"No begging" as one of runescape rules, good idea or not?

Featured Replies

I strongly support making "continous begging" an offence. Really, they're wasting their time and drivng urself mad. This is really something that we should do and Jagex should implant

For me, I won't make requesting for items, like some food or anti-poison pots when someone is close to death, if he's not asking repeatedly and make you feel annoyed

For those naggy [cabbage] noobs, I'd put them on ignore list and change server (I'm f2p) if they continue following me. For p2ps, get urself an amulet of glory / ectophial / whatever and teleport away. Or simply log out after adding them to ignore list

Sure, Jagex may not make this to reportable offence as we've already got the ignore list. (You know, kids perfer games with less rules to abide) If so, why don't we fully utilize the blacklist and kick those [cabbage] away from you by yourself?

What you should never do is to give them what they want (like gp/fishes/runes or whatever) if they're doing that in an impolite way and make others feel ignored. They should pay for their rudeness. If you give them what they beg for, they will continue doing so, which will definitely do more harm than good in long run.

Second, there would be a very fine line between what is begging, and what is simply asking for a small favor. I'm more than happy to give out extra food, or antipoisons, or smith some steel for a newer player, or go a few minutes out of my way to lead someone to Al Kharid on my trip from Dranor to Varrock. The other day I was walking around in f2p, and someone was walking around very politely asking "Excuse me. Can I ask you a question? Do you have any extra runes I can have? I need fire and mind." When he was told no, he'd say "ok, sorry for taking your time", and go on to the next person. I gave him 3k fire runes, and showed him where to start rune mysteries, telling him he could make his own minds in no time. Yet I'm sure other people would consider some of that begging.

You do realize that they look at what has been said over the past minute right? One of my best friends has two 99 skill capes and a quest cape. We try holding a conversation and we get bombarded by at least four people asking for his emote. Turn off chat you say? That doesn't make them stop following you. How about when I was fishing and he came over to keep me company? A level 37 kept following him asking for money(My friends was wearing full dragon). He kindly said no. The 37's reply? "Well I'll just keep following you and asking until you do." So he followed. And he repeatedly said "money please money please money please money please " THAT is begging not asking for one thing and then leaving with a no. The only people who would consider being polite begging are the ones who are immature, shouldn't be playing the game due to age, and are soon to be banned due to false reporting.

First of all I'm not clear on what you mean in the underlined part. Polite begging?

Second of all, that's harassment, and I believe it's reportable (rule 1, but a double check can't hurt). The small cases of begging is like someone calling someone a noob. It's not enough to get you reported, it's only when the person is insisting to the extreme, just like bombarding them with offensive insults. I get a lot of "do the emote", when I don't want to answer I get all kinds of responses but none of them are serious, they will give up after a while. That is harassment but not severe. Usually you report someone when they are harming you (for rule 1 at least).

He was saying that the people who would consider politely asking for favors as begging are immature people who shouldn't be playing. The problem is, they are playing, and in high numbers apparently.

Yeah, and even though my highest skill is combat, lvl 60, i have had 3 people following me at once all asking for my full rune, rune 2h, and strength amulet. I think the reason for all of this is that either these people dont pay attention on turital island and forget how to do all the skills, or they just like wasting everybodys time. I think there should be an offence called continuous begging, if they beg for 5 straight posts after you tell them no.

Begging as been apart of RS since i can remember, taking it out of the game will take out a bit of it's history, yes it's annoying but it's not like you've not ever begged for something.

The insistent beggars in Runescape do bother me. But making it a reportable offense? I think that would do more harm than good. Like others have said, making it a reportable offense would draw in more report-happy wannabe P Mods who report every other person they can just to get a silver crown by their name. I also think that making it reportable wouldn't do much since just like with every other rule there are people that will ignore them. And also if Jagex were to add the rule to the game they most likely would only post it in the Knowledge Base like they did with the rule about not asking for bf/gfs. Because of this I still see people doing that and when I tell them that it's reportable they don't believe me because more often than not they've never even opened the KB once.

Pirate Rosetta stone. Learn a language while you scape.

Sounds interesting, but these days how many people really speak Pirate?

Only if they persist even after they are told "no"

However, simply standing in lummy for hours saying "free stuff plz" should be reportable.

Also, they should have guidelines. If someone wants a simple rune or 10 gp to get by Alkahrid gate, they shouldn't be reported. Basically, the only reportable "begging" will be:

Persistence, even after being told off (aka, following someone arround annoying them)

Standing in a crowded area taking any free items.

What should be allowed is:

Asking for a simple item, such as a rune, potions etc.

Asking for a little money to get by a tollboth etc.

madmax_410.png

madmax_410.png

techinicaly, begging can be considered item scamming, as most are accounts made by other players to try to mooch free stuff off players, then they continue to beg until they feel they've earned enough, and transfer it to their main. I know, because one begging noob drop traded in the bank where he was begging, and i got a couple of k's of him too ::'

and also, if they say "fr33 st00f" enough times that it gets extremly repetitive, then they are flooding the chat screen, which i think is reportable under rule 1

No, runescape already has enough rules as it is, its becoming to look like a dictatorship. Low lvls can beg, they still have it hard off then the high lvls (one acception is people like zezima who can't turn their public chat on without lagging out). If you don't like it then you can hopefully say respectfully "no" or otherwise add them to your ignore list.

No, runescape already has enough rules as it is, its becoming to look like a dictatorship.

I agree, plus its a fair argument that they don't have enough resources to actively enforce the rules that are already in place.

Whilst I'd accept there is always going to be some element of anti-social begging in this game (see footnote), people should feel empowered that there is more to this game than standing around persistently typing "Free stuff pl0x" or similar. Even if its killing cows for there hides there making a valid effort to improving there combat level, albiet very slowly and having a viable commodity to sell on either P2P or F2P.

Don't get me wrong here though, if you find begging in its many different forms fun, kudos to you, but just don't expect the rest of the world as it passes you by to play ball.

As for beggars that persistently target and abuse specific player types say for example, high combat levels, skill cape wearers, etc they can be reported under Rule 1 and dealt with accordingly, perm mute etc.

Why cant they even come up with something more original?

Someone asking "Spare some change, guvnor?" will possibly stand a greater chance** at me giving up some gp than the chat box flooder that just gets put on ignore.

Anti Social Begging

By this I basically mean those that think by using 'leetspeak' or by being generally disrespectful/bullying to the community, they're going to get rewarded for their behaviour.

**Chance of current begging styles working on me fit in the 'slim to none' category.

We have enough wanna be do gooders no? who ever said ignore, +1, i mean its not that hard to hit a button, don't need to add a whole new excuse for ppl to spam the reports, then the mods wont have time to read the importnat stuff... like MACROING GOLD FARMERS!

Due to the fact that many humans can only see what's directly effecting them, the see beggars to be more annoying/ disruptful than gold farmers. The reason that macroers are reported is because those reporters probably have the idea that the macroers are hindering their (the reporter's) skilling/ earning.

I don't mind showing off my emote, but i hate beggars. I dotn think it should be reportable though, because jagex would have too much trouble dealing with it! 1/4 of f2p, would be banned probably, so about 2 million

people?

I dont beleive it should be a rule, you can choose to ignore the annoying beggers.

I agree with what has been said. It's hard to draw the line between begging and asking.

The ignore list is a much easier answer to this problem. Whenever I am faced with this in the game I always put them on my iggy list. If they want to waste their time by following me around and shouting at me when I cannot hear them that is their business. 8-)
One good reason why a rule against begging is unnecessary. And do you think Jagex wants to listen to a million reports about people begging for money, items, etc? I don't think so. They have way too much on their hands already, and making this rule is not needed and is a waste of time. And Jagex would also have to set standards as to what begging is and what politely asking is. Overall is a rule that this community does not need nor have time for to deal with. Jagex gave you an ignore button; use it.

If there was a no-begging rule i would have been banned several times over, I normally do it to mess around with friends and well..if this rule was implemented then many innocent people would probably get black marks without actually begging as a source of income.

They made the ignore list for a reason, use it.
