  1. This is bad for your hardware if you keep shutting down like this. You should only pull the power cord or hold the power button when you absolutely have to (Ex: frozen machine). Constantly shutting down like you are will more than likely cause your hardware to fail well before it should have. Using Start > Shutdown is a much, much better idea.
  2. I guess you missed the post from 3 days ago that said it's working again...
  3. Built in [de]compression tool. The only changes made so far have been turning UAC off, removing all the crapware, adding it to the network (after 4 hours of headaches and Vista deciding it would finally join it the next day) and installing FireFox. The hardware has already been tested and is all fine (first thing I do with a new machine). I'll test WinRAR tomorrow when I get my hands on the machine again. I still doubt it's an isolated problem though, due to all the other posts of slow file functions I've seen scattered around the net.
  4. Except for the fact it takes Vista 5+ minutes to decompress a 1.2mb zip file where XP takes seconds, Vista's copying/cutting/pasting takes forever and a day, hardware requirements have doubled and UAC is a steaming pile of junk that will drive even the hardcore Windows user insane (I turned it off 15 minutes into configuring stuff after what felt like a couple hundred 'ok' prompts). The only advantage I have found with Vista over the 5 other XP machines in my house has been that it boots slightly faster from a cold start than the others, which doesn't amount to much. I'd rather spend another $80 downgrading the new Core2 laptop we got to XP just so file functions are usable again. Horridly slow transfer rates when you're dealing with multiple gigabyte sets of pictures are not a good thing.
  5. You shouldn't be using something as evidence if you don't know what you're talking about. That 100Mbps is your LAN speed, not your true download speed. Test it using speedtest.net and you'll see. The last post on it was Wed Sep 21, 2005 now what use is it to have that in the archive. (Not to start a flam war.) It's much easier to just leave them there instead of spending thousands of hours pruning them by hand while trying to leave the topics people may actually want to read again. You're complaining about something just to be complaining from the looks of it. You're trusting sources that are known to be shady (or random unproven ones) to make your point and you are the only one complaining about this. Tip.It is constantly being bombared by users and if it truely was slow loading and it was Tip.It's problem, there would be tons of people complaining about it, not just one.
  6. Why does it matter? Your signature is not suppose to be a billboard. It is a simple unique tag added to a post. If you're so hard pressed to pack everything you can into the space, you're adding too much and need to remove some of it. Being right at the limit, you should know there is the possibility something could get changed or the forums could hiccup and cut it off. Compared to everyone's massive signatures posting here complaining, my short little sig was left untouched. Should be a bit of hint that you're packing too much into it. Like Albosky said, you should have kept a backup for all the junk you have plastered in there. If you didn't, it obviously wasn't that important.
  7. Thank you for copying a 2 month old news article, word for word. You should be smacked for that. Extremely hard. :notalk:
  8. 1) A buisness will not being using the piddly little XP firewall. They will be using a hardware firewall most of the workers don't have access to. Even with it turned on, the XP firewall doesn't block RS. 2) 'XP OEM' is not a version of XP. An 'OEM' copy is sold with a new computer or hardware at a lower price for system builders. OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer; As in Dell or another manufacturer. Erm, no. This is not his computer, not his parent's computer and even then, this wouldn't fix it even if he had access to do it. Bottom line, have a clue before you reply please.
  9. If you're up for paying $45 a month, the RoadRunner package would be the best choice unless you can find another provider to compare to. Faster than the wireless provider for the same price is always a good thing.
  10. You guys are jumping the gun on this. Mainstream support for XP doesn't end until 2009. The 2008 date is just the official end of OEM and retail sales of XP, not support. After that 2009 date XP will still be supported by security updates until 2014. Right now, Vista is a major flop, but nothing is forcing you to upgrade to it and nothing will do so until 2014 when support officially drops. This date has been known for at least 6 months now, if not a year or more. Even after 2014, you are not required to upgrade, MS just says 'sorry, can't help you' after that date.
  11. Even if the forum wasn't pruned and topics were allowed to build up, there would be so many repeat topics searching would be near impossible. Tack that on top of phpBB's crappy search and you'll never find what you're looking for. I really don't see the point in a rants board for RS here either. Every rant I ever see (on top of what's on page 1 right now) is nothing more than a repeat of something that's been posted hundreds of times before. Personal opinions on why sucks, why sucked, why Jagex is wrong and or some derivative of those. There is rarely an actual issue brought up that's worth debating seriously. There really isn't much room for complaining when the threads falling off Jagex's page 50 are no more than 24 hours old while the threads here span back nearly 3 months. If it hasn't been revived in 3 months its rather dead and not worth keeping on top of the multiple other copies that are bound to be posted.
  12. More than likely ust a bad button as Doomster said. A virus that blocks clicks is an amazing waste of time compared to what someone could actually do with your infected machine. :?
  13. If you have another ISP in the area, I suggest checking their prices. That package is a rip off for those speeds. I currently have 8000 down 512 up for that same price. I'd also suggest trying to find a land line instead of any kind of wireless provider for better stability and more than likely a lower price.
  14. Excel has a 'save as web page' option in the file menu. It's some jumbled MS html, but it does the job fairly well for posting online. Doing it that way makes sure people aren't concerned about infected xls files and you can post it just about anywhere for linking to.
  15. Installing something like ubuntu can be very easy, it's just point and click. The problems arise when something breaks and leaves your installation or whole machine useless (including the windows partition). An example being the last set of upgrades Ubuntu did on my laptop. I didn't notice it was upgrading the kernel and it decided to edit GRUB in the process, leaving the machine unbootable until I fixed it. Not something a newbie will deal well with. You can download the Ubuntu cd and just run it as a live cd without installing it if you just want to browse around and see what it's like. It'll be a bit a slower than actually installing it on your machine but it will give you a good idea how things work.
  16. If you're saying my comments were too exaggerated, no they weren't. It's a fact that my line has only died once in a 3 to 4 year period due to ISP problems. If you're referring to your own comments, then I must agree.
  17. If that's the case, your perception of 'one of the best in the country' is severely scewed. If slow speeds and no connectivity is 'the best' then my 8000/512 cable line looks like god. It is on and pumping full speed 24/7/365 and when it isn't, it's due to a complete power failure to the neighborhood. There has been one instance in the last 3 to 4 years that a failure of my line was due to something Cox had to fix, and that was resolved within the hour. An ISP providing unstable speeds and downtime is ripping you off, plain and simple. Expecting speed fluctuations and downtime does nothing more than feed the crap they're shoving down everyone's throats as 'the best'.
  18. This is untrue. Windows is allowed to be transfered between owners as long as the previous owner no longer has a working copy using the same product key. Seeing that it's a P3, it's very unlikely the company that sold/dumped it is still using the key. If anything, the company that dumped the box is liable for letting their (now outdated) license key out into the world. Just because he doesn't have installation media doesn't mean the install is illegal. All that truly matters for a 'legal' windows installation is a valid product key. MS doesn't care where that key or the machine holding the key goes after someone coughs up the cash for it's use.
  19. But then he can't go digging threw all the data the company will have left on the machine by not doing that before trashing it.
  20. We look into them 'way too much' because that's usually what it takes to figure out what's actually wrong instead of just assuming it's your ISP working on something. People that assume it's just the ISP 'working' every time something like this happens end up getting shafted in the end because they're paying for unstable services.
  21. It can. It'll make for a good replacement of MS Paint after you play with it a bit and figure things out. You will need to install both GTK and GIMP from the GIMP-Win download page if you decide to use it.
  22. MS in their infinite wisdom turned it on by default. That's one of the first things I turn off on a new system. Annoying as hell not knowing what kind of file I'm clicking on.
  23. Note the threats say 0. Just because it shows up in the list as changed doesn't mean its infected...
  24. Unless it's a complete power failure, this will not change anything. An UPS is nothing more than a backup battery. This won't change anything. Random signal drops won't be caused by any settings you can change in the router. ------ Is your line constantly being used (torrents, large downloads, ect)? I have heard that the WRT54's can have issues if you have a lot of connections in and out (ex large torrents swarms). I have a WRT54GS v4 (4.70.6 firmware) and have *never* had it drop on me, even when I've maxed out my line. We also have that same wireless adapter plugged into my dad's tower upstairs and on the other side of the house with no issues. Does is happen at all when you're plugged in with a cable? If you are going to buy a new WRT54, buy the GL. They changed the firmware on the G and GS to some closed source software that has a lot of known issues. The GL (slightly more expensive) uses the opensource linux firmware (what my older GS currently runs with no issues).
  25. Clean the ball and rollers with a cotton swab and a light amount of rubbing alcohol (don't drown the mouse in it :P) after picking out the big chunks of gunk with tweezers or some other small tool. It would also be a good idea to clean the desk and/or mouse pad so the mouse doesn't have any loose particles to pick up any more. Getting a good optical (not some cheap $10 optical) would be a good idea when you find the money, no more cleaning trackballs.
