New question about monitor/keyboard etc. costs
The mouse is a Logitech one... We already have a tiny Dell that my dad got for like $75 bucks that we're considering setting up for her. Can I get an estimate of what a decent monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers will cost and good brands to get? The computer is an XP, a Dell SX270, 2.4 GHz CPU, 20GB hard drive, 1024 Mb RAM. Also has a 'Nic Card', whatever that is.

what you wear?
I buy from whereever happens to have clothes that fit me that I like. I hate jeans... And I wear random logo/character shirts... I've got a D&D one, a Link one, a couple from my high school, a Geek Squad one... You get the point. Buying things on clearance is fun, I once got three pairs of pants for like $20 at Old Navy, and I got two pairs of brand name shoes for $70 (Nike skate shoes for $25, but it was buy one get one half off, and New Balance running shoes for $50) at Shoe Carnival! I hardly ever buy clothing online, if I do it's something I can't find anywhere else, a certain coat or a bathing suit.

New question about monitor/keyboard etc. costs
[hide=Old Question]My grandma desperately needs a new computer. The one she has right now is like ten years old and has Windows 98 on it... So I found a nice one that's only $400ish, and I just need to convince her to buy it. ;) But I've got a few questions on the laptop. Specs are below, the circled bits pertain to my questions. My question about Vista is: Can the Home Basic edition skin go back to the XP theme? (I think it doesn't even have Areo, am I right?) If it can't can Home Premium? (which would add $30 to the price, is it worth it?) I'm not comfortable with the Vista Aero interface and I know my grandma will not enjoy it either. Then, what does Microsoft Works contain? What AV and firewall should we get her, and is that mouse worth $30?[/hide]

Free Application Guide
I noticed there wasn't one of these, so I thought I'd compile a list of free programs, where you can download them, and reviews. If you want to add your review/rating, just reply with a link to the program's site (if it's not already on the list), your rating and your review, and I'll edit it into the first post. Graphics/Art/Etc -The GIMP 9/10 - This is a great free graphics program that runs on pretty much any computer. It's like Photoshop without the cost, and a ton of fun extras you can download. It's compatible with PS brushes and a variety of file formats. My only complaint is it takes a while to start up and is known to randomly freeze up/shut down. -Blender 3D 7/10 - A free 3-D modelling program, it requires that you also download the Python scripting language. I haven't used it extensively, but if you can learn the controls and deal with the tiny interface, it's a very useful program. -Alice 9/10 - A fun animation/scripting program that you can download free from Carnigie Mellon. It comes with prebuilt models which you can add into a world and animate in various ways. You can also make your own and download more. It takes up a large amount of space however, and once again takes a while to start up. -Apophysis 10/10 - A free fractal flame creator. It doesn't take a lot of space on your computer (until you start rendering the fractals). You don't have to do anything to create them, but you can get/write scripts to create specific fractals and you can change a lot of the details of the fractal (size, transformations, etc.) Word-Processing/'Office'/Etc -OpenOffice.org 3/10 - I really hate this suite of programs [Writer (like MSWord), Impress! (PowerPoint/Publisher), and Calc (Excel)] because if you're used to the layout of Microsoft Office these are totally different and lack a lot of features. The most useful aspect of the programs is the ability to save in almost any format, including PDF. Random Things -LEGO Digital Designer 7/10 - A random fun program for building with LEGO bricks on your computer. It's also useful if you want to do some 3D modelling but don't want to bother with learning how to use Blender/etc. because it's as simple as building with LEGOs! Your brick choices are somewhat limited and it allows you to do some things that you can't in real life. Also after finishing a model you can upload it to the LEGO site and buy it if you want.

In-Crowd or Out-Crowd?
We don't really have an 'in-crowd', because we're a rather small school (maybe 1000 kids in our highschool?.. about 250-300 kids per class) and most everybody's nice or at least tolerable to the others. You do generally stay in your groups of friends at lunch though... And there are 'popular' people, although they're usually really nice people. Otherwise, I could be the unpopular popular kid because I don't hang out with the popular kids but they'd readily accept me as one of their own because I'm like a walking encyclopedia.

If this applies to you, answer!
I'm just not a fan of talking babies. I liked Doug and Hey Arnold! though (and the Wild Thornberrys to some extent), and was Double Dare 2000 on in the 90s, or was that just early 2000s?
-
If this applies to you, answer!
^ No, Under Pressure. Ice Ice Baby was just a wannabe impersonator. Old school Nick, even the late 90s shows were good, I miss Angry Beavers especially, though I always hated Rugrats.

What diseases run in your family?
Diabetes, type 1 and risk for type 2, as I have type one and so does my cousin, and my grandfather has type 2. Vision problems abound, as well as knee/general joint problems, and foot problems. And probably high blood pressure/heart disease though I'm not sure about that one.

Jagex reaches out to Tip.It Discussion
This is pretty great, maybe Jagex can get back some of their players that they've lost to the fansites-that-aren't-fansites (the whole General Discussions area is full of people who don't really play RS anymore...)

ipwnage4lyfe: [img=http://fc96.deviantart.com/fs43/f/2009/075/6/6/ipwnage4lyfe_Sig_by_hawkxs.png] Knotch: I'll start on it, the ten images with hyperlinks thing isn't a great way to go about that; I'll take a look, you'll probably end up with five... But I'll definitely try for ten... Oh I can do five above five below (duh had I read it I would have noticed. ) so yeah, I'll start on that. (although I'd rather not do the Bot Download/Free Music ones as that's kind of illegal...)

A question about writing to you here
In the Varrock Library, we don't really care whether it's fiction or not, it's true most of it's fiction, but we welcome whatever happens our way as long as time has been spent on it. :D

What Social Class are you?
I'm gonna say middle, although where we live we'd probably be seen as upper middle... Even though we own some pretty crappy cars we've got a nice house. (lol 3 computers + various laptops my dad has for work) My dad's (basically) an IT guy for for a big company, he supports their marketing server things and gets really nice insurance... My mom is a teacher's assistant. We did get a Wii for Christmas last year, and we're going to San Diego on spring break, so we're doing pretty (very...) well.

C/C on Sig/Avvy Combo
I'm not really a big fan of either of them, any advice on how to make them better? And the sidebars on the sig are interesting, I'm not sure how that happened...
