Help needed with quoting when replying in the forums
You forgot the " " around the name. Should be: [quote name="name"]Text[/quote]

Alright.
15-16k an ore + an average of one load per hour = insane F2P cash! :D Yews might not be quite as profitable, but they don't require as much attention or world hopping and are much more predictable.

Pirate Bay founders lose trial
As I see it, the problem isn't that it's impossible to moderate what torrents are uploaded, the problem is that Pirate Bay didn't even try. Also, I don't think it is impossible, although I do concede that it would take a lot of work. All they would have had to do is make it so that each torrent had to be approved before being posted to the site. If they could not prove that a torrent's content was legal for distribution, then it doesn't go up on the site. Simple. It's just not that simple. TPB gets tens of millions of hits daily, and new torrents are created every other second. The amount of staff, processing work, and extra lines of programming required to actually get that moderation system in place would make TPB all but useless to use for generic, fair-use torrenting. And yes, it does go on. There's also the matter of cloaking a torrent to throw off this system, which makes it more of a headache to implement than simply trying to trust the end user. In the end, they're the ones that abused the system. I guess it works both ways, since even though a convention was broken, it isn't like the rule could have been enforced anyway... I merely said it was a simple solution, I never said it was an easy solution. Pirate Bay and other torrent hosts don't even try. The fact that it would be difficult to implement and run does not absolve them of their responsibility. What if the police stopped investigating murders simply because it is expensive, difficult and they're not always successful? If torrent sites screened the torrents that were being uploaded and removed the illegal ones as soon as they realized they had slipped through, then they would have a strong defense of making every reasonable attempt to keep illegal torrents off of their site.

Macro question (no, I am not breaking the rules)
No. Jagex is not scanning everyone's computer looking for macro programs. Even if they were, they could only ban you if you were using it in-game. Don't use it to play RuneScape and you'll be fine.

There is nothing wrong with making torrents available. To use your example, the shopkeeper's shop in and of itself is not illegal so it does not need to be closed (although, in all probability would be), as long as it stopped selling drugs. Personally, I am surprised that the site has been allowed to continue to operate and even more surprised that they have not been forced to remove the torrents of copyrighted material. OT: they would most likely be used as currency by their cell mates.

And chickens run around in circles getting blood everywhere... : As long as Pirate Bay removes the torrents for copyrighted material from thier site, they will have no futher problems like this and be allowed to operate freely.

Uh, yeah they do...? I could make my signature into porn right now and as long as it was small enough it would get through. Granted I'd probably get banned and it would be removed in under 5 minutes... but whatever, the point is I could do it. I think he was talking about tip.it's dynamic signatures; which I think they screen the images for, but I could be wrong. Yes, I was. I've never tried to upload a totally unique signature pic. I simply assumed they were all screened. Search engines do not simply search torrent files, nor do they host those files on their site. Pirate Bay was nothing but a torrent site. You cannot compare an engine that searches the entire web with one that searches it's own database of stored content.

Tip.it doesn't automatically let your uploaded signature pic be posted (your avatar pic does though...weird), it has to be approved first to make sure it's the right size and is not offensive. Why not simply apply that same principal to torrents being uploaded?

Ouch! Scathing criticism there. Highlights how pathetic the human race has become (or always has been, to be honest)... Perhaps it simply highlights what can be done when a government is pressured by a large, multi-national industry backed by billions of dollars. The difference being that you and the other mods here are actually trying to keep that kind of thing off of your site. I didn't say that torrent files were illegal, in fact they are not, but hosting a torrent file that allows others to download copyrighted material is. While they may not have put the torrents on the site, as the proprietors it was their responsibility to make sure that any torrents of copyrighted materials were removed. The library is providing a service, yes. However, you will not find any illegal content in the library. 'Mein Kampf' is not an illegal text (in North America at least, I'm not sure about anywhere else). Of course the librarian cannot be held liable if someone reads a book and is inspired to do something illegal. If I watch 'Natural Born Killers' and it inspires me to go on a killing spree, does that mean Woody Harrelson and Oliver Stone are responsible? Of course not. The difference is that a torrent file exists for a single purpose. The only thing you can do with it is use it to download a file. Ultimately, yes, the end user is responsible for what they do, but Pirate Bay also has a responsibility here, as the service provider hosting the torrent, to make sure that the torrents they provide are for legal materials. It has become far to easy to let people escape their responsibilities, especially with something like this that a lot of people feel does not actually hurt anyone. Does the legal system have better things to spend their energy and money on? Yes. Should the legal system prosecute those they do choose to go after to the full extent of the law? Yes. As Liam Neeson said in 'Batman Begins': "Criminals thrive on society's indulgence."

0.999...=1 and why people believe it is false.
You've made a calculation error here: 10(.99) -.99 does not equal 9(.99) it equals 9.9-.99 You have to multiply before you subtract. Even if you could, it would be 9.11(.99) not 9(.99) You proved that 1=1 not .99=1 If x=2 10x=20 10(2)-1=20-1 20-1=19 not 9(2)=19 If I had calculated it the way you did, I would have proved that 18=19. [/hide] I subtracted x from both sides not 1(well x equaled one but you get the point) x=2 10(2)=20 10(2)-2=20-2 9(2)=18 the reason I change to 9(2) is the same property that gives 5x-2x=3x Okay, I see what you're saying. I missed that you had subtracted x from each side. #-o Can you tell it's been many years since my last Calculus class?

Unfortunately, they made available torrents files which were allowing people to download copyrighted material. In this way, they became acomplices to the illegal downloading. Say you tell me that you want to rob a bank and need someone to open the vault for you. I introduce you to someone who can do that, and together you successfully rob the bank. I am just as guilty as the two people who robbed the bank, as I have aided them in committing a felony even though I did not take part in the actual crime. Pirate Bay could have avoided this by either not allowing torrents to copyrighted material to be uploaded to their site, or by simply removing the ones that were. That being said, the courts have decided to prosecute the Pirate Bay founders as a public example to try and scare people out of illegal downloads. When was the last time, before this of course, that you heard of anyone being arrested for illegal downloading? They know it's still going strong, and they know that they don't have the resourses to police it properly. Maybe this is their new tactic; go after the sites hosting the torrent files so that the downloaders have no way of connecting to each other.

Compfreak is right, it is not equal to 1. The size between them becomes infinitely smaller to a point where it is mathematically insignificant, but it will never become 1. Infinity cannot be used for proper calculations, as it is not an actual number. It can be used for theoretical calculations, but you cannot simply treat it like a regular number.

A look into past updates/Jagex time management.
Jagex has more people in customer relations than every other category combined??? Yikes. I've dealt with major oil companies that don't commit those kinds of staff resources to drilling and refining, let alone customer support. Heck, Imperial Oil's nation-wide POS help desk, that's for retail site technical support, is only open for 12 hours a day in Canada (apparently people on the West coast don't need support after 4pm local time). Given how only 35% of their staff is in development, I think they've done an excellent job of adding new content and updates to the game.

Some 'blogger' parent thinks RS makes kids fat
Eating is only a big part of combat training, and there are a great many other things to do in RuneScape. Combat has only been a small part of my character's development, and a lot of people make pure skiller accounts that have no combat levels at all.

You mined for 6 hours?!? :o Wow. You weren't kidding when you said you no-life'd that night! Still, a big gratz on being so close to your goal. Good luck.

Some 'blogger' parent thinks RS makes kids fat
You know that for sure do you? Are you, in fact, the blogger in question? The problem with blogs like this, or just blogs in general, is that it allows any self-important twit with an internet connection to spout off about what is wrong with the world to everyone and anyone. The reason so many people in this thread feel this person is being serious is that bloggers like this are always being serious. They may put "disclaimers" at the top of the page, but that's so if their "well-reasoned" arguments are met with anger and, frankly, reality by the readers, they can simply say it was meant as a joke. -.- Ha ha ha... Last time I checked, jokes were supposed to be funny. This ignorant tirade on RuneScape doesn't even come close to sarcasm, let alone humor.

Somalia pirate situation
And yet, you felt that my comparison of pirate attacks to street crime was "ignorant"? :-s Yes, I was aware of how violence has torn apart the streets of Ireland. Next time I will place [sarcasm][/sarcasm] around such remarks so you don't get confused.

Somalia pirate situation
Apparently you, fortunately, live in an area that does not have street gangs. If they're not going into a war zone, then why arm them? Also, if they're given SMGs, it will become a war zone. It's called escalation. You can't simply assume that just because a person is trained with a weapon that they're actually capable of killing someone. I don't know if I could do it, could you?

Kaida23's Adventures of a Big Damn (F2P) Hero!
Thanks for the support everyone! You guys rock. I'm over half-way to level 88 now, only 200k Xp to go! I'm hoping to get it by Thursday or Friday. I've had quite a bit of success in finding free spots on full worlds the past couple of days. Here's hoping I can keep it up. I don't consider myself a "pure" skiller, my combat level is 63. But I've definitely put more effort into my non-combat skills, especially Mining and Smithing. They were the very first skills I started working on. Heck, the only reason I started raising my attack level was so that I could wield higher level picks. In the end I raised my other combat skills so I could complete the Dragon Slayer quest, and my Ranged so I could wear green dragonhide. The only reason I raised my Prayer was in an unsuccessful attempt to get the Gravedigger random and get the last couple of random rewards I needed, both of which I've gotten since I started this blog (I don't even want to think about how much I spent on bones or how much time I wasted burying them... :? ). I used the profits from Mining and Smithing to fund Magic until level 43 so I could cast superheat ore...and do yet more mining. :D (superheating is very efficient btw) To be honest, I did nothing but Mining/Smithing for so long I actually thought that all the harvesting skills were gain-a-single-item-then-wait-for-respawn. Then I gained 70 Woodcutting levels in two weeks...while cross-training Firemaking...and making a fair bit of profit in the process. Then I started raising Fishing/Cooking/Crafting/Runecrafting to finish the Lumbridge/Draynor achievement diary, and enjoyed Fishing/Cooking so I got them up to 60/61. I raised my Crafting to 43 so when I started mining again (yes, it always comes back to that) I could cut any gems that I found. I don't know about people giving girls more stuff though, I've never had to ask anyone for anything. The Mining/Smithing paid for everything in the beginning and I've since found several other ways to get cash, although they're not quite as profitable. Heck, nothing I've found in F2P is as profitable as mining Runite. : Whew! I think that's enough history for one day. See you all next time.

Why female players are underepresented in RuneScape?
Given the responses to this thread, perhaps a better question would be: Are female players underrepresented in Runescape? The "why" seems to indicate that it is taken as fact and we then are tasked with finding a reason for it. By the way, I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one bothered by poor grammar. However, you do have to take into account the fact that a lot of people on this forum are either still learning the language or come from countries where English is not mother tongue. I don't think a little bit of grammar flexibility is out of the question.
