Big Brother Is Watching
This reminds me of something that happened many moons ago: I was minding my own business while some idiot nearby kept advertising a scam site. Like the OP, I was getting really annoyed, so I said sarcastically, "Go to [website] to get scammed!" Surprisingly, nothing happened to me. Oh, how the times have changed.

did I miss a mass ban?
During the last few weeks, there have been a lot of bots (I think) at the willow trees in Draynor, and it was very difficult to compete with them. However, the number of them seems to have gone down a lot in the last few days. So did I miss a mass ban or something? :-) I checked the RuneScape website but could find no mention of any such action.

Big Brother Is Watching
I agree that it's not a good idea to joke about this things. It's just like how you shouldn't joke about hijacking a plane in real life.

This was three years overdue. I'm glad Jagex has started picking up some common sense again.

Divine intervention and close brushes with death
Have you ever been in one of those situations in which you avoided major trouble in a way that could only be explained by "divine intervention," as if some higher force was guiding you out of a jam? I've had a few: 1) Some of you may remember Azn Purity, who was a well known PK'er in the RuneScape Classic days. Back then, he (among other well-known PK'ers) was known for "3-hitting" other players, that is, killing them in three hits. Well, I was returning from a greater demon trip (greater demons only existed in the Wilderness at that time) when Azn Purity attacked me. He hit me for 27, and then 32 (or something along those numbers). Fortunately, his third hit missed, and I was able to get away. 2) Those who have played since 2002 may remember the first "mass ban" in May 2002, in which about 2,000 players who used Rune-Bot got their accounts wiped. I was still a noob at the time, and I was very tempted to try the bot; in fact, I even downloaded it! However, I had heard that it was lagging a lot that day, so I didn't use it for that reason alone. The next day, everyone who had used the bot within the last 24 hours were wiped. I am so glad I followed the rules (although I was still a bit nervous because I had downloaded it). 3) One time, I was pretty low on health while I was in the ice cave. I wandered to the entrance that led to the skeletal wyverns, and foolishly ignoring the warning, I entered it without any protection. As soon as I did, I was hit by one of their magical attacks. Fortunately, it was a zero, or I would have ended up dead otherwise.

24-Nov-2010 - Tasks and Skill Targets
Yay, that worked! Thanks for your help. :) I was killing the rats in the castle, which didn't work for some reason. edit: Another strange thing: the task did not disappear from my task panel until I logged out and back in. It seems that the new task system is a bit buggy.

24-Nov-2010 - Tasks and Skill Targets
I can't seem to unlock the "Am I a Blademaster Yet?" task. I've killed a rat using all four combat styles, and I've even repeated it several times, to no avail. Is the task b0rked?

Jagex's new bot punishment: Level resetting
I personally think that Jagex should use level resetting as a penalty - to an extent. On one hand, I believe the punishment should fit the crime; I have always considered it very harsh to permanently ban or stat-wipe a player just because they gained a few hundred thousand EXP illicitly. However, I also think that there should be some sort of deterrent to macro use, and just the removal of illegally gained EXP isn't strong enough to be an effective deterrent. I think a good choice would be: If the player gained more than 10% of their total EXP through macros, then they should be banned immediately. Otherwise, the player should receive an EXP reduction on the first offense, and then a ban on the second. Just my two Baht.

Symantec Endpoint Protection firewall interfering with file sharing
I recently set up my Windows XP laptop to allow file sharing so that I could easily copy files to my MacBook Pro. However, Symantec Endpoint Protection always blocks access attempts from the other computer. I added my MacBook Pro's IP and MAC addresses to the whitelist, but it didn't help. I also set the firewall to allow all incoming traffic, but this works only some of the time. The only way I could reliably access the shared files is to disable Networ Threat Protection, which I don't want to do. Below are my firewall settings: Anyone know what I should change? Thanks.

If you could bring back one thing from the past what would it be?
Definitely unrestricted trade for me.

recording audio, video and voice
I am interested in recording my computer's audio and video output, along with my voice (like in software tutorials and "Let's Play" videos). CamStudio does exactly this, but there's a minor problem: although it records my voice pretty well (using the microphone option), my computer's audio is barely audible at playback. Cranking up the system volume or the microphone seems to help a bit, but I can only increase it so much until I get an ear-splitting audio feedback. The speaker option records the audio very well, but it ignores any microphone input. Is there any way to reliably record both the computer's audio and my voice? I'm guessing that one solution is to use an external microphone (to remove the audio feedback) with the "line in" option. Has anyone ever tried this? Thanks. I am using Windows XP, by the way.

How to become a Jagex Administrator:
The last time I checked, Jagex did not accept "telepresence" employees. However, that was a few years ago; the policy could have changed since then.

WTF is wrong with jagex....
This happened to me shortly after I started RuneScape. I was really annoyed, since 5k was a lot back then!

EA/Activision Told Jagex To [bleep] Off
I don't have a positive impression of EA when it comes to online games. Remember how the company shut down Earth & Beyond a few years ago?

Are there any "old school" players still out there?
I still play, but only once in a few days. By the way, I chopped my own logs for level 99 firemaking, simply because I wanted to save money. :D

"I want a girlfriend/boyfriend", and other such relationship advice
This isn't really a "relationship" question per se, but does anyone else find it awkward to approach random girls/guys in front of family members? As long as I know a girl pretty well (e.g., if she is a family friend), I can talk to her with absolutely no problem. If it's a girl I'm not familiar with, I can still often make small talk with her. However, it's a different story when any of our parents are present. My mother generally doesn't mind when I chat with random girls (her advice is that I should act natural and not be creepy), and my father actually encourages it from time to time. However, I find it very awkward to start a conversation in front of my parents, and it feels even more weird if the girl's parents are there, even though it is unlikely that they will mind either (they may even be flattered because their daughter is seen as attractive). There are a few exceptions, though. I am perfectly fine with talking to girls if: 1. I think she is affliated with any of my schools (if she's wearing a shirt with my school's mascot, I will her if she went to that school) 2. If we are just passing each other, I will say "hi" to her 3. I am in an environment where people are expected to socialize (e.g., a party) Even so, I can rarely manage to hold a conversation longer than five lines. Is anyone else in the same boat? I'm guessing this awkwardness is caused by the "don't talk to strangers" mentality that is often instilled into the minds of young children. Another reason is probably the concern that the parents may think, "What the heck does this creepy guy want with my daughter?" Of course, we shouldn't avoid a conversation with someone just because we don't know them; after all, that's how friends are made sometimes! :) By the way, some people say it is "inappropriate" and "disrespectful" to flirt with a girl in front of their parents. While it is obviously a bad idea to make sexual advances in front of a girl's parents, I don't really see anything wrong with just chatting with her. In any case, I find that making small talk with the parents beforehand usually does a lot to break the ice. Any thoughts?
