    Today...

Found out today that i got into the Gap placement program through school, so basically next year i'm going to England to work in a boarding school, helping out here and there, hopefully a lot in the music department. Accommodation and food is supplied, and i get 100 pounds a week :D Can't wait, it's going to be awesome...
  2. I've got a Pearl P-122TW, love it, it's really responsive and great fun to play with, definitely recommend it. http://www.pearldrum.com/Products/Hardw ... 122TW.aspx
  3. The devastation is absolutely astonishing, it honestly looks like a post apocalyptic scene. One kid in my mum's kindy class lost a pair of grandparents and another's aunty and uncle lost their house, and i live in sydney. Just shows you how far reaching the affects are. Kranked1, i believe most of the people who have been killed were the ones that tried escaping from their homes, a lot have died in their cars by either trees falling on them or they're just catching fire. Others have been trapped in their houses and perished, the fire moved at astronomical rates. I haven't heard of any reports of firefighters dying by being trapped when trying to rescue people from houses, they're not really doing that kinda work, it's more fighting the bush fire that they're doing.
  4. I ws in the sme sitution s you re now. I bought rzer lycos, but s you cn see the keys stop working sometimes, i've upte the rivers, oesn't help. So even though they re sexy, on't by rzer proucts, they're [bleep]. it's the keys before b + before e @ the moment. Relly nnoying lol. restrting sometimes fixes it, but it's relly temper@ment@l. the G5 looks very nice. I shll eit this when i works, sorry. Haha EDIT: Yeah, bought a razer lycosa for the nice feel of it, like a laptop, and yeah, i've had quiet a few problems with the keys randomly not working, it's a driver issue or something. Anywho, i'm not really happy with it, the backlight is not bright enough during the day, and forget direct sunlight. The touchpad media controls are a nice touch, as is the mic, headphone and usb ports. I bought it for $100AUS, but that might be out of your price range.
  5. It really depends on the music, i have images of the band members dancing through a side-scrolling vector Asian-themed landscape, which could work for something poppy, but not for a metal band hah. In my opinion going for a deliberately unrealistic feel works a lot better than going for a 3d environment where you've tried to make it as life-like as possible, and it just won't look as good unless you've got a team of workers and multiple years of experience behind you. I use premiere pro and after effects for my video work, i find both easy to use and they produce great results. C4D for 3d stuff, but it all costs money, i use them at school. Goodluck with it, keep up updated :D
  6. Yeah I think it's ridiculous, to be brutally honest with you, I'm over the whole plight of the Aborigines thing. Yes, I agree that horrible things were done to them etc etc, but I'm just sick of the whinging. My dad made an interesting point about it today, he said that it was unfortunate, but in the end if the English hadn't colonised then the French or the Dutch would have, and we'd be singing their national anthems today and we'd have a totally different cultural outlook. Point being that there is absolutely no way in the world that the harmony in which the Indigenous people lived in would have continued for any great length of time (a decade max). I think it is just naive to blame the 'Europeans' for ruining a way of life that was going to have to change drastically regardless. Yes, it is a tragic loss of culture and identity, but it was 221 years ago and can we move on? Changing the date of our National holiday is doing nothing practical to improve the condition of these people, there was an article in the Herald this morning talking exactly about that, if people like Mr. Dodson devoted more time to coming up with practical and rational plans to help better the situation of the Indigenous people instead of worrying about the symbolic things the world would be a better place. Or Australia would at least.
  7. At which point too much discussion over the nature of god and religion occurs that it gets banned, and the trickle of news stories begins again. Anyone who's really been here long enough will just see this as a cycle that just keeps going around and round. And yeah, props to the op for creativity.
  8. Haha, fabulous. Thanks for the quick reply :)
  9. G'day all Just wondering what people think of the usefulness of vista readyboost, i just bought a new computer, some people may remember from the 3d animation computer thread a while back. Anyway, i got a free 4gig usb with the copy of vista that i purchased, which was marketed as being for readyboost. Now i have 8gigs of ram, on 64bit vista home premium, so is it actually doing any good for my computer, or would i be better off actually using it as a thumb drive... I've done a bit of research but couldn't come up with a definitive answer. Thanks for your time :) RM

    Stars

It's crazy considering that lots of people can barely see the stars, if at all. In Sydney, which has a pop of 4mil people, you can always see the stars if there isn't cloud cover. Obviously you can't see as many as in the country, where the numbers are truely awe-inspiring, but it's still beautiful to look up at night and gaze at the stars.
  11. Wouldn't know myself, this should probably be in the video games and consoles forum :)
  12. I'll get a 750W psu then, thanks. Also, wouldn't i be able to overclock the q9550 further than the 9450 if i'm willing to pay the extra money? It also looks like i'll be getting 4870x2. Thanks for the continuing help guys. EDIT: I'll look into, thanks Nad, sounds good.
  13. My father got a quote in town for the following parts: Intel Q9550 Asus P5Q mobo Kingston 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 x2 Seagate 500GB 32mb SATA II x2 Nvidia GF9600GT 512 mb DDR3 Thermaltake M9 case, with a 430W psu And a noontec and ritmo card/usb reader Comes to $1536, that's without a keyboard or Monitor. I would love to get an i7 processor but they're are ridiculously expensive, the cheapest that i've seen the 920 is $650 AU, where as the 9550 is $500. Not to mention that the mobo's are way more expensive, as is DDR3. I think most of the stuff is overpriced, i can definitely get it cheaper over the net. The graphics card... bad choice? I didn't have a say in what was quoted, wasn't there. The HD4870 catches my eye. Oh and is the psu too low?
  14. Any particular suggestions? for the other equipment too?
  15. I will be rendering a realistic looking car in a hi def resolution (i am aiming to replicate the results that dangeruss obtains, if you know him from DevArt), with a full 360o revolution, and about 100 versions of it for the various parts. If a workstation card is going to perform very badly with games then i don't want to get one. It basically has to be a mid to high range pc that will be capable of rendering in a reasonable time. If i'm correct, rendering times have a lot more to do with the cpu than the gpu? OldJoe i shall look into it.
  16. definitely do it, i recently did the same thing, albeit from 1-2gbs, and it improved speed out of sight. I was having issues with firefox and displaying several webpages at once, it fixed it instantly. For my laptop it was a really easy swap too, i've got a Dell inspiron 9300, and i just unscrewed the one screw on the bottom for the ram flap, flipped it open and swapped the ram over. My only problem is that now i keep getting this stupid error that 'windows cannot complete the requested API' or something like that, when ever i try and hibernate it. I've looked it up and it seems to only occur with laptops with 2gb of ram or over. I've run the microsoft patch that was meant to fix it but to no avail. It's a pain in the arse, because i use my laptop at school and i used to hibernate it between class, now i have to carry it out of my bag so that it doesn't over heat, or turn it off, and it takes 5mins to turn on lol. Just my two cents. Definitely do it though, for the gains in responsiveness.
  17. G'day fella's. I am in the market to buy a new computer. I won't pretend to know everything about computers either, although i have done a bit of research. I am planning on building it myself, i never have before, but my dad has, it shouldn't be a problem anyway, i've replaced stuff in the family computer numerous times, and i fix ipods blah blah. The computer will be for me to complete my HSC in industrial tech, that's the end of school exams for those non-aussies. We have to create a major project, i'll be using Cinema 4D to create a program that basically does what the car customising parts of the need for speed games do. Shall be fun. So the main focus of this computer is 3D modelling and rendering, hence the quad core. Being able to play unreal tournament 3 at an acceptable framerate would also be nice :) Anyways, i'll definitely be getting a quad-core processor, i've been looking at the Q9550, i was originally going to go for the Q6600 because of the price, but i think the extra hundred bucks is worth the difference in speed. I am aware of how everyone is saying that people should wait for the new i7's, but tbh it's not an option, i need the computer for the beginning of December, as i plan to finish the project over the christmas break. I'll be getting two 500gb harddrives in RAID. Keyboard and mouse i already own, as well as a networking adapter and dvd burner. I have a two grand budget to work with, but i really want to get the best cpu, ram, mobo and graphics card that i can, i have a case that i will use til i can afford a decent one. Things like sound cards i can live without for the moment. Oh and i'll be buying two Acer 24" screens, the 1920x1200 ones. So yes, opinions on my predicament, a suitable cpu, graphics card and ram, i would like at least 4gig, should i be looking at a 64bit operating system? Thanks for all the help :D RM
  18. I love the name Roger ha, for a boy, it just reminds me of pirates ha, personally i'd love to be called it :P
  19. As in you got 6 wickets? Awesome job ha!
  20. Bloody hell, 78 mb/s? you can't be serious. We've got adsl 2, the fastest currently available in Australia and the max speed i've got up to is something like 370kbs downloading from a ftp server located less than 10 kms away. Usually downloads from the internet go at about 60kb/s...
  21. can't find it... :( Well, my words on the $5 were slightly off, the words are up in the top left of the side with the chick, easy to spot. And there's words on the 20 as well, in the lady's hair. I'm just looking at internet photos, too povvo to have real cash, so I can't make them out. D: Not to mention that we have two different five dollar notes :o
  22. It's an interesting place to lurk, there a great deal of differing personalities, runescape is a game played by people froma ll over the world, with different backgrounds cultures and ideals, so i enjoy watching it all come together. Been here three years perhaps, was mainly active back in the days of the media market and early gallery. There are a bunch of awesome people, and a lot shat share my interest in computers and graphics, which i don't really get at school, so it's all cool. :D
  23. Doing it next year, so i start the year twelve course in two weeks, fun fun. Doing 4u English, 2u Religion, modern history, music 2 and Industrial Technology Multimedia. 12 units, i might drop a unit of religion to bring it down to 11, kinda stupid having two useless units. My school makes 11 units the minimum btw. I'm hoping to either do visual communication or industrial design at UTS. And schoolies is booked, my group's got a house in byron :D Good luck to everyone btw, got a couple of friends doing it, rather stressed ha.
  24. No, there are plenty of programs out there that can sync with an ipod. MediaMonkey is the first to come to mind. I use winamp, and it works well, there truely are a plethora of programs to use. Updating the firmware can only be done through itunes though i believe. On another note, i believe the OP said that it can't be viewed on it's side so that the screen becomes widescreen, it can, it has an accelerometer, similar to the touch, which senses when it is flipped around. Personally i have a white 60Gig ipod video 5gen with a black clickwheel running rockbox (a linux utility) instead of the normal ipod operationg system, and i didn't pay a penny for it. Basically assembelled two friend's broken ipods who had had different problems. Works perfectly.
