"No begging" as one of runescape rules, good idea or not?

Featured Replies

A level 37 kept following him asking for money(My friends was wearing full dragon). He kindly said no. The 37's reply? "Well I'll just keep following you and asking until you do." So he followed. And he repeatedly said "money please money please money please money please " .

that goes under Harrassment http://www.runescape.com/kbase/viewarticle.ws?article_id=2481 and chat flooding (rule 1)

I'm not gunna try to persuade you guys to take it off. It would be pretty pointless to have a cape you never wear. But what you do have to understand is, depending on which cape you have, they are mostly for showing off, especially the quest cape, so you have to expect comments about it. It would be like an actor trying to bring up a movie he was in during a conversation, then getting mad when asked for autographs. That's why when I wear my quest cape, I am usually willing to take the time to do my emote if asked, I am asking for it by wearing it.

That's a HORRIBLE analogy, at least until you tell us where to get a +9 all defense +4 prayer cape for 99k elsewhere... the quest cape doesn't have the pray bonus but it's still cheaper than the obby cape, so in my opinion that makes the obby cape the vanity cape between those two.

I just love when people quote half of what I say....

After that point, I did say that if you are actually wearing the cape for it's bonuses, then yes, it is annoying, and to just say you're busy and ignore the person if requests continue (or something like that). But I don't think someone standing in a bank trading or something really needs that extra 9 defense and 4 prayer. If I am out fighting something, and need those bonuses, then you'd better bet I'm not gunna turn my back on an enemy to do my emote for you.

Look, if your mom still drops you off at school, you ain't gangsta, pull up your damn pants!

Happy? I quoted your whole post this time-- A good thing for everyone too dim to SCROLL UP to read the original in full... anyways, your lame attempt to pretend that "for it's[sic] bonuses" is equivalent to "However, I can see it being a bit annoying if you are actually using that level 100 stat, like in cooking on something. Just tell them you are busy at the moment, and then ignore them. " isn't going to fly. You specifically limited it to the 100 stat bonus and then gave an example of the same.

Having to take off my cape to avoid being asked for emotes is as annoying a prospect as the requests themselves. Just give it up.

It would be impossible to actualy uphold the rule. Too many things can be taken out of context.

Plus does the game honestly need another rule that will take away resources from the important stuff?

Now folks, there is one thing you are all missing. RS is a ROLE Player Game. If someone really wants to play the role of a beggar, then it is not right that anyone should stop them. Just so long as they do not break Jagex's rules on harrassment or spamming.

Lets face it IRL there are some people who use begging as a "profession", and sadly manage to make a living out of it. So why not people in RS.

Perhaps Jagex should add a "Begging" skill

I gotta agree here. The last thing we need is a stupid rule like no begging. I'd much rather see the game improve content wise for everyone, instead of make a rule that only affects the few scumbags that beg. People will eventually stop begging and if they don't maybe sometime in the future Jagex should add such a rule.

Just like real life, there is no law about "begging" but it could be something more along the lines of soliciting.

Perhaps Jagex should add a "Begging" skill

begging won't end. as long as there are newbs looking for money then there will always be beggars. the community is not going to improve, just get worse. and beggars will become more common.

and the poroblem is, even if the rule was put into action, to many people would mistake asking favours, for begging. For the same reason as above- the community is getting worse. NOT better.

Perhaps Jagex should add a "Begging" skill

Matt: You want that eh? You want everything good for you. You want everything that's--falls off garbage can

Camera guy: Whoa, haha, are you okay dude?

Matt: You want anything funny that happens, don't you?

Camera guy: still laughing

Matt: You want the funny shit that happens here and there, you think it comes out of your [bleep]ing [wagon] pushes garbage can down, don't you? You think it's funny? It comes out of here! running towards Camera guy

Camera guy: runs away still laughing

Matt: You think the funny comes out of your mother[bleep]ing creativity? Comes out of Satan, mother[bleep]er! nn--ngh! pushes Camera guy down

Camera guy: Hoooholy [bleep]!

Matt: FUNNY ISN'T REAL! FUNNY ISN'T REAL!

Well, first of all, you would get little report happy wannabe mods that decide to report you for every little thing you ask, like borrowing an antipoison when you are in the middle of nowhere with 6 hp left.

Second, there would be a very fine line between what is begging, and what is simply asking for a small favor. I'm more than happy to give out extra food, or antipoisons, or smith some steel for a newer player, or go a few minutes out of my way to lead someone to Al Kharid on my trip from Dranor to Varrock. The other day I was walking around in f2p, and someone was walking around very politely asking "Excuse me. Can I ask you a question? Do you have any extra runes I can have? I need fire and mind." When he was told no, he'd say "ok, sorry for taking your time", and go on to the next person. I gave him 3k fire runes, and showed him where to start rune mysteries, telling him he could make his own minds in no time. Yet I'm sure other people would consider some of that begging.

It's really not that big of a deal. If you won't help you out, just say no, ignore them and go on with what you are doing. It's not like it actually interferes with your game play. I don't even waste time adding them to my ignore list.

ya its like the Karamja fishers and fire...

Each 1 minute passed more 2 people asks for fire

thats not begging...that is just asking for a favor

And since when do people read everything regarding a rule carefully before they report? They will just see "Begging" on the Report Screen and spam it.

And they get a warning for misuse of the report feature.

Everyones happy! \'

Well, except the trigger happy reporter, and Jadex staff for the extra work...

There is no perfect solution, I guess. :|

but that's the best one \'

That's were salary comes in. now, the jagex staff problem is cleared away. And wh would we want to make the trigger-happy reporter happy? they're rulebreakers after all.

I disagree, begging shouldn't be agansit the rules just because it annoys you. Furthermore there is nothing wrong with begging, its just slightly lazy and unethical. Eventully these beggers will either be weeded out of runescape, or change and become more mature.

Why would it only annoy me? Thousands of high lvls who have been begged out there would probably feel the same way as me. If the higher lvls are feeling kind and generous, they will help some lower lvls without the lower lvls asking to be helped, so begging is almost the same as asking even if you know you have high chances to be ignored. It looks like beggars aren't being taken out of the game anytime now. The previously beggars will stop begging, but new beggars would come in to take their place.

Strangely with WotLK so near, I wished I could delay it a bit to push through that last TBC content in MH/BT :'(.

beggars are so annoying they can follow you like an 1 hour and then you gonna tele or something like that it should be forbidden!!!!

Your post looks too opinion based and I don't think it qualifies as a good post in this forum. You should really read the rules of this forum before coming here. :shame:

Begging is harmless, unless the person doing it follows you (eg. "I'm going to follow you around and annoy you until you give me 5k"). Then it's a reportable offence, harassment, reported under offensive language.

"If you have nothing constructive to say, don't say anything at all."

I can see the benfits from a 'No Begging' rule, but I can also see it being open to abuse. Also, how do you judge whether someone is begging? It's a question that doesn't really have one answer.

My perosnal solution would be a 'No-Follow' option, where a player has the ability to cut off anyone that's trying to follow him/her. That way, when used in conjuction with the Ignore List, beggars wouldn't be able to, well... beg.

We have enough wanna be do gooders no? who ever said ignore, +1, i mean its not that hard to hit a button, don't need to add a whole new excuse for ppl to spam the reports, then the mods wont have time to read the importnat stuff... like MACROING GOLD FARMERS!

Nah, begging by that definition shouldn't be reportable.

Firstly, it would overload Jagex as mentioned before.

Secondly, I like to beg back  (fr33 st00f pl0x, beggar. PL0x!1).

Thirdly, it does not really cause any real harm.

I guess if it gets like spammy or vulgar, then yeah, report them.

You can expand the rule to repeated begging. FOr example:

him: can i have some money?

Me: no

HIm: plz?

Me: no, you should work for money instead of asking for them.

HIM: plz plz plz plz plz plz

Me: work for me then, get me cow hides

Him: ok but give me 100k first

and he follows you around and around

that should be reportable

My issue with this is deciphering genuine cases and actually beggars. We can't shun someone because they are asking for help. This is what I do when someone attempts to beg off me.

I am A, the beggar is B

B Hey can I have some money?

A Not really

B Aww come on I got hacked (the most common excusse! lol)

A I'll tell you what I'll give you something worth more that money, my time and advice. I'll show you my trade.

This is when you find out whether they are genuine or not-

So a beggar would go

B- Omg you noob I bet you don't have any money.

And a Genuine person would say.

B- Ok thanks I really appreciate it!

I may well give this person a job if I think they are a competent worker.

You then get a worthwhile feeling inside and you've helped someone. I agree with the forum's creator in that expecting other people to give you things is completely unacceptable, but next time someone asks you for money or advice don't just ignore them, spend some time finding out whether they are legitimate or not. You could be in their shoes one day.

Thanks for reading my post.

Oh and advice for beggars, who are willing to learn not just after the money. If you sound mature, sensible and respectful people will see you as more genuine and more willing to help you.

wow, wow! I've found the meaning of life!

Oh oh it's gone again.

It's my personal opinion that Jagex should make a rule against begging, clearly state that it's only to be used when the begger persistantly asks you over and over/insults you, and then decide on a case to case basis on whether the begger in question should be punished or not.
