  1. AI is such a cool topic. I considered buying a textbook about it but honestly don't have the money at the moment, nor the time to learn.
  2. Meh I'd call SQL more of a scripting language if anything but it definitely applies. Done that as well, its interesting but not my thing,
  3. First one is weird but I quite like the second :)
  4. So with the new forum up and running I'm very curious to see what people's language of choice is. I know obviously there is a huge difference in the uses of the languages but what is it that you like to do with your favorite? My personal favorite is Java - we've done so much with it in school I've just been more interested in it than anything else. I do occasionally use php and html/javascript when doing web stuff but I much prefer Java to any other language I've tried.
  5. *Orgasms* lets get this [cabbage] started!
  6. Of course, the whole point of open source is free distribution - modifications should be allowed and encouraged imo. And Das, your brilliance never ceased to amaze me. ;)
  7. 3/3 here. If eggs were used in bread (which they can be) it would taste like quiche. And yes the results worry me, but its really nothing new. Nobody cares about basic practical knowledge anymore.
  8. Joe's correct, i'm uncomfortable with passing [Caution: Executable File]s around from user to user - although i trust people like yguy and dsavi to - i'd rather just make it illegal because i can see that being abused easily. also posting no say leaked source code to half life 2 or something xD. or source code of a program like word, runescape, something with an owner with money who can get pissy. Yeah posting no source code should definitely be on there - thats where legal issues would come into play and we don't want that. Maybe the file upload feature of this forum could be used for passing source files? Obviously it would need to be moderator reviewed...
  9. No stupid threads saying "how duz i program wow game lul" Nah those rules look fine, relaxed rules be better anyway ;) Could always make more as needed.
  10. It gives the impression that some users are superior to others which is simply not true. As darkdude said it plays to favoritism - the mods and admins have no favorites. As well, an offer of a staff position is something that is dealt with privately between the user and the admin team, and not something that needs to be public on the board.
  11. I'd like to table a motion to create the new board and add Laikrob to a special usergroup that doesn't have access. Kidding, yeah tutuorials/basics of programming would be a lot of fun to make and very useful :)
  12. So you know the city, but still not the exact location nor his name >_> Anyone can find out the city and ISP - the isp can get an address from an IP address.
  13. I shall explain. Coders write programs - for example this forum software was written in php, you need a mysql developer to create and maintain the database, an html developer, and a styles developer (CSS and html). I could program a game, I could program anything really(not me personally, I'm not very good) but basically any program you use on the computer has been programmed/coded by somebody. It is possible to write malicious programs, yes. Viruses and hacking tools are made by programmers, but 99% of programming is done for legitimate, useful reasons. I'm sure the admins would enforce strict rules about no writing/discussion of malicious tools/programs. Copyright infringement can only occur if the license for the program doesn't permit redistribution and modification. For example, were I to obtain the code for this bulletin board and post it for everyone to see, then I could be liable because the contract doesn't permit free redistribution. However, our old forum software, for example (PHPBB3) is completely open-source. Open source means that they deliberately make the code available to anyone who wants it, for free - that way you can tinker with it, make any changes you want, optimize it, or whatever. One of the reasons the TIF theme for this board had to be bought rather than created by someone here is because only the admins (or people with direct file transfer access) can see the code and work on it. With the old board, anyone could, so regular users (or at least not admins) could create their own style and the admins just had to implement it here (Example both dsavi and errdoth wrote a style for the old phpbb boards) I hope that answers your questions somewhat, hope I wasn't too confusing.
  14. If there's no board within a month, I'd say its not happening. You could always pm an admin after a while to see if anything's being done.
  15. Sorry if I sound a little... Out spoken, but would it not be possible to set it so that after X number of posts, a person is moved to a new user group? It is possible to do this without making any changes that normal people can see. I've played with a number of forum boards, but not this version, so I can't be 100% this is possible. Even adding a requirement of 100 posts would be very effective to stop most ad bots. Also, when a topic or post is reported, is it made invisible, until staff (Moderator) has cleared it? If not, this would make it much easier to combat such problems. Again though, I'm not sure what your limitations are. If ad bots, or massive spam attacks have been a large problem in the past, then I can see how this is being kept as it is. But if there have not been many recent attacks that were not easily handled, perhaps this limit is a tad much. Sorry if it sounds like I'm trying to tell you how to do our job.... Just trying to be helpful. Ciao Your first point is true - it would be technically possible. As for making topics or post invisible on report - imagine how much that would be abused? As an ex staff member I quickly came to realize how many attacks there really are on this board. The majority are dealt with fairly fast, partly because of the flood control. You wouldn't think it, but taking it down 15 seconds would probably quadruple the amount of work needed to remove spam topics/posts.
  16. Code you write isn't under any license as long as it's yours - there is all sorts of discussion to be had. There wouldn't be a legal issue unless I'd illegally decompiled something and was posting the code there.
  17. I was just about to say "about time, yay!" but then I saw they nerfed the offensive bonuses :(
  18. So I was thinking over the past couple of days about making a subforum for programming and web design discussion. It would probably go as a subforum of T&C. It could discuss programming languages, game programming, animation, web developement and basically anything programming related. Now I realize that an issue that will undoubtedly come up is the lack of topics regarding programming - and I concede that there really haven't been many. I'd like to use the sports & fitness forum as an example however. When the forum was first made, around 5 or 6 topics existed that were found relevant and moved there. Now, a few months later, there are 2-3 pages of threads and it's moderatly active. I think that creating a new forum gives rise to new discussion. As much as there certainly isn't a need now I do know we have many users on these forums who are interested in the various aspects of programming and would be much more inclined to participate were there a forum specifically for it. I can understand if it isn't added, but here's to hoping it works out! Ps. Only other related idea I could find was one 1.5 years ago, specifically for web dev. This one would cover a broader range and hopefully increase activity.
  19. Well I'm sure the only way Jimmyw3000 got crew was by being pulled out of a hat ;) Just kidding I love you Jimmy.
  20. I don't think it was ever not allowed, dunno though. I don't see why we want to encourage people too lazy to do their own homework though.
