I don't think I have the one that came with the laptop, would another windows vista work? Or... I'll try looking for it I guess. As long as it´s the same version of Vista, Home premium, Ultimate, etc... and you still have that laptops product code, usually printed on a label on the bottom of the laptop then it should work.

I was just about to point that out. That build looks good and all, though adding my OS and picking my own case would make it out to over $600 not including shipping. Whilst right now $520 WITH shipping is pushing my budget a lot. As of now I'm really satisfied with the build Spork gave me in terms both of cost and part reliability/power. As for the LG optical drive, i've come to really trust LG products. And if worst comes to worst, it konks out and i have to spend 20 bucks for a new one. The only reason I'm getting one right away is because i need it to install my OS. Bear in mind this is without any combos or any special deals what so ever, it was getting late and I couldn´t be bothered to trawl through Newegg´s site. If you´re going to go with Spork´s build: Try and swap out the 6670 for the 5770, you won´t regret it. Change the HDD for the samsung f3 1Tb.

I was. I still recommend the ASUS drive, though. Also, I didn't really take a look at anyone else's builds until just now. Askthedude's build is great, except I wouldn't get that PSU/RAM bundle. Cooler Master PSUs have a high failure rate, and you don't need 8GB of RAM. Didn´t even realise I´d put in 8Gb of RAM, my bad. :unsure: Stick with 4 unless you´re a heavy photoshopper/VM user. PSU was a tricky choice as I was struggling to stick to budget in my first revisions... With the $100 left over you can easily take out the bundle and get a PSU, RAM and a case. Edit: Swap out the RAM for this. ACDC´s PSU should suit you fine, and that leave a decent amount for a case of your choice. Edit2: Managed a Sandy Bridge build in budget, should be much better than anything that´s not a top end AMD X4 or X6.

My 2 cents: Leaves $100ish for a case as it´s a more personal thing. Also if you´re a student you can get w7 for around $30. CPU is a Phenom II X2, cheaper than the quad cores and can be unlocked to a quad core if you have the right motherboard, like the one I included. More details here and a simple google search will provide more information.

Start over again from scratch, recheck all cables, ram pushed in properly, CPU seated properly, that sort of stuff... It´ll probably be some stupid little thing that you´ve forgotten to do. :) Try removing the GPU and using the onboard graphics and see if the monitor becomes responsive.

Moving away from the roach infestation of the Today thread, I found out I´ve got my place at Uni today. :D

First you want to go into the bios and change your boot order so that your laptop tries to boot from a CD before the hard drive. Then it's just a simple matter of sticking in the CD and restarting. It should boot from the CD and then you just follow the on screen instructions. Remember to do the last step after you finish reinstalling!

The heat sinks on that RAM may obstruct an aftermarket cooler (which I'd recommend if you get the 2500k and overclock it), I'd get something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145260 Like I said before, get the 2500k and if your budget will allow it get a Gigabyte motherboard with OCgenie. 1 touch of a button and it'll OC your CPU to 4.2Ghz.

Why would you protect melee at abby demons? Even in prosslyte a Bunyip is enough to keep you alive.

I'd assume you're running nvidia optimus by default? Which graphics card drivers did you update? Try updating the other one because it may be that optimus isn't detecting RS as a resource hog and is using the intel graphics card instead.

This sometimes happens to me with firefox too. Try killing the process for the download client using the task manager instead of x-ing out of it.

That sounds like a dust buildup. Get a can of compressed air and carefully take of the back casing of your laptop, give it a few squirts of air and fasten it back on. Should help.

I'm running the exact same processor, ram and I think graphics card and I can manage around 20FPS in medium settings so it's pretty safe to say it's your net. No need to upgrade your computer unless you really want to. Another thing to look at is 3G USB modem. I also live in a rural area and if you've got 3G coverage I think it may be better than satellite internet.
