  1. Yes, in fact that's how my mob trap works but on a much larger scale. Though you need a lava or drowning trap at the bottom to kill off the ones who survive. Also you need to have water flow(s) to the edge of the hole (8 blocks long so it dosen't spill over the edge) as mobs will not walk down anything more than 2 blocks deep without being coaxed with water flows.
  2. It will be frustrating for a while, and then fun, and then it will get boring. I almost never die anymore. Just a few general tips: mine down to bedrock level, then count up about 11-15 block up. Then mine there. Dig out a long 2x1 shaft, then make 2x1 shafts branching off from it spaced 2-3 blocks from each other. At that depth, there should be less lava. Less diamonds, but trust me there's way too much lava down near bedrock. Also it pays to explore caves slowly and meticulously e.g blocking off dead end paths at the junctions. You're much more likely to die if you wander aimlessly in caves.
  3. Yeah... *wipes tear out of eye from laughing* But to tell you the truth I was actually really excited 'cause I wanted to see some good old fashioned chaos in the rares market. Nothing makes me happier than seeing rich folk panic. But that snarkly line from Jagex just tickled me to death. :-D
  4. LOL "This item isn't tradable. Please send a bug report to Jagex telling them how you got that hat." Bet they were like FFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU- Nice one Jagex actually having a little foresight
  5. Another example of emergent gameplay: Two people follow each other to engage in "dancing". So it dosen't necessarily need to give you an advantage in the world of skilling, moneymaking, or pvp. But notice how it's still exploiting a feature to do something it was obviously not designed to do. It was designed so that one player could follow another, not to "dance". However playing an entire ballgame with a gnomeball is not emergent. The ball was designed to be thrown. Ballgames involve throwing balls. So a ballgame is just a more complex version of the more common 2 person interaction.
  6. Emergent gameplay to me is when a dev leaves a glitch or unintended feature in the game because there is no official alternative to it yet. Like in Minecraft, where people abuse a glitch in the physics of minecarts to create booster tracks (which have been used in extraordinarily complex creations like minecart stations) to accelerate minecarts to max speed. The developer has officially stated that he won't be fixing this bug until he can provide an official alternative. He says he finds it a bit silly, but if the players like it he won't remove it until he can replace it. I'm pretty sure if it were Jagex they'd remove it immediately, possibly ban some for bug abuse, and then a year later provide some crappy, impractical alternative if they even thought to do that at all.
  7. Awesome. Notch better release desert on the 31st though. I'm running out of beaches to raid for TNT. A couple of monstrous dunes down and I should be set for life.
  8. Well it's java based, so as long as you have java you should be able to run it. You can even run it in your browser on the website, or download the executable jar file from the download page (under linux/other).
  9. Here's that link to the mod thread where elemental arrows were: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=47148 He's updated it with a sign tags mod, which allows you to enter [x] [y] and [z] into signs to see the world position of the sign. Should help you find the 0 chunk. FYI: the x and z coords correspond to horizontal location for... some reason. Y corresponds to vertical position. To find the 0 chunk you're looking for coord 0,0 to 15,15 (x,z). Also that mod has a [time] tag, which will turn the sign into a running clock showing you the current game time.
  10. The lava actually kills spiders fine. But I noticed mobs would occasionally glitch into the corners of the glass somehow... once a creeper did that, and I tried to clear him out manually and... it did not end well  The cacti seem to have stopped that problem, though I still can't figure out why I'll occasionally find spiders in the center. They're prone to glitching, I think.
  11. Phew, I finally finished expanding my mob trap. Good god that took a long time. Not as long as it could have though since I used TNT for much of the excavation. Anyway, it now has 26 floors and extends all the way down to the bottom of the world. Pics: [hide] The underbelly. Lots of drops. Drops flow into this point. It's important to make the drops flow at least 24 blocks away from the spawning floors, as nothing will spawn in a 24 block radius of you. The lava shown is so that you can make stacks of 1 of items you want, so you'll pick those up and the rest will slide past you into the lava (provided you remove the block). That's pretty much what I do for all of the drops besides gunpowder now. String is useless, same for feathers, already have a large chest stuffed with arrows, etc. Sacrificed one floor for the cool catwalk. I was going for a factory look. Behind that window in the background. It's connected to a small tower which visits all the floors along the way. One of the floor enterances. Half blocks to prevent mobs from spawning there. They also won't spawn on glass, but didn't want to use that. And finally a shot of the outside. I know, it looks ugly. IDK maybe I'll eventually figure something out to look pretty. [/hide] Phew. I really need to figure out youtube. Kind of hard to show something in pictures sometimes...
  12. TNT randomly destroys or dislodges the blocks around it. Basically how TNT works is that if contained, it will destroy a 3x3x3 of stone around itself. Sometimes you'll get most of the stone, sometimes not so much. So I mine two out on the center, place the tnt, light it, plug the hole, stand back and it will blow a 3x3x3 tunnel in front of me. Usually if there is much valuable ore to be found in that 3x3x3 block, It will more than likely be exposed by the hole I dig for the TNT. If not, not much of the ore will be lost anyway, if it is even destroyed. Though TNT is slightly more powerful for dirt, and even moreso for gravel. So your tunnel won't be perfect no matter what, because there is lots of dirt and gravel scattered beneath the surface. Honestly I've only hurt diamond with TNT once, and then I still got the diamond anyway. :-P Seriously since I started mining with TNT, now I have an entire stack of diamonds and then some. Though because of my insatiable hunger for TNT, a small island near my base no longer has a beach
  13. Maybe I just got lucky, but this is how much stuff I got from mining with one 64 stack of TNT at adminium level. ...I have two more stacks. And a large chest completely full of gunpowder, needing only me to go out and harvest the sand. I love my mob tower <3:
  14. Speaking of skeletons, funny story about that mob trap I built. Those glass chutes? They weren't there before. And guess what. The skeletons would shoot at me WHILE THEY WERE FALLING. They fall really fast. Like a split second before they appear and hit the ground. And yet they still sniped me in mid flight. Then a creeper somehow escaped, a hole was made in the wall and... peaceful mode. -.- FFS, godamned skeletons with their 0.00001th second reaction time and perfect aim.
  15. Finished my mob trap, based on a design I found on the forums. It involves building around the 0,0 chunk which apparently some some people have found is special with regards to the spawning algorithm in that it it is always checked first in any given iteration and goes randomly from there to ~20 other chunks. The OP's version gets something about 11,000 drops per hour. That's extending from the sky limit all the way down to the adminium with about 28 spawning floors. Mine only goes down 30 below sea level, and as you can see isn't finished (only about 18 floors ATM). Though honestly I'm not sure I even want to add the remaining floors. It's awesome watching the mobs plummet to their deaths. And I already have more gunpowder than I know what to do with. Done by hand btw. Worth noting that the guy's 11,000 version was made in MCEdit. :-P Pic of item flow canal:
  16. The new spell and sling should be useful for low levels, though personally I think that they should have rushes for all 4 elements, all at level 1 and all giving the same exp and damage. Just so, y'know, newbs can utilize all of their elemental runes to raise their level, at least before they get a staff.
  17. I do agree that there should be consequences for one's actions... but only if the consequences are in balance with the offense. Yes sometimes consequences will inevitably be harsh. Like ending up dead for doing something stupid. THAT is the risk you take; that no one will be around to help or that it isn't reasonable for them to do so. But if it can be helped, I would make sure justice is done. Every time. Yes I would have levied a hefty fine on them for not paying, but I would not have just watched their home burn to the ground.
  18. Your morals, it's perfectly acceptable by my standards. Everyone takes risks, I encourage everyone to take more, but beware, there are consequences. And what, may I ask, is the logic behind enforcing such consequences to the point where one is completely devoid of compassion? There must be some reason behind your belief that has the interests of humanity as a whole in mind, right?
  19. Weather they deserved it or not is not the issue... it is disgusting from a moral standpoint to stand there and watch someone's house burn to the ground while it is in your power to save it. Doesn't even matter if they did something stupid to set the fire. Doesn't even matter if they were total jerkasses about paying the fine. If you're going to let that stop you from being kind to them, then the world is just that much meaner.
  20. I killed Jessika. Do either of them really die? I chose to save Jessika, but during the fight Kurasi was sitting there leaning against a pillar. I talked to her to get my sword back, and she said that she'd be OK. Probably a bug. But I don't think it matters either way, as I heard neither of them show up ingame after that anyway.
  21. 250k eh? Might be good as a main weapon in non +1 for those too poor to risk a whip (it is whip speed, no?) and it has +3 on the dragon scim as well.
  22. Oh jesus, I've been waiting to enter the strange world of the void for ages now and when we finally do, the grand explanation behind the pests is... [hide] A wizard did it. Herp derp. [/hide] And neither the puzzles or the boss was GM'ish. Only the reqs.
  23. I found an awesome mod on the forums... http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=47148 Basically it adds 4 new arrow types: bomb arrows, ice arrows, fire arrows, and joke arrows. I'm having so much fun with bomb arrows. Givan sum creepers a taste of their own medicine.
  24. Aww, a whole month? Darn. Sounds like an awesome update, though. Except for the torch bit... I hope lanterns will at least light a bigger area to compensate for the fact that they will probably take iron and possibly glass to make.
  25. RS wiki of course, it has pretty much all the info on runescape that is even remotely useful or interesting. Guides, lore, history (of the game), characters, item info, etc. Tip.it can't really compete with a wiki as wikis have an indefinite number of potential editors vs tif's obviously limited number. Though one thing to note, you always have to take info posted on the wiki with a grain of salt, especially if it is relating to new content. Remember when the Balmung came out? Yeah you know what I'm talking about. ;)
