the first 2000 players to sign up, as well as a former player moderator. From what I've seen, these are considered valuable targets for account thieves. My password was alphanumeric and had 11 characters, so I think it would have been very hard to guess. But then again, RuneScape passwords aren't that secure because they aren't case-sensitive and no longer support punctuation. HijackThis found no suspicious programs, and my recent virus scans had come up clean, so it couldn't have been a keylogger. So I guess the "hacker" had guessed my password recovery answers. Admittedly, one of them could be found on my Wikipedia page, and two others weren't that hard to guess. I mean, just because I never explicitly told people what my favorite vacation spot was doesn't mean people couldn't deduce it from reading my blog, etc. Gotta love social engineering. Incidentally, my AIM account also got hacked about two weeks ago, although I'm not sure if it had anything to do with this. Lessons learned: 1. Don't set security questions whose answers can be easily deduced, even if they are not mentioned explicitly. 2. Similarly, when posting blog entries, etc., make sure that you don't accidentally answer a security question. That having been said, was there anything else I could have done to prevent this? I also have two other questions: 1. If I recover my account using the "stolen" option (as opposed to forgetting my password), will this automatically flag my account for investigation? 2. I know that Jagex does not give back stolen items. However, will they restore my friends list? I don't think I can recall all 100 names off the top of my head.

I'm currently F2P, but I'm not sure I want to find out how much time I've spent on the game. :o
