Browser speeds
I can't say that Chrome is something fantastic for me, wasn't any speedier than FF or Opera when i tried it. Opera has so many nice features and settings that it will take something really special to make me go away from it.

Hard Drive Fail
Ok, i'm not finding anything about your specific computer when i searched the web. It would be damn easier if it worked and you start it so you could download cpu-z lol. Anyways, you're gonna have to open up the computer (don't touch anything, but be grounded just for safety). [hide=Locate pci-e] [/hide] There's also a possibility of using a pci lane, but not worth investing in such a card if you don't have one (unless you find one for like 20$). Also, take a picture on the power supply or write down what it says on it (don't want you to blow up the psu). [hide=Psu, copy or photo the text on the side of yours][/hide]

Run Slax, then you'd see a boost in performance hehe =)

Graphics Cards
Yes it would. Some cards will be able to use x amount of mb from the ram too, but not all cards.

Hard Drive Fail
To whoever said that she should open up her computer: That's flashing the BIOS, it won't help in this case. And you forgot the most important piece - You should always be grounded when you do such stuff. To me it sounds like something has failed with the graphics. Do you know if this computer has an add-on graphics card or if it's using the integrated graphics? Because my idea is, if your motherboard has integrated graphics on it but is using a add-on card you could remove, or vice versa, if it's using integrated you could try a add-on card (but don't try this yet). Could you give me the year (and month if you remember) you bought this computer so i could search and see what you got?

Graphics Cards
No, they relieve the cpu when you play a movie and offer quite good performance. Nvidia 8-3/4 series? There's barely any difference in performance between Nvidia's and ATI's performance in video-playback at those lower-end cards (altho ATI usually is a tiny bit better). If she's getting the 512mb card will help along in the playback. It's noth price-worthy for her to get a better card than this... Since she'd have to change the psu aswell, in such a case a custom-build will be much better.

Graphics Cards
Most likely not, but i have no idea what dell uses. Call their support and ask them. Yes? It has a hdmi port so you don't need to use a converter which is always nice. It's a good card, i just put it up for a second idea, but you're the one that decides what you want.

Graphics Cards
Uh, agp? It's not 2003 lol. I've only seen the 3450 with pci-e, so i presume that's what dells motherboard is using. Just make sure it's 16 lane pci-e.

I don't know if you'd brake the warranty by putting it in yourself, but you'd save 30$ as you say if you buy it from newegg or such a shop. Yes you can choose a better card, but then you'd need to change the psu too, since companies like Dell only put in the minimal required psu so it runs stable (i dont think they change the psu just for 3450 which doesn't use much power). And it's easy, locate the pci-e lane, (if theres anything covering the pci-e interferance such as plastic just remove it) push the card into the slot gently with even power on both sides, lock it by screwing the screw into the the hole in the case, check that it's properly attached and then put the side-case back on (ground yourself before doing this, and if you're worried about statics you can buy a esd wrist strap and clip it onto the chassi-metal). http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814121287 Runs a little bit cooler than 3450 (not that these card run hot at all but an improvement never the less), hdmi out. Cards like these are not gaming cards tho. The only difference i know of between hdmi and dvi is that hdmi carries sound too while dvi doesn't. ATI and Nvidia uses different techniques for their cards, so one can not look at, say the sp's, to try and find which one is faster than the other.

Which brand should i trust the most for a quality desktop
So the computer died after 7 years of use? That's common with any brand of computer. (I don't care about peoples stories saying not true I've had the same HP for 10 years ect.) I hate when people make these threads because it's all opinion and stories of a computer breaking from one person. You have no idea if the problem was a manufacturing defect or the person was an idiot. My cousin says HP computers suck because he dropped one down the stairs and it wouldn't work right after that. My school just replaced all the computers with HPs and we have had less helpdesk tickets than before. Both are true stories, but you see what I mean? I could cherry pick stories to make any brand look good or bad. Just get the fastest computer you can get from any brand for your money. I never said the one from 98 was bad. I included the thing with the screen just because it's a sorta "funny" thing that it actually went up in smoke. The guy asked for an opinion, i gave my opinion. Am i then not gonna give my opinion because i might tick someone off? No. I'll say what i've experienced, and then if someone choses to not care about it or not, it's up to them.

Which brand should i trust the most for a quality desktop
Just avoid Packard Bell and Compaq! Had a PB computer from 98, which worked great (until the screen literally burned up in 2005). Their support don't have a clue what you're talking about if you are getting a bit technical about things, and on the one we got atm i've had to disable alot of features (which freed-up about 100mb ram).

video game products - a major untapped marketing potential?
None of those, except arguably Sonic, are known by a significant part of the general population. Back when I was a kid, adults who didn't even play video games were drinking coffee from Mario/Luigi mugs and buying their kids Nintendo-themed school bags and pencils. Characters like Snake from MGS or any FF character have no appeal outside the target audience of a few million hardcore gamers and enthusiasts. Nintendo characters like Mario are known in islamic markets, hindu markets, christian markets, know no land boundaries or language boundaries. Don't get me wrong; Every console has it's golden games. In reality though, Nintendo has always been the flagship of gaming that has always had recognised characters. Not sure if you're old enough to remember, but back in the early-mid 90's Super Mario even had a pretty popular TV-show/sitcom, plus a very long running cartoon series and movies. Ahahahaha, i remember i saw some Mario movie in the late 90s i think. But there was more than one? Had no idea. Great video game, not so great movie... Hehe.

If you were President, what would you change/add?
Which country and what is immigration causing? Sweden. 99 485 immigrated last year. It's so damn stupid. We are loosing jobs (and we'll see what happens with Volvo and Saab in the near future), companies moving to Poland or China while we keep accepting around 100k people each year. Crime rates keeping going up. And the even worse thing is, that the immigrations has failed (of course, politicians don't admit it). The immigrants usually get put into the Stockholm, Malmö or Gothenburg area, while almost none get sent more north. They get sent to these areas where it's not a good percentage of getting a job, while there are other places that would be able to give them jobs. Just take Rosengård in Malmö as an example, ambulances and firefighters don't go there anymore if they don't get back-up by the police, because people living there disturbs the work and even throw stones. So i think it should be stopped, because the unemployee-rate just keeps on rising (especially with the current financial state).

Music from 2008
Amon Amarth - Twilight of the Thunder God Opeth - Watershed Haven't listned to the new Darkthrone album yet, only heard a couple of song, sounded pretty good. Otherwise, not much good has come out this year. (i didn't like the Pain album) Hopefully we'll see a new Hypocrisy album next year.

Need a new desktop
I guess something like this, you haven't included anything about gaming so i presume you don't plan on playing more advanced stuff than rs. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6883103151 You could also go to your local computer shop and ask them to build you a custom desktop if you don't know how to build it yourself, for a pretty good deal. Pryo, i think Mylez bought from Dabs.com... Maybe pm him and ask how their service is. I think another shop is overclockers.co.uk.

Is my 350W PSU good enough for 8800GT?
No, pre-made pc's usually just have a psu that will work with the things that are put in. Maybe if it would be a FSP 350w it could work, but it isn't. And no idea in getting a 8800GT new, buy a used one or buy 9800GT or HD 4830.
