  1. "Is it really killing?" I consider abortion 'Letting the thing die', not 'Killing it'. Depends on the method, ofcourse. Would you call miscarriages murder? I don't see anything wrong with killing non sentient organisms. Wait - I think I misinterpreted what you were trying to say. Nevermind. But - How can you be sure something isn't sentient? Run tests on it in a lab? Apparently, even plants can be sentient. http://www.environmentalgraffiti.com/plants/news-feeling-plants-how-sensitive-flora Plants react with no thought process which constitutes they are (by most standards) not sentient. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sentient And what "standards" are you referring to? I think those plants fit the sentient definition rather well. Plants are not "aware" of their environment. They do react to stimuli but the reaction is impulsive, not conscious.
  2. Let them immigrate freely. Harshly punish those that cause problems. All will be well.

  5. What makes killing something that isn't sentient wrong?
  6. Music and other media give us context, share ideas, effectively give us and a deeper understanding of the world and of each other. That should not be limited.
  7. Good thing music is a product, not information. Limewire didn't just facilitate the transfer of music.
  8. Information should never be restricted.

    Today...

Accutane got recalled in the United States. it's illegal here now XD [works like a charm on acne though...but have fun never having kids ;) ] Apparently it can lead to bowel problems.
  10. The Chocolate War Gattaca The Matrix Helvetica The Stranger
  11. You are in fact correct; to be competitive for UChicago you would need to increase your class rank somewhat. His class rank (top 10%) is for the most part fine. What he needs to increase is his unweighted GPA to around 3.7 to make UChicago and Rice matches. I would disagree there - while I am unaware of other schools, I know Harvard looks almost exclusively at class rank rather then overall GPA, since relative grading difficulty varies so much between schools. I assume Chicago is similar. Ivy leagues tend to be holistic in determining which students to accept. While Harvard is selective enough to pick out quite a few valedictorians, it isn't always the case. A student's GPA tends to be the first hurdle in the application process for determining whether a student is "good enough." Hate to break it but 3.6 is fairly unlikely for UChicago or Rice regardless of class rank. __ @OP: if you are considering studying in the North West, you could apply to University of Washington.

  13. Your scores and extracurricular activities are a little too low for ivy contention, but you are a shoe-in for all of the schools you posted, with the possible exception of Rice (where you still have a chance). For schools with a more academic orientation; the University of Chicago is a good place to look. A 201 PSAT is not terribly high; to have any significant benefit from the score you must be a national merit scholar. Similarly for SAT scores to be a significant help your score must be 2360+; the 75th percentile for most such schools falls in the 2350 range or so such that without a perfect score it does not help you much. I'm confused to why you suggested UChicago being that GPA-wise it's a reach at best.
  14. Just a funny idea I had for a topic. What are you carrying on you? I'll start: 3 Cepacol Lozenges (Sore throat pain) Wallet with my license, $20 in small bills, Starbucks card Cell Phone iPod
  15. High Rollers was pretty horrible at best.
  16. zinger? I hate this train of thought. That is, the idea that everyone but you and a close few are stupid and worthless. I grew up in rural Russia and lived like that because quite frankly, it was true.
  17. Become a gangbanger. It's just like being a cop minus the paperwork and low pay.
  18. Estimated percent chance of acceptance: Low Safety: 95-100 Safety: 80-95 High Safety: 75-80 Low Match: 65-75 Match: 45-65 High Match: 35-45 Low Reach: 20-35 Reach: 5-20 High Reach: <5

    Today...

Sadly, I was sick today. Woke up, played Fifa for a couple of hours, then went back to bed and slept until the afternoon. Currently working on schoolwork (expecting to finish around 11pm)
  20. You demonstrate a dead-on understanding of college applications/chances.
  21. Realistically speaking, unless you seriously work on your UW GPA, Rice is like a reach at best and Reed is about a high match / match. Baylor, on the other hand is probably a low match for you. Good luck!
