  1. err, no. They are both standards for computer cables. Just read the wikipedia articles Here for SATA and Here for PATA.
  2. I will hate you so much if the price drops in a month :P  :D hehe good thing no one has invented a device to punch people in the face over the internet.
  3. err, were you inserting it in an internal SATA or PATA port, or is it a USB drive? SATA was made to be hot swappable, but its still usually a bad idea. As said above, it is likley that the mainboard on the hard drive is messed up, and is sending bad signals to the motherboard, causing those problems.
  4. Ipod prices rarely change. Apple has specific price points they cater to, and because of that the only lineup change you will ever see is the products themselves changing. So no, for at least another year, there will be no Ipod price drop.
  5. It depends on your skill with linux. Be aware that linux is MUCH more difficult to use then windows, and it generally takes lots of tweaking and fiddling to get it right. For a first time user, Ubuntu, or some dirivitive of it is generally reccomended.
  6. if It matters at all, a standard DVD you buy at the store can hold 4.7gb of data, so even though the disk is not completely full, you can pretty much guarntee that any standard hollywood movie will fit on an ipod, with room to spare for music.
  7. aside from having no number pad, the dinovo edge is a great keyboard. It is a keyboard that you dock to recharge, but if you don't want to the lithium ion batteries last about two weeks of heavy use without a recharge. Its actually the keyboard I have, and if your coding from the sofa, the laptop-like touchpad will come in handy. Plus, its a beautiful keyboard.
  8. like I already said, the biggest problem with high end mice is that they are all right handed. Only the middle/low end mice without special shapes are ambidextrous. The MX revolution, however comes with a charging base and has a built in Lithium Ion battery, and the G7 comes with two hot swappable lithium batteries and a charging station for them. The other two are wired, so obviously they don't need batteries.
  9. Well the biggest problem you'll run into is that most high end mice are made to be used right handed only. The one you mentioned as having replaceable face plates is probably the Logitech G9. Its a brand new, purely gaming mouse. The biggest problem I have with it is that it's wired, which may or may not be a big problem with you. Its predecessor, the Logitech G7 and the G5, its corded counterpart are the predecessors to the G9, and are still top of the line, great mice. Personally, however I would reccomend the Logitech MX revolution. Unlike the others, It is not a dedicated gaming mouse, but one designed for office and graphic design use. Ive read that people have taken it apart and it uses essentially the same laser assembly as the G9. This is the mouse I have, and it also has many other features which are not as useful in a gaming setting, like a second side scroll wheel, but they really come in handy in office/internet applications. Plus, If a concern of yours is making your desk look good. It looks VERY sharp sitting on a desk. All of these mice are Logitech's top of the line successors to the mx510, so they should all serve you well.
  10. the biggest problem is a lack of RAM. Game systems run only a certain thing-games, so programs tend to be much more stingy with RAM usage. While the processor is powerful enough on the wii, there is not enough RAM to run runesape correctly. The only system that could even theoretically run runescape would be the PS3, and even then it would only just barely meet the minimum requirements, clocking in with 128MB of RAM. High speed RAM, but still just 128MB.
  11. That is horrible. I can see some mental conditions being blacklisted for obvious medical reasons, but people with post traumatic stress pose no danger to themselves or others. This, however is a bill I don't see passing. The republicans, along with a band of pro gun democrats, will stop it.
  12. no, this is how the scam works- first, he sends you the check, because of a banking law, banks are REQUIRED to cash checks and deposit the money into your account the day you deposit it. You get the money, withdraw the 700$ you are to send back to him, and send it. Later, when the check bounces, your bank contacts you saying that the check bounced and you are required to pay the bank back 1100 dollars, so you are out the money.
  13. Wow, those are some strict laws. Here you can buy an assault rifle with nothing more then a gun safety course and 100$ for a license (A friend of mine has an M16 hanging on his wall), and you can't even have real-looking BB guns? That must be kind of annoying, particularly with that face-to-face law, if airsoft shops are anywhere near as rare there as they are here.
  14. is it a desktop? if you REALLY wanted to get rid of them, you could cut the wire from the motherboard to the port, that would make the port useless though. Sounds like a hardware problem to me though.
  15. it sounds like a hard drive failure, as the computer sounds like it completed POST but could not find the windows files for some reason or another. Try opening the computer case, and locating the hard drive (It should be the smaller, grey rectangle about the size of the floppy drive sitting on a rack just below the CD drive(s) and either above or below the floppy drive). Then turn the computer on, and try to figure out if the hard drive is making any noise at all. If it is, then it may still be the problem, but if its not making any noise at all, then its obviously the failed part. While your at it, check that the long, grey flat cable and four pin multicolored power cable are securily plugged in to their slot. Should the hard drive be the actual problem, it will need to be replaced. Your data will most likley be gone unless you have an extra 500$ for professonal data recovery, but replacing the hard drive is easy and it conly costs like 50$.
  16. I second what blade said, and also if you have an x300 series graphics card in your computer, then I'm sure the other components are plenty fast to run runescape. It runs fine on a Pentium 2 laptop. Also, that ping is VERY high, so I would check on that. Normally, your ping should not pass 150 or so.
  17. err no. The 590 is the previous generation of high end NVIDIA chipsets. Its old as it is. The chipset I posted, the 680i, is the current high end chipset put out by NVIDIA. When you are talking about 2 x8 lanes, you are referring to the 650i chipset.
  18. essentially with the processor you are right. Water cooling is expensive and difficult to hook up, and without using pipes made for commercial home usage (which is very expensive) you are virtually guaranteed a leak or a failure within a year. Really, water cooling is more trouble then its worth, stay away from it. As far as hdd coolers, the simple fact is that hard drives don't need cooling. They produce very little heat on their own, and even a completely closed case will have no problem with overheating hard drives. Massive cooling for a hard drive does not increase performance anyway, so the coolers are basically just "fluff".
  19. well, GHZ isn't everything. All that measures is how many "clocks", or cycles a processor can complete in a given amount of time. Think of it this way: A pentium 4 based on the netburst architecture can run at say, 3.4 GHZ and can run at 2 instructions per clock, well 3.4*2=6.8, right? well the core architecture on current Intel chips, like the core 2 duo's and quads, would run at say 2.4 GHZ but be able to process 4 instructions per clock, so 2.4*4= 9.6, times another 4 for the four cores equals 38.4, right? While instructions per clock is just one factor in determining Processor speed and the numbers I made up were just for demonstration, you get the point. Essentially, while the core based processors run at a lower GHZ rating then the netburst based processors, they are more efficient, with the added bonus that lower clock (GHZ) speed means MUCH less heat output. About AMD- when you looked up the numbers, AMD was on top. The Athalon processors Ran cooler and faster then their pentium 4 counterparts, but with the release of the core 2 duo's and quads, AMD lost the lead. As far as programs being compatible with multithreading- Yes, for the most part, programs must be compatible with multithreading to be used in a multi core chip, but pretty much all new games are. off the top of my head bioshock and supreme commander both take advantage of three cores, and call of juarez can use four. Even if you are running a single threaded application, like a game a multithreaded processor can help you. One core handles the game, while another handles background processes and another handles say network applications when you are LAN playing or playing on the internet. As far as the core 2 duo or quad - when Intel built the core 2 quad, all they did was take a pair of core 2 duos and put them in one processor shell. Nothing else, just that and drivers. While a core 2 quad will overclock slower then a duo due to twice as much heat being produced compared to a duo, the simple fact that you are essentially getting two processors on one chip is a good deal in itself. Even the heat issue shouldn't be too bad, as the core based processors are known for running EXTREMELY cool. oh and a RAID 0 array does not increase the chances of failure of either drive, but if only one drive, not both fails, then you lose all your data, so the chance of losing data is higher. WOW, long post, time to go to bed now :D
  20. while the raptors will run faster, the performance bonus is negligible, particularly with 4 gigs + of memory. The only improvements you will see will run about 0.05% of actual average computer speed, as you wont be using the page file on the hdd at all. believe me, they are a waste unless you have several thousand dollars to burn (4000+). I own a couple, and aside from a improvement of a few seconds at bootup, I cannot tell the difference between them and a pair of WD regular hard drives. (I have 2 RAID arrays, 2 500 gig drives, and 2 raptors.) The only other difference that would matter between my setup and yours is that I have 8 gigs of memory.
  21. err, if you mean the designer, you would have to be over 110 years old. He died in 1897 according to thewikipedia article.
  22. well theres a few things i'd like to point out. First is the hard drives. While a pair of Raptors is fast, the newest revision of western digital hard drives, with model numbers ending in AAKS has performance that runs toe-to-toe with the current generation of Raptors, and is faster then the older revision drives. (even with the slower spin speed) Plus, they are a lot cheaper, with a 750 gig drive here going for 40$ less then a Raptor. The only real difference you will notice is that the case of the drive does not look as cool :D As far as the graphics card goes, believe it or not but a single 8800 GTS 640mb card will easily beat a pair of 8600's in SLI, and compatibility for a single card is much better then when trying to put two together in SLI. This is the card I would recommend. EVGA is known in the graphics business as one of the better companies for customer support, and the warranties are much more lenient then other manufacturers (I.E taking the heatsink off the card does not void the warranty) Then there is the processor. Unless you already own an AMD processor you are planning on using, I would go with an intel processor. Large hardware sites (like toms hardware) show that the newest intel processors stomp on the AMD ones. I would recommend a core 2 quad q6600 Here. Here is a comparison of the processor you posted, with the one I posted. This is the motherboard I would recommend to go with that processor. Not as much "Bling" as the one you posted, but it is faster. If you really like Asus, This is the equivalent intel motherboard to the one you posted, but it is also VERY expensive. There you go, a 30% faster computer for the same price!
  23. Well, Ive met Lance Armstrong in a drugstore before, he was in line in front of us and the clerk was amazed when she read his credit card. Ive also met Neil Armstrong at the party for the naming of a building after him at Purdue university. I also saw Keith Richards at a restaurant in Toronto once. So lots of Armstrong's.
  24. some people have had problems with ipods, but if you get one, get the extended warranty and you will have NO problems whatsoever. All the tech support is located in California, so they speak English, and I have never had a problem getting one fixed. My brother had one of the original ipods, and after about 2 1/2 years, it started to act up. He called them, and they sent him a new one (new and of the same, older generation), which also acted up. Then he called them again, and they said they would send him a new one, don't even worry about sending the old one back. So they sent him a BRAND NEW 80 gig Ipod video in the mail. Great deal, considering the first one he had didn't have a color screen.
