  1. Then it listed a bunch of files located on my computer then at the end it said "disk check now complete" then rebooted to my main screen... That sounds a lot like the windows disk check that runs after an "improper shutdown" on some machines. Does it have a blue screen and a percentage bar across the bottom? It's not anything bad, but doesn't help with the problem unfortunately. :( Unless someone else has some other thoughts on it, it's probably time to take it in to a computer shop and talk face to face with someone or call Acer to help solve the problem. :? Gonna guess you have a total of 512mb because it's a laptop and most likely uses integrated video, which will be where the other 64mb went. It's not a bad amount, but not the greatest if you're playing any high end games. Having another 512mb installed wouldn't be a bad idea but isn't not something to worry about.
  2. If people posted in the correct place, they wouldn't have to waste the time moving things. Your clan forum more than likely doesn't support tens of thousands of users or require much modding work to keep in order. Looking at the clan forum in your sig, it doesn't. When you're reading at least a few hundred posts a day, moving all the bad threads becomes a huge waste of time.
  3. The mods lock things so people realize it's in the wrong forum and start posting in the correct forum, therefore reducing work. If they just move everything, nobody learns, they keep posting it in the wrong place, and it just creates more work for the mods. Making people post in the correct place the first time reduces work for them and keeps the incorrect forum posts from multiplying like rabbits.
  4. XP MCE will come preinstalled with all the needed drivers for the hardware included in the laptop. Downgrading to Win 2k means you could lose some hardware support (not sure what, but it's a possibility) and you shorten the life span of any security updates Microsoft will be sending out. It could also void any support you'd have from the manufacturer by using an OS they don't support.
  5. Yes Saying "Yes" doesn't help us much because he asked 2 vastly different questions...
  6. Depends on how much you currently have and what kind of games you play. Go to: Start > Control Panel > System On the window that opens up, there should be a windows logo and in the bottom right corner there will be some system info under "Computer:". It should list your CPU speed and amount of RAM you currently have. Most of the time just taking compressed air and blowing any dust out of it will fix any overheating problem. If the fans really have died the whole thing needs to be sent back to Acer for replacement by them because of defective parts.
  7. Setting the laptop on a hard, flat surface (like a table) will make sure it's getting good airflow. Bad RAM would mean part of the RAM is defective (broken) and can be the cause of problems sometimes. Insufficient RAM means the computer doesn't have enough RAM to properly do what it's doing. Neither of these sound like the case because of the next quote. :P If possible, try to take a picture of the screen or write down exactly what it says next time you see the message. It could help out quite a bit.
  8. It won't. On a cable connection you won't notice any difference. On dialup, some sites will take slightly longer to load the first time you go to them after clearing the files. After the first load it will be back to normal again. Nothing bad about it at all. :P
  9. For IE6: Tools > Internet Options > General Tab (should be the first selected) Click the "Delete Files" button. Click OK for the box that opens asking about "Offline content". For IE7: Tools > Internet Options > General Tab (should be the first selected) Click the "Delete" button under Browsing History. In the window that's opened click "Delete files..." next to "Temporary Internet Files". ----- If you haven't made any other major changes to the computer when it started, I don't know what else it could be aside from routing problems you can't control. :? Edit: Weez beat me too it while my dialup reconnect. :wall:
  10. No troubles for me either using FireFox on 3 different machines. I've never used Safari (or a Mac in general for more than 15 minutes), so I'm little help there. :?
  11. Insufficient RAM shouldn't cause a reboot under any condition. Bad RAM can, but that could be just one of several causes. Are all of your drivers up to date (video card, ect)? All the latest windows updates installed? Any recent driver or hardware changes?
  12. Try clearing IE's cache. It may also just be a random routing problem out on the internet if you're getting sent to a different server for the world select and game pages.
  13. Unless you're posting them for stock photography for others to use at that resolution, or planning to sell them, you aren't going to have much fun trying to host 3mb pictures for family and friends to look at. What are you using the pictures for? Kinda hard to suggest things without knowing the end goal. :?
  14. If the speakers still work fine it's nothing to worry about. The connection to the LED most likely just came loose and isn't making good contact for power. Nothing to worry about. If the speakers don't work any more along with the flickering light, it's time to start looking for some new speakers. :P
  15. You'll need to write a script to rip and parse the highscores page off runescape.com, store the level data and then use PHP's image manipulation commands to insert the data into your images and output it. I don't personally don't know of any tutorials for just this because it's very limited in it's usefulness. :?
  16. Norton is known to be a resource hog on a lot of machines. Not much you can do if it's a parent forcing it on the machine. :( You could try showing them that installing Norton is lagging the machine (or RS) and try getting them to switch back to McAfee or another solution like AVG Free , Nod32, or Avast. All 3 have payed version you could buy if it makes anyone feel more secure.
  17. I wish more people would follow this thread so we don't have to constantly ask people to post their hardware specs and any recent changes up to the problem starting... :wall:
  18. Using the highscores URL, replace with the rsn you want to look up. Open the URL through your code, strip the HTML and then work with the bare text to find the info you need. I've never done this in Java so I don't know the specifics but the methods for getting to the info are the same.
  19. Take this as a suggestion, not an insult.. But in the year 2006, you shouldn't be using a 56k modem 'especially' for online gaming. :) That's very likely the only reason you're getting "connection losts" if your internet otherwise works fine. If you couldn't log in at all, it could be a different problem. Now that you mention that, I would say it's a good idea to get 'at least' a 1mb+ cable modem, though a 256k will do o.k. if you just browse around and play RS. RS bandwidth use is well under the limits of 56k and shouldn't cause you any problems if you live in any decent sized town. Some areas also don't have cable rolled out and distances are too great for DSL connections, leaving people with dialup, or high priced, high latency satellite. Have you tryed different servers? Do you have all the drivers for the modem installed? Has anything else on your machine changed since the storm?
  20. In the schedule dialog, click "Edit Schedule" with the scheduled scan highlighted and uncheck the "Periodically run anti-virus test" box. I suggest leaving scheduled updates on even with the scheduled scan removed. :P
  21. DreamWeaver isn't even worth pirating after you have a basic understanding of HTML code. The code it's WYSIWYG side generates is horrendous and the code editor isn't anything special you can't replace with notepadd++ or editplus.
  22. I never said you did. He commented on a signature generator. Random signature generators have 0 to do with HTML, which he said isn't needed if you know HTML. Removing random things from HJT logs because "it could be a virus" can break peoples computers and isn't a good thing to be doing.
  23. And if you had any clue what you were saying, you would know dynamic signatures have nothing to do with HTML and everything to do with PHP and image output. If you don't know what it is, you shouldn't be responding to HJT logs. Period.
  24. Nvw got it. That 64mb will be used by the graphics system for the display. You can general find a setting in the BIOS to change the amount of memory allocated to video from 64 to 32 or 16 and so on. Losing 64mb out of a gig isn't all that much though and isn't anything to worry about. :P
