Does anyone still play text-based MMORPGs?

I was just wondering if anyone still plays them... I'm kind of developing my own text-based MMORPG as something to do in my spare time (because I've always wanted to put my knowledge of PHP to better use than just making a news script for my website)...

My game is almost ready for a public beta test, but I'm wondering if I should still continue developing it, because it might not be worth it if nobody would want to play.

In case anyone's wondering, gameplay will be similar to OGame (if you've ever played that) except players will be get to run their own medieval fantasy cities, build up armies, fight other cities, etc...

Reply back if you play text-based MMORPGs (or if you don't and still want to chat) and why :) .

DragonMud (mud: multi-user-dungeon) I played that as a kid when I barely knew anything about computers (no graphical user interface either back then). That game probably doesn't exist anymore. Pure text based RPG.

Slightly OT..

I was reading a book on the history of video games recently and it inspired me to get out the old emu with Zork I on it.. what a perfect game, if you added a graphical front-end to it and extended the map a helluva lot, you'd have an RPG every bit as comparable to a new game of the same genre.

Pssst, they're called MUDs

No, as someone pointed out that would be a multi-user-dungeon. A too narrow definition of a text-based MMORPG.

Playing Travian and Arenascape right now.

Ditto, your game sounds like travian, go to travian.com if you want some inspiration (it's a great game aswell)

Multi User Dimension, Multi User Dungeon, Multi User Domain, aka MMORPG (massive multiplayer online roleplaying game) but on a smaller scale. Usually textbased although a few have graphics and/or sounds. Many MUDs have built in themes.

UD pwns your soul. :P

Besides, IronRealms is basically the God of "text-based MMORPG"s, and they call their games MUDs. So more proof there.

  • 1 month later...

I used to play a lot of web-browser games before I found Runescape.

My favourite one (and probably the only game I was actually good at) was called Dragon Soldier. I doubt it exists now.

No longer playing Runescape, I caught the WoW bug.
