  1. I'd be glad to help out, at this point given our history it only seems natural. :P I'm pretty good with color schemes/layouts. I could photoshop up a website design image-wise for you to code, but I don't know how to code anything myself. I'd like to start looking at sample mechscape artwork and coming up with a color and design scheme based off that. Get back to me with what you're currently working on.
  2. As far as passive activities go, it ranks pretty high up there. Internet use on the other hand can be a little more of an active/stimulating use of your mind. I think if you took brain scans of the two activities you'd find a pretty big difference.
  3. Congrats Dark Dude! Now, with great power comes... nah, not going to go there... :P
  4. ^ I never knew that, who is Iran's real dictator then? Of note, in Iran, riots are happening because of a stolen election. In LA, riots happened because of a basketball game.
  5. Maybe that's the reason I never could grind for over an hour or two... I never listened to metal. Classic rock doesn't really promote that mentality I guess.
  6. There is an unbelievable range of the types of fraternities you can join. If you would describe what you're really looking for, that would help a lot. Instead, I'll tell you what path I took. My first semester I felt like all fraternities were full of jerks, and if you wanted to join one you'd have to go through hell. The ones that tried to get me to join felt like they were somehow trying to exploit me or something. But the next semester I found a smaller one that just started up on campus, TDX. I met all the guys in it, and they really felt like they were genuine, cool people. They were in it solely to have a good time and have fun. Nothing about the fratty image, no overly arrogant people, etc. There wasn't any pressure, and rushing was fine. Granted it's a smaller frat, but I've become such great friends with everyone in it and it's great having that circle of support/friendship when you need it, especially with everything you go through in college. I have absolutely no regrets about joining it, and have had some of my best memories so far in college from things we've done together. It's a great way to take a leadership role on campus, and make even more friends. Once you move out of the dorms it's really hard to meet new people, but joining a social organization is a great way to do it. Here's my advice for you. Go to some big frats and see how you fit. Talk to the brothers. You'll know if it's for you. Also try smaller fraternities. They're a lot closer, you won't have to commit as much time if you're going to be taking hard classes, and pledging will be a lot easier. Look some up on your school's directory and brothers will be lining up to meet you and talk if you are interested in hearing about their fraternity. Just remember that you're holding all the cards. Frats put up images sometimes that they're above anyone rushing, but they really do need people to rush, so remember that. Definitely try it though, you'll know quickly enough if it's for you or not.
  7. If a dog's mind works like a machine, the input would be the dog's name. The output would be (after training) walking over. Since he's being rewarded with affection or treats, it's simply another case of positive reinforcement that eventually becomes habit. The concept of names is way above the cognitive capacity of a dog. Dogs can walk over to a family member if they're trained to when they hear the name, but that's only an association, nothing more. It's kind of funny actually, this came up on digg today and has to do with what we're talking about: http://digg.com/d1tRrT @rsloser22: Yeah it is, I was pretty disappointed to find this all out, but when you begin studying it and looking at non-human brains and behavior on a scientific level, it gets pretty amazing, just in a different way.

I see this thread has taken that route again. Ok, I'll give you things from my perspective. Two years ago I had a collapsed lung, unrelated to smoking as I hadn't, and continue not to smoke. I don't know if things would be different had I not had the injury, but I still think I have a unique enough perspective. I do think marijuana needs to be legalized. Increasingly the movement for legalization has been progressing as prominent figures in the news and media are speaking in favor of legalization. I can tell you things such as nobody has ever died from smoking weed, it is non-addictive, it has tremendous medical value, the only harm obtained from it is through the action of inhaling smoke which is no different than smoking any other substance, and it would be a tremendous boom in this economic climate. I'm not going to write a term paper on it so I instead googled an article for you to further explain the pros (and more importantly, lack of cons): http://digg.com/d1CIw8
  9. While I'm disappointed by this loss, at least the Wings will have an epic game seven win in Detroit. There's nothing like watching your team skate with the cup to "We are the Champions" at home. Really though, it should be a great game either way. Tonight both teams played really well I thought.

You do that on purpose Adam? That, among other things in the post. :P Hey guys, let's decide. Since there's clearly no room left for discussion about what you should do, I say we take this thread for a ride on a turn for the worst and come up with the most not-funny puns possible about marijuana OR turn it into the usual debate over whether or not weed is good or bad. I have to say, the options are pretty exciting. I eagerly anticipate the future of this thread.
  11. The majority of animals are no different from computers, unfortunately. They're intelligent and their brains are amazingly complicated, but in reality their concept of existence is limited to reacting to whatever stimuli are presented. Yes they can be smart, yes they can appear to show compassion, but what we perceive as personality is really a set of tools animals have adapted to best exploit their environment. I'm a neuroscience major at Umich. My first biopsych class was pretty depressing. It does turn out animals are more like machines. Input (stimulus) -> output (behavior). There are the exceptions of animals that can recognize themselves in mirrors, but even then it is less intriguing than you'd think it would be. An unrelated example, when dolphins do tricks where they work together and have to communicate with each other for treats, they aren't consciously working together. Their minds work more like logarithms, trying out behavioral combinations until something works and they stick with it.

"I...was...holding...it...for...a...friend?...." Bud, you're going to have to probably man up and face your parent's consequences for the bud. Parents will probably just have you pull weeds in the garden or something. I doubt your punishment will be an all time high.
  13. YOU'RE NOT MY TARGET AUDIENCE. Glad you did though. Good to hear from you. What is Olly known for?
  14. As a neuroscientist, I'll give him some credit. But based off of one study, no real claims can be made yet. The placebo effect could be occuring for two reasons 1: The ring tone does work as expected and triggers appropriate physiological motherhood responses. 2: The ring tone does not work as expected and the physiological response is due solely to the placebo effect of her expecting larger breasts. Either way the ring tone technically works, but the acting mechanism differs by a lot, and is the most important variable. He needs to do more varied testing and in larger amounts. This could have been a fluke. Either way, it's very interesting, and hopefully will be applied in a much broader scale than just for aesthetic reasons.
  15. Since I stopped playing years ago, I would like to know from TIF's perspective who the community considers famous. Names change drastically with time, and I'm curious which names stood the test of time. List names of rs players that are famous now, that you consider to have fame that stood the test of time, have impacted the runescape community, or even our own TIF community, and give a few words for each name explaining why. Try to come up with 5-15 names per post.
  16. I guess I'm the only one who thinks this is blatant trolling?
  17. That, and also I believe the style of play will be different from traditional MMORPG's in the sense that it doesn't require as much grinding and levelling up. It's supposed to cater to people with less time for that, I think.
  18. You know what else is useless? Gp. You can't do anything with them, it kind of sucks.
  19. Coming from someone who played solely during when runescape had a free market, your question surprises me. You're asking the wrong question. It's not, 'are merchanting clans legal?' - It's 'are merchanting clans legitimate?' Jagex has convinced its players that economic plasticity isn't allowed. We used to have a free market where you could do anything you want. Now jagex has complete control over prices and the economy. And this has caused this shift of larger scale merchanting because old ways no longer work with universal set prices. Yes these clans are legal, but that doesn't mean you can trust the leadership. Start a clan of your own based off the right principles and if people feel it is genuine and run the right way, run in a better way than the other clans, open, and transparent, it will be big. It sounds like thats what people are wanting, but these groups always get corrupt (inevitably?). That's what I would do at least, if I were you. I had a merchanting clan back in like '05 with Duke Freedom but conditions were completely different where a few people wouldn't have the type of control they do today. Just find something that works for you, or make it happen yourself. Trust me, if you have a vision, your voice will be louder than you think.
  20. It's possible for every rock he gets to it before you. Then he basically gets one free dice roll before you even get there. If he gets .50 of all rocks, that initial roll he gets by himself makes a big difference. Also, if it's anywhere near being analagous to lower level ores, the level shouldn't make a difference. If you're 70 mining, you're going to almost always first click get a low level ore. A level 99 will also get first click. Level makes no difference in this case, just connection speed. The level 99 is higher than the 70 but I don't believe the system works by competing the two miners against each other. The first to click gets it.
  21. Keep your eye on pink(purple)...I'm expected a long awaited for comeback. I wish I had some insightful economic analysis like I used to love posting about when I followed the market. My party hats have been gathering dust for years, and it's gotten to the point where since I don't play I have no reason to sell them, so as much as I never would have thought I'd say it, I could care less where the prices go. That being said, it's always fun to do a quick addup on the net worth for old time's sake.
  22. Twitter is great because it insists upon itself. Nobody really legitimately likes it that much, but it's become a web standard for sites/companies/people. Just like on facebook when the twitteresque update was made, people didn't like it. But do it anyways guys, any publicity is good publicity.
  23. I haven't kept in touch with too many things Runescape lately, but as I log on I saw this post and was pretty intrigued. Duke Freedom and I started a merchanting clan a few years ago but back then there wasn't really much of an interest for one and after a year or so we decided to disband it. What I'm wondering is how and when these clans came to be, and how is the game different now that it's more conducive to these clans? I can guess that because of the economic restrictions in order to manipulate the market now you have to instead do it on a larger scale? Can anyone give me a brief history of how these clans came to be?
  24. I'm not understanding something. You guys are talking like she has the option to euthanize it. While it's true the baby has no functioning upper brain, does that not make it a human? I don't think what you guys are talking about is legal since she did give birth to it. The choice has already been made, hasn't it? Are you seriously telling us that a person with Down's Syndrome doesn't know they exist? Bull. Indeed. Just read my posts like two pages ago.... Those who are mentally [developmentally delayed] are aware that they are alive. They are just less intelligent. There are varying degrees, sure, but they are aware that they are alive and are capable of enjoying life. A baby with anencephaly has no brain. It has a brain stem. In other words, it acts COMPLETELY instinctually. The brain stem is responsible for unconscious bodily processes. There is no baby there, just a husk of what could have been a baby. Comparing it to a goldfish might even be giving it too much. An ant would be more like it. Someone is intelligent. And you must remember, you are talking to a scientist who bases all his "opinions" and "views" on logic and reasoning, rather than religion and culture. For example, shaking hands, kissing on the cheek and bowing are three distinct types of greetings in different human cultures. I favor none of them and think none is less correct than the others, because scientifically there is no reason to. So I simply use each one depending on who I am interacting with, in order to please the people I interact with. If I were given control of the world and was allowed to choose which type of greeting must be used by all people, I would determine, using logic and reasoning, which was the best choice, instead of picking my favorite, which would be impossible anyways since I do not have one. We don't have enough scientists in the world. :( But when dealing with a life or death moral judgment, you can't only use science. You can use it to provide the facts, but the facts can only go so far when making such a decision.
