There's a surprising amount of prejudice in this discussion against anyone who voices any opinion other than "Hitler was evil, end of story". Apart from the fact that you're trying to suppress freedom of speech, it's never as simple as that, there have been evil and tyrannical dictators or totalitarian leaders down the centuries many of whom have their names revered nowadays. Hitler is so hated because he still burns fresh in the memories of many people still alive. The propoganda campaigns against him in other countries were incredible, necessary during the war, but now that the war is over the victor countries still have this image of Hitler = evil burning in their minds. Yes, Hitler was a genocidal lunatic, but was he acting in this way to be evil, or did he genuinely believe that he was doing what was best for his country? I believe the latter, yes he was power crazed, but he wasn't doing it for purely self motivated interests because of a personal grudge (although he did have one). He employed a form of social darwinism which was founded on the naive belief that the Aryan race was superior, this wasn't total lunacy, it was just his belief went against nearly all modern ethics. You've got to remember that people voted Hitler into power. After the depression many people who were used to the Kaiser during WWI wanted another strong leader like Hitler. He was genuinely loved by many Germans at the time, they didn't mind losing some of their liberties as long as they had jobs, and they weren't aware of the concentration camps. At the time it was felt he was a genuinely good leader. The fact that so many German soldiers fought and died for him is testimony to this. It's only when the dust settled and the advancing allied troops uncovered the horrors of the concentration camps did they find out to what extent he had carried out his racial policies. Before the war many people thought he was what Germany needed, many British people were sympathetic to his foreign policy of reversing the unjust terms of the Treaty of Versailles. I think it was in 1939 (before th war) that time voted Hitler 'Man of the Year'. The Vatican praised Hitler, sending him birthday greetings and praising his 'strength and honour'. His mistake was to take Germany into a war on more fronts than he could handle, no one tries to handle the USSR and the west at the same time, particularly when Hitler and Stalin had signed a non-aggression pact. Yes, Hitler's ethics and morals were questionable to say the least (okay, disgusting), but that doesn't mean we should suddenly try and end the debate as to his leadership.

Yeah, it was the bias in the media that got me going at first, the MySpace campaign where preppy young teenagers could act sympathetic over a situation which they had no real empathy for, and the fact that other equally important news stories were being marginalised everyday for the sake of keeping a girl's image in the media. You're right, as a parent I wouldn't have left my child like that, at the least I would have locked the door, but then I wouldn't demand the permanent attention of the media like the McCann parents have been doing.

After all, the thread is for you to give an opinion on sex changes. You've implied several times that you'd prefer that homosexuality and sex change operations be illegal. Of course you're entitled to an opinion, but when you suddenly try and turn that opinion into a law it becomes more serious.

I can honestly say if I had a daughter who went missing, the first thing I would do is release photographs so people know who to look for, but they're really taking the piss with all of the media statements, interviews, meeting the pope etc. Exploiting your daughter like that is actually morally disgusting :/ Oh god yeah, I mean a week or two of publicity and appeals is to be expected but after that it becomes less and less about Madeline and more and more about the parents. You're right actually, they're now exploiting the memory of an innocent child in order to promote their own image, with her's dwindling as time goes on. Sickening really.

Some of my favourite holiday memories are going to Cornwall, we go to the same spot twice a year every year. Tiny little village opposite Falmouth. Loads of sailing, relaxing, messing about on the water generally, good food and good company as well as really stunning scenery. Perfect. Apart from that, New York and doing the West Coast of America was awesome. I've had lots of great holidays in France and Majorca, and the South of France is just gorgeous. Eygpt was pretty cool as well, but I wouldn't rush back, it was just a beach holiday really.

To be honest, i'm not exactly sure how bad the parenting was. I mean, the chances of a child being abducted in an open hotel room is still 60 million to 1 (naturally the chances of something else going wrong is far higher). I don't think we should be too quick to blame the parents, new parents are paranoid enough as it is at the moment. Instead, I blame the media for generating a bandwagon over a story that they know will sell over and over, and I do blame the parents for demanding and expecting the attention they're getting.

It depends how you define it. If you value employment and national strength over personal liberty then yes he was a good dictator. If you were white, blond and blue eyed then yes he was a good dictator for you. But of course, the horrific negatives, the racism, the fascism, the loss of nearly any liberty and freedom far outweigh the positives in my opinion. Other European political parties managed to come out the depression without resorting to extremist parties, Germany's democracy was still too vulnerable and untrusted. Hitler as a man was possibly one of the most powerful public speakers in history, but the Nazi party was shambolically run, Hitler was an opportunist he grabbed power where he could and his long term plans were too idealistic. And he also brought Germany straight back into economic trouble when he took on more countries than he could handle in WWII.

So Striker, adam and all the others who seem to think they have a god-given right to decide what's right and wrong, let me ask you this: You're saying that people who want a sex change aren't allowed to decide what they can and what they can't do with their own bodies when it's not hurting anybody else, but you can decide for them, you can decide what's right and wrong for them? Think about it, what gives you the right but not them?

In my eyes she's overhyped. Every day young children in poorer countries get abused, kidnapped, tortured and so on, but we close our eyes until one of "us" gets kidnapped. Probably everyone in Europe has seen her pics and heard the name, but when did you last time hear of that poor black kid smuggled from Africa or of the 120cm tall asian child? Anyways in my eyes pedos are the lowest cast of all. This was a good start, but not enough yet. She is overhyped. Immensley. The whole nation coming together to start a charity just because one girl went missing when there's so much more suffering out there is outrageous. Donations of ÃÆââ¬Å¡Ãâã721,748.84 have been received to the fund to date. ÃÆââ¬Å¡Ãâã721k because someone went missing. Where's that money going to go? Who knows - but it'd certainly do a better job going somewhere more worthy like cancer research, oxfam, etc. So many people go missing a day, why is this any different? I can see why the parents are upset but y'know... I completely agree, but as soon as I even just suggested that thought to my parents they immediately dismissed me as being insensitive and uncaring. It's not that, it's just a complete media bandwagon and if you don't jump on it then you 'don't care'. Her parents are becoming like celebrities now, visiting the Pope, travelling here, travelling there. I can't help wonder whether or not her face would have been plastered over the papers as much if she wasn't white and blond.

In all honesty, the thought of losing someone I love terrifies me more than anything. I suppose i'm too young to have had to overcome that fear. There are also different ways of losing a loved one. Death is the most obvious, but the moment when I was most terrified was somewhat different. I suppose ultimately it's the unknown of what it's like to live without someone you care about that scares me.
