11 May 2007 - Bots and Real-World Trading Update

Featured Replies

In a follow up to last week's news post, we thought we'd let you know exactly what we've been doing in order to remove those who cheat from the game.

Firstly, we've been upgrading our detection software to ban the bots from the game. We've also been particularly focusing on cleaning up the members' version of the game. Bots on the members game are banned significantly more quickly. Of course, the free version has seen a fair share of bans, too.

The Investigations in the Community Unit (ICU) have worked hard, double checked all the facts to make sure we're only getting the cheats, and then have banned 19075 accounts for breaking Rule 7.

We've made significant progress over the last week, but there's still lots more for us to do yet.

Secondly, and equally importantly, as we warned last week we are now banning people who are BUYING RuneScape gold for real-world money - those people who are funding the whole problem in the first place. In the last week we have banned 2300 accounts for breaking Rule 12 by buying RuneScape gold.

Clearly a lot of people buying gold thought they would get away with it, so were quite surprised when they actually got permanently banned. This goes to show that we really do mean it when we say that buying gold for real-world money = permanent ban. We have reliable ways to trace this now. (These are NOT people lending items to their friends, we really are sure they were genuinely buying gold for real world money.)

Note: These weren't bots, these were players who built up their account, sometimes over years, but then threw it all away by cheating and buying gold for real-world money. This means that all the time and money they spent on their account was wasted ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Ãâ and all because they wanted to get ahead of others by using unfair means and tactics.

Have a look at the following examples of accounts banned for real-world trading activities in the past week and decide whether you think it would be worth risking your account. You won't get a warning - you'll just find your account banned, and that will be that.

These are just 2 examples out of the 2300 total.

Player X

Total Level: Over 1600

Total time in-game: 140 days, 8 hours

Status: Permanently banned for real-world trading

Player Y

Total Level: Over 1550

Total time in-game: 89 days, 14 hours

Status: Permanently banned for real-world trading

A pretty silly thing for them to go and do, I'm sure you'll agree. Don't make the same mistake.

To sum this up :

The less players buy gold. The less autoers there are.

Lol at the abbreviation ICU (intensive care unit in hospitals). Meh they are never ever going to stop bots and real world traders, good of them to put the effort in though.

Edit:spelt care as car lol :wall:

Let the whining of false banning begin!

Would be nice if there was a way of finding out the date you created your account.

If they automaticly ban anybody they are sure bought cash online, we can be sure there will be a decrease in buyers (Even if some manage to get away, others are caught and less and less want to take risks), which means gold farms making less money of Runescape and that go make there money elsewhere.. (Like WoW :XD:)

You know I could just spew up facts like that out of whim too? Those figures are so exaggarated. And those two examples...what exactly do they prove? It could be all fabricated.

I don't really see any difference in the number of autoers. I mean they say they have banned 19,000 is that alot? Or probably just a splinter of the amount of autoers out there. Atleast they say they have a long way to go so they seem to be taking it more seriously finally, we've had the problem of autoers for years afterall.

At least they are trying to start solving this problem. I despise autoers. RuneScape reached 1,000,000 members the other day right? What fraction of those are autoers? Who knows.

And real-world item trading is horrible too. First of all, it's just stupid.I have seen tons of sites selling items and gold for cash at outrageous prices. Who in their right mind would pay that much money for some stupid pixels?I saw a Third Age Plate on sale for $1,000 on one site. That is the stupidest idea ever. Second of all, it could screw up the economy even worse than it already is.

Third of all, it's HELPING AUTOERS, which is possibly the worst part.

the day the fantastic four come into runescape, i will eat my socks.

what kind of topic is this. ihaven't read it yet

but i now it must be stupid.

I have seen action on one of the F2P worlds. I came accross at least 20 macroers/autoers at one yew tree between Lumbridge and Draynor. I reported one. Kept killing goblins and watching. Random events started less than 5 minutes later. 20 to 25 minutes later the only people left at the tree were the two that actually responded to the random events.

The second time I logged in today, I just happened to log into the middle of a real world item trading conversation. People who do that shouldn't do it near Lumbridge where they are likely to be observed.

You focuss on the bad side of the news, they are now starting to ban alot of gold buyers, those that funds the autoers. If the autoers start making less cash of the game, they will auto less (They're a business after all).

funny because..jagex "hires" people for there "unit" to go to cheating communites and ban accounts..

I find it hilarious that they are in breach of all the cheating websites privacy agreement.

thanks Bill clinton.

You're an idiot.

british or not. Cheating communities often have a privacy agreement that states before you enter the page, you need to agree that you are not Jage staff or are affiliated with them in anyway.

and bubsa. maybe state your explanation on "why I am an idiot" before pressing that button below the options bar that says "submit". I Don't care who you are, post properly.
