  1. I would argue that the reason you want a family is because of societal expectations too. Most of the studies done on parenthood and happiness show that having children damages marriages and happiness... At least until the kids have moved out :P
  2. Sorta-- especially since in EoC you can see the other person's active "buffs" too (right? I dont play anymore lol) But even though you know what their equipment is, you cant calculate specifically what their potential is compared to yours. It's like removing combat levels altogether but keeping the high scores and having to estimate their potential based on their stats, compared to yours. Easier to just have a number generated for you so you dont have to guess and do the mental math To the second part of your post, I agree. And with that being said, it sort of makes the accuracy of the combat formula much less important.
  3. Is this really true? I don't think so. Everybody keeps repeating how the old/138 formula allowed people to hide how powerful they were, and how the new/200 formula regularly overestimates people's power. People also see that Graardor was level 624 - four and a half times higher than a maxed player, despite being soloable many times per trip - under the old system and is now level 210 - despite being classified as tier 75 - under the new formula. Hard mode Graardor? He's also 210 combat. Nex? Used to be 1001, is now 220. So is Nex 5% stronger than Graardor, or is Nex one and a half times stronger? So, what formula gives you a decent indication of power? I think combat level has never been accurate enough that you can say it's been about combat strength - that's just a myth perpetuated by Jagex, because that's what they designed it for. That said, the old formula would give you a minimum combat strength: at 115 combat, it's at least all 80s, at best a turmoil zerker. The current formula? That does the same: 200 combat is at least 99 Strength and Defence, but it might well be completely maxed, and it doesn't reflect equipment at all - equipment has only gotten more important with EoC, so that's a bigger drawback. There's no more budget/low-level decent armour like the old rune. For the old graardor example, youre using equipment and stat boosts and food to fight him. If you fought a lvl 138 monster without equipment, food, or protection prayers, it was a lot more even. if combat level is to be truly accurate, it must constantly change depending on your equipment and inventory and active familiars/prayers.
  4. If your only goal in life is to make it to your grave as safely as possible, you will probably succumb to the same fate as all the other people out there who chose to live a life of mediocrity: http://www.collective-evolution.com/2013/04/27/the-top-5-regrets-of-the-dying/ You are correct about happiness/success being measured by the things you do though
  5. Wouldn't 138 be even more misleading than 200 if all three styles are supposed to be "equal" now? The old combat triangle was heavily skewed towards melee
  6. Yeah I quit playing after EoC lol

I mean hey, maybe your dad's kinda kinky
  8. Yes context matters. In this case, the context is of someone who has a proven track record of wimping out, whining about everything, and refusing to make changes to his life; even when the opportunities are handed to him on a silver platter. So I think it's safe to say that he was making his decision based on his emotions, rather than his rationality, as always.
  9. Because his choice was based on fear, not rationality.
  10. Minus the NMZ, of course :P But in all fairness, nobody knew that NMZ would basically become the next Pest Control
  11. I get the feeling that we're never gonna know if his math is right or wrong, since the people who claim it's wrong refuse to demonstrate why >_>
  12. Still mildly amused by the fact that people never seem to realize that "devaluation" of achievements is inevitable in RS. Yet they still choose to pursue those achievements, and then whine about it anyway. I guess they're still clinging to the hope that they can have their cake and eat it too someday. >_>
  13. It's long, but awesome. The kind of thing that deeply resonates with my life purpose :) Never paid attention to Tony Robbins' stuff before because quite frankly he triggers my bullshit-detector. :P Some of the stuff in the video is kind of unnecessary I think, but the overall core of it is amazing.
  14. Yeah I went ahead and used mystic and it worked fine. Used mitre instead of my farseer though just because the massive prayer boost justifies the small loss in mage attack IMO.
  15. What gear would you recommend for someone with 45 defense? Mystic?
  16. Having friends quit or get banned was always the emotional equivalent of them dying to me since chances were, I'd never get to speak with them ever again.
  17. OoT is tied with Final Fantasy X for favorite game of all time. I replayed Majora's Mask a couple of years ago and liked it more than when I was a kid, but I still don't quite see the appeal that it has over OoT
  18. You're probably just dehydrated or out of shape or something. The only time I've vomited from working out was when I was pushing myself beyond my limits. Usually from running faster/longer than I'm used to. I don't think I've ever felt nauseous from lifting. Though I did get a bloody nose from benching too much once :D Edit: Actually in hindsight, I remember the first few times I'd do back workouts I got nauseous since they're such a major muscle group and I wasn't used to the exercises.
  19. "you remind me of my pinky toe. you're small, cute, and I'm probably going to bang you on my coffee table later tonight..."
  20. I'd like to imagine that if every person just quit worrying about what's best for society, and instead focused on what's best for themselves, a lot of the "issues" society has today would begin to disappear pretty quickly. But yeah people hate responsibility. It's easier to sit on your ass and blame the world for all of your problems than it is to figure out how to solve your problems by yourself. No wonder my country has so many overweight, bored, hyper-sensitive people looking to be offended at all times. :P
  21. Dammit had a mildly-lengthy post written out for Ginger but I accidentally hit the "back" button and lost it. In a nutshell... Yes, society encourages women to be "strong" and "independent" now. At the same time, society still sees women the same way it sees children-- without accountability or responsibility. There's a lot of women out there who will feel victimized if her relationship sucks, and blame all of the problems on the man. There's a lot of men out there who will feel victimized if his relationship sucks, and blame all of the problems on the woman. Instead of pissing yourself off and trying to change the world to how things "should" be, it's a lot easier to just examine how things actually are and structure your life such that you're still happy regardless of the world's unfairness. In other words... -expect women to behave the way their biology tells them to behave, not how society tells them to behave -structure your life such that you maximize all the good parts of your biology (e.g. sex), and minimize the bad parts (e.g. jealousy) -accept responsibility for everything that happens to you-- both good and bad; never consider yourself a victim -don't spend time with people who think they're victims -focus your attention on things that make you happy, that you have control over -don't focus your attention on things that make you unhappy and that you have no control over Simple stuff. "Gender issues" and femininity/masculinity become pretty much irrelevant.
  22. I didn't really read it from an equality perspective. I just read it as more of a "I'm a White Knight beta male and here's my advice on how to get your girlfriend to cheat on you" perspective. But then again, I don't really believe in equality and I think people who whine about inequality are insane. But that's another issue. :P I like how he says, "A hopeless romantic is focused on your pleasures, desires and needs because you have the potential to become the center of his universe." Then his very next sentence is, "We are hardworking and have plans, ambitions and goals that require long work hours. For us, there is no time available for playing games or for pretending to be somebody else." I agree with the second sentence wholeheartedly. The problem is, the second sentence completely contradicts the first one. :P I imagine he himself doesn't actually follow through with what he claims to advise if he's truly a "hopeless romantic." Meaning, he's the guy that women consider to be "perfect" until the honeymoon period wears off. At which point he's just another boring needy guy who has no meaningful ambitions outside of her. If you want a girl to get bored and consider cheating on you, make her the center of your universe and prioritize her over your life's ambitions and goals. If you want her to remain interested, then you have to have bigger fish to fry than her, regardless of how amazing she is. Anyways, I wouldn't take anything in that article too seriously. As always, those kinds of articles are loaded with Disney airy-fairy bullshit that sounds great on paper, but quickly falls apart when you ask yourself, "does it work? and does it work forever?" Edit: read the first comment at the bottom of the article. +1 faith in humanity. Edit2: read the first response to the first comment at the bottom of the article. -1 faith in humanity.
