  1. Even with generic needs, you will be overpaying if you're taking a prebuilt. Depends on how much you consider your time worth. For a cheap computer (<$400) you will only save a little buying the parts yourself. Take into account the time to build it and install the OS and it just isn't worth it. When a family member tells me to buy them a new computer I always buy a prebuilt. Most people just don't need much else than that cheap computer. For myself I would never, ever buy a cheap computer, but that's because by the time I want to upgrade my current computer is still better than the cheap ones.
  2. Those two pictures are about two different situations. The first picture is about metered internet usage. The second one is about net neutrality. Metered internet usage sucks, but there isn't anything specifically wrong with it, people who use more will have to pay more, like most every other service. However the second picture is about net neutrality which is specifically about completely denying certain parts of the internet, generally based on protocols (ie shutting down the bittorrent protocol). Accessing certain websites only available at a premium is also possible without net neutrality (like in the picture). Net neutrality is specifically about equal opportunity for all internet businesses.
  3. Al Jazeera's pretty awesome. One of the few places you'll get REAL world news. Yeah it is a pretty good news organization. I've always assumed Al Jazeera English was just translated from Al Jazeera but apparently it is a different station, and there are pretty different views from them both. I watched the live feed for a few hours this morning, it is pretty cool to get info as it is happening.
  4. I'll admit, the main reason I don't want to see these happen is because I already have the 10DVD Ultimate Matrix Collectors Set or whatever it was called, and I hate having a set of series then one or two random other dvds that go with it. Other than that the story is pretty much finished, it had an end.
  5. This is what first came to mind to me when I read the opening post.
  6. On one drive? I have around 4tb, but it's spread out over a few hard drives. I'd like to get a RAID setup (in a NAS preferably) so that I can store videos all on one logical drive. But to OP, no that is not that much at all. Also data like that doesn't really affect computer speed at all unless, like Sy mentioned above, the drive is fragmented or you don't have much space left.
  7. Not sure if it is still like this or not but all HDDs used to score at most a 5.9, even higher RPM drives.
  8. Just finished Uncharted 2 which I borrowed from my cousin. It is pretty freaking sweet.
  9. Heh, I just spent half an hour watching those videos.
  10. I remember being a little disappointed with parts of the Oblivion "dynamic" world, such as leaving a weapon in the street thing listed above, stuff like that was supposed to be in Oblivion. If it actually gets done in this one that would be sweet. I don't see a Betheseda game ever getting the third person view right, but I don't really care about that because I play in fp view. Not being able to move backwards as fast as forwards will completely change the way you have to fight in the games, so that will be awesome. They fix the faces while talking and I will be happy. Pretty excited.
  11. I've just decided I am going to buy basically a whole new computer just for this game (like I did with Oblivion). $1000 late next year should buy a pretty kick ass computer.
  12. As far as I know he was bisexual, not completely gay.
  13. First of all wired is always better than wireless, the newest wireless technology is pretty great compared to older but still doesn't quite have the reliability a wire does. What kind of modem do you have? We occasionally get calls in from gamers who are having connectivity problems only with gaming, and internet service works fine. This has always been because they were "double NAT'd", or behind two NATs. Most ISPs give you a modem/router which has a NAT on it, and then if you plug a wireless router into it then it also has a NAT. If both your modem and router have four ethernet ports (router will have one more off to the side or different colour and be called Internet or WAN or the like) then this is most likely the case. There are multiple ways to fix the problem, basically we offer to bridge a port on the modem for them (gets rid of routing functions) but if they need the other ports then we tell them they have to turn off routing functions on their router. There also exists modem/routers that have wireless capabilities. Someone mentioned some prices before, not sure what kind of dollars they were talking about but you can get a combo unit for about $70, assuming your modem is still fine then you also have the option of just buying a new wireless router which you don't really need to spend more than $40-50 on. I handle a few thousand customers and generally I have seen that linksys seems to be about the most trustworthy brand, but I don't exactly get a random sampling to make an actual statement they are the best.
  14. I've never used compatibility mode before, and have installed some older programs...
  15. Got a new job in 2010, more hours, more responsibility, but also more money. Stress has kind of made this year crappy. Hoping next year is better.
  16. So how exactly is your network setup? Also what model numbers are the switch and router? If it is a switch and a router that makes things very easy, the router will handle all the addressing so everything will be in the same subne. The way that you are going to want this to go is: ethernet cable from internet connection (cable modem/dsl modem/fiber nid ect...) goes into the WAN/Internet port of router (there are generally five ethernet ports on back of router, a group of 4 and one by itself, the WAN/Internet is the one by itself) - then an ethernet cable from any one of the other four ports in back of router to the uplink port of switch (some switches don't have a dedicated uplink port, if it doesn't then any port will work). All devices can be plugged into any of the left over ports on switch or last three ports on router. You don't need any sort of virtual private network set up because you already have a private network setup. Now if it isn't set up like that then switching it to that should fix any problems you are having. From the way you describe it, it almost sounds like you have the internet going to the switch, which then goes to the router. In that scenario you don't have all devices on the same local network. All devices plugged into the router will be on the same network, but anything plugged into the switch will be pulling public IP addresses from your ISP. You will still be able to remote from the computers on the router to the computers on the switch with an IP address no problem (or set up a VPN and you can use a name). If you try and remote to a computer on the router from one on the switch you would have to have port forwarding set up but it will work with an ip address+port, or have a VPN set up. Just easier to put them on the same logical and physical local network by setting up like stated above.
  17. Huh? So do you have a router and a switch or two routers? Because those are entirely different scenarios. Also what are you trying to do with them?
  18. Latest gen iPod Classic 160gb. Never had an mp3 player before, so this was my first one. Pretty happy with it so far. I haven't used it with headphones yet or watched any videos on it, the only thing I have done with it is plug it into the aux port in my car. Gets the job done. Just wish they had a bigger one, or that the 500gb Archos was cheaper...
  19. Is it me or do all liberals hate America? I absolutely love America, but I love it enough to know it's faults. One of which is that it messes around in other people's business way too often.
  20. How far into it are you? I just watched it originally because of the creators, and even though it sucked I stuck with it. There were a few ok parts of the first season, but overall it was more or less boring. I just kept with it out of a sense of obligation. Now it is easily the best show currently on TV. I have never seen a show turn around like that before, and it was pretty sudden in season 2 it just got great. I'm not that far in yet. Season 1 episode 5 right now. I'm enjoying it but it's kind of frustrating how slow it is for everything to connect together. Ahh I see, at that point you could still be in the "hopeful" phase where you know it could be good, but it is just way too episodic and not serialized. The problem is that frustration will last through the entire first season and just keep getting worse, until you are just bored with it. But I swear it does get good later  . I watched The Slammin' Salmon, then realize I hadn't watched Super Troopers in a while so I followed it with that, and then since I watched those two I figured I might as well watch Beerfest as well. So I had a good Broken Lizard night  . They are all "stupid" comedies and I enjoy the hell out of them, though I can't blame anyone for not seeing the humour and just seeing the stupid.
  21. Is it DSL? I work at an ISP as an Internet Technician, and we just did an audit of the DSL customers we have that have a different billing speed than listed in the info database, whether it be higher or lower, as well as people on speed packages we don't offer anymore. There were at least 50 on a 1m/256k profile that have never called in to complain about slow speeds, even though they were paying for 3m/768k. There were even two people that were getting 256k/128k that never called in to complain... If you've been a customer for that long it is fairly likely you are being billed and getting a speed package that doesn't exist anymore. I'm currently getting 3m/768k from another provider here and that package doesn't exist on their site anymore, lowest is 5m/1m. I haven't gotten around to changing it yet because it would change my bill, and while I would end up with the same cost for internet ($45/month, $40 for 3/768 + $5 for static IP or $35 for 5/1 + $10 for static IP), I don't know what kind of phone bill I would end up with (just need to call CS and figure it out when I get a chance). So yeah, call your provider, there is a chance they could do something for you.
  22. How far into it are you? I just watched it originally because of the creators, and even though it sucked I stuck with it. 23. Hopefully someday everyone will realize everyone is different and there is nothing wrong with that, this is a good step forward toward that.
