Today...
Well, that's weird. Nick, you chose a good part of Sam's quote for that topic. Yet when I was reading Lent's post, "Those were the stories that stayed with you...Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going" came to mind. And although they're basically part of the same quote, they don't have much to do with each other. Straaaaaaange. I consider myself pretty very anti-social/shy, but I don't think I place myself higher up than everyone else. Sure, I won't say I'm an idiot, and I like to claim that I'm smarter than the average person I know at school (except I can't figure out this [bleep]ing chem problem), but most of them are happy. I'm happy too. We just have different values, and we achieve happiness and success in different ways. You don't necessarily have to be socially successful to be "successful in life," but most people like to go down that path. Not like there's a concrete definition of success, or that we all prioritize success or anything...

Today...
My parents (and my sister) are out of the house, so yep, just me at home. All the lights are off (except in my room), but little kids keep coming to my door. <_< I'm draining them out with Night Castle, the newest TSO album. Got it today. ;) It mentions Confucius. And of course the music is awesome. I'm going to go to a friend's house later. And it's the end of Daylight Savings, so an extra hour of sleep tonight. Good stuff.

I definitely agree that we shouldn't be able to prance around with our armies and claim land that way. But I'm kind of unsure about the monsters thing. Maybe let people take a few (or a lot of) squares after their first one without any fighting (though have it take a while), and then have the monsters after that.. I support Paul's trade suggestion, by the way. And I don't think buildings should have a fixed amount of construction time. Just give guidelines and let people pick as long as it's reasonable.

Didn't they also have guns? So at this point I got the .5 research points I need for copper tools. Now I'm researching copper weapons. A mine has been found in the hills northwest of my city, and mining has started. I might be thinking too far ahead, but when do we get to expand to other tiles?

And even if you were to use your own tech tree, it should be approved first. Otherwise you could easily godmod and research 3 techs in a year (just like you just did). And I'm sure most of the techs you want are already in there in some form or another. Doom also said the tech tree wasn't done. So make suggestions if you want some other techs.

Oh, that's a good idea, listing out the effects of the techs you've researched. And I might use circling in the future, filling in the block doesn't look that great unless I spend some time on it. So apparently I have: -Increased crop yield around sources of fresh water -Ability to use the same fields over multiple years -25% increase for farming -Ability to build farmsteads/ranches -Improved yields of livestock -Ability to make things with copper (apparently not tools, weapons, or armor though...) -Ability to build civilian infrastructure And okay, I have 200 horses. If that's more than average, I think it's still reasonable considering horses are a central part of my society. That means I have 100 Light Cavalry (Archers), and 100 Archers. I only have bows because I can't build with copper yet. :( (or do I have clubmen? :P )

Here we go. [hide=General Information (Stuff for First Post?)] [hide=History of the Huns]After the fall of the Hunnic Empire (the one for which Attila is famous for), the Huns were largely dispersed and broke all bonds of fellowship. However, years later, from the ashes a fire has been woken, from the shadows a light has sprung. The crownless once more are king. The Hunnic Empire was reborn. The culture is largely the same, with horses being a central part of society, being treated by Huns as brethren. The army is renowned for their skill in mounted warfare, especially mounted archery. They are capable of hand-to-hand combat though. The Huns are still a relatively nomadic people, but they have established a few minor cities, and have begun to learn in the ways of building fortifications. Agriculture, especially animal husbandry, is the primary industry. Equality, freedom and education are highly valued in Hunnic society. [/hide] There aren't any real major Hunnic cities for me to name my cities after, so I'll steal names from Lord of the Rings (more specifically Rohan, since there are some similarities) for now. [hide=Capital (Edoras)] [/hide] [hide=Updated World] [/hide] [hide=Techs]Agriculture -Irrigation (2) -Crop Rotation (2) -Animal Husbandry (4) -Basic Fertilizers (4) -Farmsteads/Ranches (5) Metal Working -Copper Working (2) Basic Construction -Civilian Specialization (2) [hide=Tree (My Researched Techs][/hide]Next tech(s): -Copper Weapons (0/.5) -Copper Tools (0/.5) [/hide] [hide=Unit Roster (Incomplete?)] [hide=Light Cavalry (Swords/Pikes)]Typical light cavalry units. Fast and powerful on offense. Useless on defense. OS - 10 DS - 1 RNG - 1 MS - 6 [/hide] [hide=Light Cavalry (Archers)]The backbone of the Hunnic army. Extremely fast (I would've maxed it out but that probably would've been too unfair), efficient for hit-and-run tactics. Capable of doing a lot of damage, as long as they can evade enemy fire. Not very useful for defense, however. OS - 12 DS - 1 RNG - 1-5 MS - 8 [/hide] [hide=Infantry (Swords/Pikes)]Infantry with light armor. Mainly used for defense. OS - 3 DS - 4 RNG - 1 MS - 2[/hide] [hide=Archers]Archers with very little armor, allowing them to move quickly. Main unit for defending cities and forts. OS - 2 DS - 6 RNG - 1-4 MS - 3[/hide] [/hide][/hide] So we're doing unique techs? Trading system sounds fine. Dunno about my current army size. About how many horses do I start with? 100-150 (200 is stretching it?) sound fair? I probably forgot/missed something.

Sorry for the lack of updates/activity, I've been rather busy/sick but I should have time this weekend to at least post my initial stuff. How are we going to do resource distribution? I see that some of the techs (like copper working) need a specific resource. Are we going to assume that we all have the basic resources, or do we get to pick one or two?

Survey regarding school and computers
Math isn't fun.  I ranted on more than I probably should have. Oh well. And if anyone cares, I think I spend more time playing games on my calculator than actually doing math...

Survey regarding school and computers
I think at least through middle school, all subjects should be taught. Sitting in those classes is often what tells people what they're interested in. My middle school also had some random classes we had to take, like art and tech ed, which also help people explore their options. My high school has only a 2 year math requirement, so maybe I don't see this as as big a problem as some of you do. Sure, I'm going to take math all 4 years (or maybe just 3 since I might not have anything to take as a senior... ), but if someone's made up their mind as a junior that they want to pursue a career in something that involves very little math, then they can probably simply not take math if they don't wish to. Though I think just about every science career involves some sort of "advanced" math. And in today's world, there are a lot of those. (and tons of other careers do too) Math classes really should be about the the concepts, rather than the execution. Though honing quick arithmetic couldn't hurt. I couldn't care less whether someone does something with a calculator as opposed to in their head or with pen/paper. What does matter more (if they're an engineer or something, I dunno) is whether someone knows how to find the angles of a triangle when given two sides. What does matter is whether someone can add up prices quickly. I know there are some absolutely useless concepts (proofs might fall under here, although for curious people who want to know why things work, it wouldn't), but looking beyond those things, I think I've learned a lot more useful stuff than useless in the time I've spent learning math. Maybe the math curriculum where I am just doesn't suck. And did I mention that math can be fun? Yes, I know I'm a nerd, but it's...fun. And apparently it's good for your brain or something. Cool. Also, my pre-calc class is getting along pretty well with very little usage of calculators. My teacher is really young too, so he's not one of those old guys who thinks calculators are evil. He grew up in an age of calculators himself. On another note, my calculator just ran out of batteries. Damn it. <_<

After a day of indecisiveness and typing up posts before deleting them, I've finally decided to be the Huns, more or less. I'll probably drag in some traits of other civilizations (Norse or Anglo-Saxon, most likely), but yea, Huns. Fun. I'll type up the history and description, make my capital, and post a unit roster later.

Race
Asian to the core (hurr hardcore Asian), Taiwanese + Cantonese to be more specific. Han Chinese if you're looking for that. Though my mom's side (the Taiwanese side) was already on Taiwan before the mass migration in 1949.

Or if people want, barbarians could probably work just as well. Since we're basically moving completely away from actual history, I'll probably merge a few cultures. Sounds fun. The battle system is alright, the only thing I could clearly think of was what rocco said. Maybe also use arrows to show troop movement, though that might overcomplicate things.

That's true, but without tech development (?), things like that probably won't happen. And grim, clarify? Or were you talking to Mather...? (I'm talking about the second half, I might just take northern China if I end up staying there)

Sere already claimed them like 3 times. (ninja'd by grim...) North/South American isn't even a culture, so I have no clue where that idea even came from. There are also the Mayans if anyone wants to make doomsday predictions. I'm considering abandoning China, I'm starting to like the idea of the Polynesians, Huns or Celts. And if people complain about resource distribution being unfair, that's how it went down in real life...You just have to work what you have to your advantage. Oh, and I believe a key point of the new war system is that tactics will be just as important, if not more, than what units you have.

We're not using a fictional map. we're using the real world map but someone needs to get rid of the borders first. [hide=][/hide] Well that was hard.

Today...
Kind of funny how the "home" of hockey has the worst team so far, eh? Bruins won today though so I'm happy. :P My sister was going to come home today from college, but it's raining hard so she decide not to. Meh. And I've had a humidifier on in my room for a few hours and it still feels kind of dry...

Real life help & advice
Probably when there's the least amount of moonlight. So it'd be best on a night with a new moon, though assuming you mean time as in hours, I'd guess shortly after sunset or shortly before sunrise. If there's light pollution though, when almost everyone is sleeping and most lights are off would be best. Don't trust me on this.

Magic could be cool and shake things up a bit, but despite what limitations might be placed, people will probably still find a way to abuse it. So "no" from me as well.

China actually wasn't very united at that time either, so...maybe. Let's wait until the thread is actually up, to be honest. And it won't be up until the Fally Tavern is up, I think? (I never actually commented on what I thought of that - I don't mind too much, but it'd just mean an extra tab I keep open 24/7)

Hegemony-V2 begins page 302
We'll be mostly disregarding that sort of thing. We're going to act like none of these empires actually existed, right? Just the nationalities/cultures. No borders yet. I haven't decided who I want to be yet, but if no one minds (grim?), I'd like to place a claim for part of southeastern China. That would be the Southern Song dynasty in 450 AD, with the people perhaps labeled as Cantonese and Fujianese. Though I kind of think playing as a barbarian tribe would be cool.

Wait, so are we claiming empires or pieces of land?

Food
My mom made Japanese food today - sushi and miso soup. [bleep] YES. And I'm the only one home (other than her), so a good portion of it is mine.

Grim, I'm pretty sure we're not claiming civilizations, only land. So if we're only having 10K-100K people each, you can't claim all of China. Thus your original claim doesn't really count. I'm sure if we need to though, we can be close neighbors or something. Not like we've actually decided on anything... And we can set the day:year ratio so we go slow enough to still be in the (late) medieval ages after 100+ days.
