  1. Being Politically Correct is a great thing to an extent. There are times where it does offend someone and just because your particular race hasn't been discriminated against for hundreds of year and you're not offended, doesn't mean someone else won't be. It's called having decency and not being an insensitive jerk. I do agree that sometimes it gets out of hand, but for the most part, it's a good thing.
  2. Most of those lists were compiled by comedy critics and fellow comedians, not the average trailer-park viewer. It doesn't matter if you don't need someone else to tell you about authority and Christianity, the fact that he challenges it to a mainstream audience is where respect comes in. You don't have to like him to respect him. Just the same as in music. I hate a lot of bands, but I can respect them for their talent. His ultra-cynical delivery reminds me of your ultra-cynical delivery in every post; unimpressive.
  3. Alright, well, I'll try to make this quite simple. I've been drumming pretty much my entire life. Both drum set and marching snare drum. I play in my own band and I'm on a World Class Independent-A drum line from Minnesota called TCAI (Twin Cities Area Independent). The first thing you're going to want to do is develop basic ground work for your hands. Get a practice pad, any will do for beginning. Do some 8 and 8s. Eight eighth notes on your right hand, then eight on your left hand. ALWAYS USE A METRONOME. http://www.vicfirth.com/education/rudiments.html Here will be your bible for developing your hands in the beginning. Don't expect to be able to play all of them. I literally have hundreds of exercises and over 10 books that I can email you if you want, just PM me. As for getting a drum set, I personally have a 1989 9-Piece Pearl Export Series. It's a beauty and I love it. I would probably recommend something affordable, but definitely not cheap quality. A 5 piece will do. Cymbals I would honestly go used if you can. If there's a Music-Go-Round near you, check that out because they don't sell crappy cymbals there and you can get them for good discount. By the way, Sabian cymbals are NOT bad. They are basically Zildjian's little brother. I personally have played pretty much every brand and type of cymbal out there. Sabians are just fine. Any specific questions, PM me. I'll be able to answer pretty much any question. Oh, and whatever you do, do NOT practice double kick until you have mastered a single bass drum. And tell your tutor to teach you traditional grip ;) It looks beautiful on a kit. Edit: Here's what I'd recommend for a practice pad. The second one (double sided): http://www.vicfirth.com/products/pads.html
  4. It's called get a pair of headphones. Buy some isolation headphones so you can't hear him and he can't hear what you're listening to. My Mom got frustrated when I used to live at home (considering my band practices there as well) so I bought them out of consideration. My roommate particularly likes me having them. Besides, it will probably sound better than crappy computer speakers anyway.
  5. I find it quite funny how you justify almost all of your arguments on here by using "lol" unless you get called out on the topic. Using a deliberately out of place acronym doesn't make what you have to say any more true. You don't use any logic at all. I don't understand how you can have such disdain for a comedian who challenged his audience to use their heads and question norms along with authority while delivering it in a distinctly unique way.
  6. Yeah, Bill Hicks was terrible.
  7. Well Sublime is usually better when you're high, but whenever I'm at a party there is always some sort of giant sing along of "Santeria". I don't really like that song, but meh, whatever. It's good when I'm drunk.
  8. Yeah, Dane Cook is possibly the worst comedian I have ever witnessed take the stage in my life.
  9. I feel very secluded from when I started 6 years ago. I hardly play at all now except to camp Abbies.
  10. Agreed. I have a meeting starting at 8 tomorrow night and I'd rather not know any details about tomorrow night's episode until I watch it online.
  11. I saw it over the holidays and it was genuinely good. The same people that rave about how The Dark Knight was an epic movie are pissed because it's not in German or that Tom Cruise is in it, yet it's a historically accurate movie and not one about a damn super-hero. I absolutely hate Tom Cruise and he did a good job in this movie. There are enough no-name actors that make this movie spectacular. Get over yourself for once.
  12. Maynard isn't necessarily smart, rather just quite clever and just a plain smart-[wagon]. Just because someone is cryptic and offers ideas alternate to the norm, doesn't make them an intelligent person. I would argue that he is somewhat intelligent and quite informed. He's a great lyricist and very clever.
  13. Just watched: Defiance. Interesting movie and was pretty good overall. I'd recommend it.
  14. I thought the best film of the year was In Bruges, at least from what I saw.
  15. The real date that you should be looking forward to is February 24th.
  16. Just think until you come up with something good. You'll know when that happens. It took me a month to think of Ataraxy for my band name.
  17. Playing on a drum line for 5 years and having your own drum kit and a band practice in your basement = goodbye high frequencies.
  18. Blood Bank [album] by Bon Iver. I was completely captivated within the first 30 seconds of it. That's the sign of a great artist.
  19. Their Live At Pompeii movie/concert is so amazing. I watch it once a week, at least. The live version of "Echoes" is 10x better than the album version because of Nick Mason's drumming. He is totally making it up as he goes along, but it all fits so perfectly.
  20. That's about 5-7 years too young for me. I'll recommend you Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.
  21. Echoes: Live by Pink Floyd. In my opinion, the greatest song they have ever written.
  22. I wouldn't rule it out. When they announced they were going to play Coachella, they all sincerely denied making ANY new music. Then when they decided to add in Rock the Bells and Alpine Valley (of which I saw them at AV), Tom Morello said that they were respecting each others solo endeavors and that recording new music is "a whole different ball of wax." After headlining Big Day Out, Leeds/Reading, and other festivals around the world, they choose "not to comment." The more they have been playing together, the less they say about recording. Having seen Rage twice on their reunion tour during the last year leads me to believe that there might be a chance for new material. When they opened at Alpine Valley with "Testify" and the lights all came up on the 40,000+ screaming, fists in air, Zach looked at the crowd and did something I've never seen before at a live concert: He smiled, something very rare for him to do on stage. And when they ended the show with "Killing In the Name", there was energy that was the equivalent to millions of Rage fans pent up for 8 years there that could not be topped by any live show around these days. Just watch this video and watch up until the last second and you will see why I think that the four members of Rage Against the Machine are on good terms once again and why I believe there's a possibility for a new album.
  23. The Grapes of Wrath or East of Eden by John Steinbeck. Both amazing pieces of literature, the former being my favorite.
  24. I'm already studying to be a teacher and what you've got to realize is that the kids that make fun of subs or teachers have no respect from the rest of the students. If you give students respect and treat them like equals, you'll be treated like that as well. Of course there might always be a John Bender in your class, which you can't really do anything about. The worst sub I ever had back in high school was my Freshman year. He was subbing for our history teacher and tried to convince us that the Holocaust was made up. He even brought in a video for it. Needless to say, he never subbed again at our school.
  25. Speak To Me/Breathe by the great Pink Floyd.
