  1. Depends on the game you're playing. If you don't have performance problems (a.k.a. lag) on Vista, there's no need to install XP. The difference in performance isn't really noticeable unless you're pushing the computer to the limit. Personally, I insisted on windows XP for my laptop's performance, even though it wasn't really necessary and even though XP was more expensive than Vista(!) As a bonus, it's easier to install pirated games on XP!
  2. Don't force yourself to play, take a 2-week break from RS. It'll do you wonders. If you insist on playing, though: Pking might be fun. Set yourself a budget for how much money you can lose. Go f2p pking and stop at the end of the budget. Minigames (as suggested by previous poster) are also good. They're meant to be fun and challenging. Questing might be a decent idea. Unless you hate quests the way I do, quests let you learn a lot about the runescape world.
  3. Don't spend cash. Don't spend money on skills, unless those skills are a quest requirement or are needed for a good moneymaking method. Don't spend money on herblore, prayer, and especially construction. Do activities that earn money and don't make you go crazy. General combat, mining, woodcutting, fishing, thieving, should earn you money. Instead of powercrafting fires, do nats. Instead of smithing steel arrowtips, make steel bars or cannonballs. You'll be fine. One day of grinding should earn you more than 400k, as long as you don't spend the money straight away. Btw, your skills are very high for your level. You also have 202 (holy cabbage) Quest Points.
  4. cooking is definitely the fastest affordable 99. That being said, 99 cooking will take at least 130 hours of grinding and at least 4 million gp losses. Sounds easy? It shouldn't. In my quest for 99 wc, I gave up at lvl 88 - and that's only 1/3 of the exp for lv 99. Trust me, you're not ready to grind for a lvl 99 skill. Try getting to lvl 70 in a random skill first. Then go for lv 85 in a skill. Or you could just do whatever feels fun to you.
  5. If all else fails, try mining pure ess. ;) With concentration, you could get 150k gp an hour, as well as 5k mining exp per hour. Not exactly the best of moneymaking ways, but at least it's not so concentration-intensive as picking flax. And get the kingdom management minigame asap, you could easily get 150k profit per week for 25 minutes work. Another good general principle is: If it loses money, don't do it. Of course there are exceptions, but this is important if you want to pile up the cash.
  6. Edgy furnace messes up your ring of forging because you could forge two iron bars at once with one ring charge. Messes up the whole 5-invies-per-ring system. I personally stick with al-kharid for smelting iron, don't have to worry so much about switching out the rings. Iron bars are probably the way to go. If you want more afkness, go for the cannonballs. 25 exp and 150 gp profit per steel bar used isn't too bad (except it takes 3 or 4 seconds for each steel bar) I think the best compromise between speed and exp is making ranged ammo. Iron knives, steel arrowtips, mith bolts, and addy bolts. You do lose a bit of money, but I'm not sure how much.
  7. Get yourself a rune defender. It's almost a must-have item for medium-high levels. Besides, you're more than halfway there, and you'll get exp while you're at it. If you're unlucky, you might hit lvl 70 attack before getting the rune defender. Definitely do slayer. It's a waste of xp not to do it. Otherwise, the spiders in the stronghold security are always a good choice. No drops, but they're almost afkable. p.s. I'm lvl 98 and I still haven't done monkey madness. Haven't even started it. The whip after 70 att is the usual weapon of choice.
  8. I kill the crocodiles south of pollivneach. Just glory tele to al kharid, run south to shantay's pass, go a bit into the desert, and take the magic carpet to pollivneach. From there, go a bit east, then south. The crocodiles should be down by the river. As a lvl 98, i did my crocs task with a whip, rune def, and desert robes. There's a general store in pollivneach that sells waterskins. If you're only going to do the quest for 34 crocodiles, it's probably not worth it. Considering your stats, that's one tough assignment. I'd suggest metal armor and plenty of monkfish. Buy waterskins in pollivneach of you run out of water.
  9. Interesting. I'm assuming the 53k exp is magic exp? And you know you meant iron when you typed coal. Go edit your post ;) . Some questions: 1. How long does it take to superheat 1k iron? 2. How much smithing exp, and how much mage exp? 3. How much gp lost and exp gained per hour? Interesting method, and losing 3 gp per mage exp isn't too bad, especially when you get some smithing exp. Have you considered superheating mith or addy bars instead? It's tougher on the inventory space and cuts down on mage exp, but it does lose less money.
  10. A quick tip: The void knight is immune to the explosion damage of the splatter. So if the knight's being overrun by shifters, it's not a bad idea to lure a splatter into the crowd of shifters, then killing it. Also, do you know about luring brawlers to guard the void knight? Basically, whoever gets attacked by a brawler runs back to the center, bringing the brawler with him. The brawler blocks attacks from ranged pests. If you see anyone luring the brawler like this, then please don't kill it. This tactic works well in clan worlds and horribly in themed worlds (because some idiot keeps killing the brawler.) I'd also (just to be safe) put one guard on the east and west gates. They should just be there to physically block ranged pests from getting within range of the knight. Main Gate Defender I'd suggest switching priorities 2 and 3. By drawing the attacks of those ranged pests before they attack the knight, you're becoming a meatshield for the knight. Which is a good thing, because you can afford to die but you can't afford to let the knight fall. This is an amazing guide! 10/10! P.S. You can always bring something to alch if you get stuck in the lander for a few minutes... And there is no animation for fletching bolts ;) Do you know the name of any good pc clans that don't require much commitment?
  11. I use one or two dds specs to start the game. For me, it's not a finisher spec but a poisoner. I find that poison does miracles. Once the hunted's poisoned, he is forced to play closer to the center. There have been games where my opponent died because of poison. 6hp damage per 15 seconds might not sound like much... but it's 24 damage per minute, or 48 damage in 2 minutes. That's a lot. You might wanna mention that. And I never knew about bandages healing energy. That's nice! A quick question: Are the +10% def or magic prayers worth it as hunted?
  12. If you're gonna do it with yew longs, string but don't fletch. make yew longs (u) from the logs is a loss of money (around 20-30 ea last time i checked). Stringing yew longs would be a small profit. Personally, I say don't make yew longs. Adding feathers to mith bolts (u) is a better way of gaining fletching exp, since you don't need to bank and can do it almost anywhere. You do lose a bit of money (iirc 1gp/xp) but you get a lot of freedom in when you want to fletch. I've played a few rounds of Pest Control and guarded the knight. Whenever there weren't any monsters, I'd fletch. I could get 500-1000 fletching exp per PC round with mith bolts :P . And the prize money from PC let me break even on fletching \ . Or you could fletch bolts while hunting, or whatever activity has a built-in waiting time.
  13. I'd raise the lowest skills. Get all skills 65+, then get them 70+. Or, you could go for a 99. Try going for the attack cape (or maybe the fletching cape). If I were you, I'd go for 99 attack with slayer, burn out, and then start training up the lowest skills. Minigames are also good fun  Find a good Vinesweeper player, then stand in the vinesweeper area alching or fletching bolts. Free farming exp ftw \
  14. What about running airs on world 16? You'd lose the runecrafting xp, but you'd get a lot more money per trip (assuming your rc level isn't high). Dunno if gold mining on world 16 is viable, though. What I like about air crafting is that there are a few options for what to train in the same run. There's also the possibility of yew cutting, buying eyes of newt from port sarim rune store (might be nerfed now), mining iron in the rimmy mine (not a bad idea for lv 30 miners with addy picks), and perhaps even killing cows for cowhides. With this method you make 97.5k gp and 12k mining exp an hour. Mining rune ess (for f2p) gives... what, 30k gp and 5k mining exp an hour? Don't suggest rune ess mining, because it isn't worth it. (For p2p with high pure ess prices, it's a different story)
  15. Read a good book. I recommend the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy : High-alch is unique because it offers a way of training magic without a bank and without combat. You also stay right where you are. I'd add hunting to that list. I personally suggest pest control. Guard the void knight using fire strike. Then hi-alch whenever there aren't any monsters around. You might have trouble making it to 50 zeal, but no worries.
  16. Try using the dds spec. The dagger (for specs and poison only) is almost overpowered. Then come back and tell me melee isn't worth it ;) Ooh, a range/mage hybrid. I'm a range/mage/melee hybrid  Void melee set doesn't decrease mage attack, so I think I'll stick with that. This is great for me defensively... I don't have ancients  Yes, I know I should get it. Does the 5 seconds also apply to bind and snare and entangle?
  17. I can reasonably assume that snares would last twice as long as binds, so I'd have time for 2 attacks. Of course, snares in p2p aren't really worth it when the guy I'm hunting just tanks... When you say "bind finished" do you mean after the bind spell hits or after the bind effect wears off? Because I find (in f2p) that you could bind someone the minute he starts running away again. (It's fun to use when your prey is at the edge and has used tele-orb)
  18. Tyvm for the info. I go for FoG worlds with a lot of people, so the opponent can't see my attacks  Is mage robes + r scim a good hunter combo in f2p?
  19. Ty for the quick feedback. I'm looking for more fleshed-out, constructive criticism. 1.Snare doesn't last 10 seconds in FoG. I don't know how big the nerf is, but bind spells are nerfed. 2.As for d-long, the spec doesn't do anything for prey. Remember, I'm holding on to a 2-h rock. 3.ty, I may as well use it. Especially in longer games. 4.Okay, so I shouldn't use void. Can you suggest other offense-based armor with the ranging and maging flexibility of void? 5.Does karils give a decent range defense bonus? 6.ty anyway 7.I'm at 29 summoning, almost all of it from ToG. I'm not actively training summoning (though I know I should) 8.I'll have to see whether i'm willing to spend that kind of money. Ty for the tip. 9.As hunter, I don't use up my whole spec bar in the first few seconds. KO as fast as possible with 4 dds specs (3 if one gets wasted) is a nice thought, but my levels aren't exactly up to that task. I'll take that as a yes. In p2p, we have powerful weapons and spells, as well as poison. Deaths come a lot quicker  so I may as well pray. I always end a game with less than 5 prayer left (unless the opponent manages to kill me in 20 seconds), and almost always end with 0 prayer left. I just wonder if it's worth it to conserve prayer this way.
  20. Just a few things I wanted to know about FoG. I'm p2p, but f2p insights are also valuable. Stats are in my sig. 1.How long does snare last in FoG? 2.As hunted, what weapon spec should I use (aside from excalibur and seercull bow)? 3.Is it worth it to cast a -10% def spell on people I'm hunting? 4.Is it worth the time to switch void helms when changing my attack (combat triangle) style? I go in with void melee but wear it with range and mage attacks. 5.If I'm wear black dhide and my hunter is wielding a melee weapon but blasting spells on me (he's right next to me) should I just prot from melee while trusting my armor to hold back the worst of the magic attacks? 6.Does the +10%/15% mage bonus prayer help while defending against a mage? If so, is it more cost-efficient (in terms of prayer points) than the def bonus prayers? 7.Is it worth it to bring heavy armor (e.g. veracs) to FoG? I'm considering full veracs - helm with mage protect prayer. 8.Any suggestions on range weapons? I'm currently using knives. (funny thing is, I use it while standing right next to my prey. They keep their melee protection on. ) I've tried crossbows, but I don't like how slow it is. 9.Should I set my dds to "spec" when I first start hunting? I find that when my prey tellies just as I spec, I don't hit them and lose part of my spec bar. 10. What's the average lvl for f2p FoG players? If there aren't a lot of med/high lvl people there, I might wanna go in there. 11. Is it worth the bother to "prayer switch"? (It's turning your prayer off after your opponent makes his attack and turning prayer back on before his next attack) Is it worth it to learn how to "prayer switch"?
  21. [/hide] Abusing the chat box is dishonorable legal? Legal, my face! Reportable under offensive language, and as a hunter I frequently stop to report one or two if I smell an easy game. You can take your leet FoG tactics elsewhere, spammers, we want to play normally kthx. I also win a lot of my games. My personal motto in FoG: "Go in the middle when he's not expecting it." When I go in a portal chamber, most people run away to the other side of the map - it's surprising to see how many people don't know I can simply walk out and charge up at the fist. And about FoG, the strange thing is: there are more high-level idiots than low-level ones. Last time I beat a level 110-ish (he just tanked in the center, put on protect from melee and probably went AFK; I used newby earth blast and soon he died'd - with hardly any charges to my 1100-something), he went up to me after the match and started deforming my chatbox contents. I was like "Enjoy your ban". Low levels seem not to lament about their losses so much, and I get no more losses to high levels than to low levels. As to the morons who think of FoG as a mage training place: there is a whole area named after its purpose, and the free runes are not there so that you can level up. This is one of the only cases where I'll purposefully try to hide under big fat stacks of other people. Abusing the chatbox is not allowed in RS. But since the rule isn't strictly enforced, it's de facto legal. I'm in the mid lv 90's. I've beaten lvl 100's, 110's, and on one memorable occasion, a lvl 138. I've also been beaten by a lvl 60. I know what it's like to lose a match that was supposed to be in your favor. It's not a nice feeling, but trashtalking your good/lucky opponent doesn't help. Examining where you went wrong does help. As for mage training in FoG... have you heard of the term "emergent gameplay"? This is exactly what it is. FoG wasn't designed for free mage exp, but free mage exp it is nonetheless. Perhaps an exp reduction while playing FoG (sorta like the one in PC) is a good idea. Perhaps not. At least the rocks at the very center are mageable/rangeable over. As a hunter, I'd prefer rocks I can't mage/range over than walls I can't mage/range over (so clicking the prey is easier). As for the follow system, I know it fails. As hunted, I like to take advantage of it, getting my opponent stuck behind some obstacles and forcing them to break their "target lock".
  22. Is this rant aimed at f2p FoG? I don't know about f2p, but tanking is perfectly legit (and effective) in p2p. Remember that it's 3 charges/beat on the outer rim and 28 charges/beat in the center. So it's better to tank for a minute and a half in the center than to stay at the very edge for the whole 10 minute game. In p2p, I find that poison is really useful. There have been games where I poison my prey. Then they run to the edge. I think to myself, "what's the point of that?". So I follow them to the edge. I stay about 8-10 squares away from them, but don't attack. The poison takes off 6hp every 15 seconds, and i'm left wondering why the idiot opponent doesn't telly to the center. In p2p FoG, it's much harder to run away from your opponent (15 sec binds instead of 5 sec binds). Plus, ice ancients. So tanking and dying makes more sense than running and dying at the edge. Of course, you'd be crazy not to hide for your first few seconds, but tanking is superior once you've been found. As for those playing for mage exp, let them. They just throw the game in your favor? Let them. The rating system is screwed up as it is and rewards quantity instead of quality. (at 1500 rating, I threw a game to a newb with 0 rating. I only lost 10 rating.) Tankers who don't know strategy? Let em tank. If you beat others (even idiot ones) you deserve that extra rating.
  23. Jagex never really killed RWT. They just made it cost-inefficient for all the gold farmers. In the same vein, I believe Jagex has done enough (perhaps a wee bit too much) to combat RWT. You don't see any of those lvl3 ess bots/ gold farmers anymore. I haven't seen a lot of lvl3 yew cutters or lobby fishers. That, to me, is progress. I know that big parts of RS were sacrificed to cripple RWT. Merching (arguable), staking, PKing (arguable), clan drop parties, and for seven months, item lending, were sacrificed. RWTing in RS is much less prominent than it has been. (I remember when I could only get 2-3 yew logs from a yew tree, there were usually 7-10 lv3 yew cutters cutting down a tree. Now I usually only have to share with 1-2 other people.) RWT is crippled. Let me say that again. RWT is crippled. It's not worth sacrificing even more parts of RS to completely eradicate RWT. I say, let the legit no-lifers no-life. 36 hours of straight play-time is a bad idea, but let whoever wants to do so do so. Perhaps, on Dec 10 07, these suggestions would have been worth considering. But since RWTing is in such a sorry state now, the suggestions are unnecessary. And to those who call for IP logging: what would you do about proxies?

    Whip

The changed look is something you just get used to. I think the whip now looks a bit strange while you're running, but I feel it just looks more realistic. I think we all, to some extent, hate change for the sake of change. Watts, keep playing. In two weeks or so, tell us how you feel about the whip's animation ;)
  25. I remember playing FoG one time. Some random guy was saying "Person X is a runner noob!" Then I play a game against Person X. As a hunter, I didn't dash to the center but took the outside route. Met Person X halfway, then killed him. It's the only time that hearing someone get called a runner noob has made me... happy. Back OT: I have three basic categories for techniques: Honorable legal (champ), Dishonorable legal (cheap), and Illegal (cheat). I'm sure everyone uses these categories; only the stuff inside the categories differs from person to person. I consider almost everything you can legally do in FoG to be Honorable legal (this includes tanking, house-hopping, and running). The only thing I consider dishonorable legal is "abusing the chat box," which includes lying to your opponent about your charge status or drawing pornographic ASCII art. Using @@@@@@ to cover your health bar is borderline honorable/dishonorable. Illegal techniques would be hacking into the RS client. I haven't seen any illegal techniques. I'm a hider/tanker hybrid with a bit of running mixed in. I win a lot of my games. My usual response to those who call me a runner/hider noob is "I beat you" or "I won." Because winning (legally) is everything ;) . My strategy against runner/hider noobs is simple: Find them, entangle, lay in one or two dds specs, attack normally until they run out of sight (since they should have more run energy). Go to the center. If the prey starts wall-hugging again, rest assured that your poison will do the trick.
