Harry Potter Theme Park Headed to Fla.

Universal Studios is opening up a Harry Potter theme park in Florida complete with the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the Forbidden Forest and Hogsmeade village.

"The Wizarding World of Harry Potter," will open in late 2009 in Orlando, officials said Thursday.

"The plans I've seen look incredibly exciting, and I don't think fans of the books or films will be disappointed," said author J.K. Rowling, who has been working with a creative team to make sure the park resembles the books and films.

More than a dozen artists and designers lead by Stuart Craig, the production designer of the movies, have set up house in the studio where the movies are being filmed to make sure every detail is considered, according to Scott Trowbridge of Universal.

"We're really going to the people who know this world best to ensure that level of authenticity," he said.

The Potter park will allow visitors to view the iconic locations in Rowling's magical world, like Dumbledore's office in Hogwarts and the shops in Hogsmeade. Some locations may be in upcoming books, Trowbridge said.

Trowbridge said while there would not be any character lookalikes at the park, fans wanting to see Harry Potter and his magical friends wouldn't leave disappointed.

"This is Harry's world," said Trowbridge. "Most every fan wants to have an encounter with the star of the show."

The Harry Potter book series has been translated into 65 languages with more than 325 million copies sold in over 200 territories around the world.

The fifth film in the series, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," will be released in theatres on 13 July. The seventh and final book of the series will be released on 21 July.

Welllllll....I think it's a great idea. I mean, Harry Potter? Coming to life? It says Hogsmeade will be remade, along with the Forbidden Forest and Hogwarts. And to finally see them come to life is awesome. Especially when J.K. Rowling is designing it so it looks EXACTLY alike. I like the idea, and I'm going there opening day! But that won't come for a couple of years.

Anyway, I wanted to hear some fellow Tip.iter's opinions on this. I also wanted to pole it: Good, bad, or meh? So...

Good: 1

Bad: 1

meh: 0

These is only one book left...

Having all books (1-6) read atleast 3 each and having seen all films, I think this park idea is gay.

i love harry potter, but sometimes i feel sad that it has become so "trademarked", being just another excuse for selling all kinds of things and supporting consumism. the harry potter park idea is a bit overkill for me...

I think it's an awesome idea. I'm getting so tired of the automatic viewpoint all of you take on things like this, the "ohh god, this? Don't ruin a good thing!" Theme parks are fun. They'll capture Harry Potter's world to the best of their ability. It won't tarnish anything. Theme parks have rides and shows, hence fun. Unless of course you're amongst the "too cool to care" crowd. Given the lifestyle of a lot of you guys though, that'll be the most common response. But it's ok. Just stay inside on your computers where you create your own environment.

I don't understand why people are acting like it's a bad idea, if you don't like Harry Potter then you obviously wouldn't enjoy the theme park. Just like I don't find myself in the Cinderella part of Disney World very often, but I'm probably not going to shoot myself in the mouth because they made it.

Ghost: I am prejudice towards ignorance, so that would explain why I appear to be so.

I think it would be really cool to walk through the world of Harry Potter, I mean you would recognize places where certain events happened and everything and it would just be really neat. But then, that's not the reason why it's being built. It's just another corporate scheme to make mass money off of the biggest selling books in the modern day, and it really sucks that they do that because as people have shown here it puts people off Harry Potter. So as much as I think it would be cool, I really think it's a bad idea because it just ruins people's appreciation of the books when big shots try to make millions off sad parodies of them.

Yeah, they're all so taking advantage of us poor customers who have no choice but to become victim to their villainous corporate ways. Poor JK Rowling too. I'm sure she's so upset that they've distorted her vision...all in the name of a theme park. :(

Stupid idea, it will be a pedophile's paradise. A ton of 10 year olds running around in magic costumes.

Yeah, probably should shut down Disney World too (similarly, another stupid idea). Having places where you can take the kids just isn't worth it in today's world, what with there being all these pedophiles on the loose taking children away from their parents.

Seriously though. Why are you guys so cynical over a theme park? Did you miss going through that stage of your life and now have something against it? I'd love to hear an explanation towards why the majority of you guys are against the establishment of a place for both children and adults, filled with magic and fun entertainment for all ages. I know that sounds cliche, but those places are fun!

Harry Potter fan? Me...? No way...:uhh:

Lol, only if there's a Viktor or Durmstrang related ride. Something like Ride The Viktor, lol. :P

Wow, I just realized, the name "Trowbridge" sounds incredibly Harry Potterish lol.

Because the only reason that it's being made is for people besides J.K. Rowling to make money off her genius. I like Harry potter, and you can be assured that I will have the last book read before I go to bed the day it is released, but it is just plain overkill that people are trying to take advantage of great ideas and just use them selfishly to make money. As a writer myself who is one day hoping to sell big, I would not personally let anything like this happen to my ideas.

On another note, but supporting the whole corporate corruption theme, ever heard of the Pendragon series by DJ MacHale? I personally think they are better than the Harry Potter books but there aren't even any film adaptations of them and the 8th installment was just published. Money-hungry business giants just want more money, and they turn to someone else's ideas that have been massively successful to accomplish their ends.

And you people act as if you didn't expect it, come on, with how popular the book series is, you had to have known this was going to happen sooner or later.

I, for one, am all for it, I like the book series, and even if I didn't I wouldn't spoil everyones fun, its a theme park for crying out loud, its not like its going to be a part of your daily lives, so get over it.

It's called capitalism. The stuff sells. And people enjoy it. You're mistaking corruption for good opportunity.

It's being made for the same reason Disney world and Universal Studios were made. There's a theme that's popular enough to make an artificial world about in which people will enjoy going to. Nobody's being taken advantage of here. Again you're missing the point that these places are made forfun and to have a good time.

I know one thing for sure - I'm not going to it. :notalk:

Although did anyone see the pictures/drawings of it on the news...it kinda looked like how I pictured it in the books.

I'm sure that J.K. Rowling is just rolling in the dough from the series of books that she started while living out of her car. Kudos to her for now being richer than the queen. Gotta give her that one =D>

I suppose it was inevitable, and given the lack of original children's material from the likes of Disney will probably be a welcome addition to the park.

At my age now though, if the rides are good enough I don't care too much what the theme is, so I'll see how they are before I pass judgement.

Urgh. I dearly love the books and the characters and I can just manage the films, but a themepark? Way to kill the imagination. I prefer the world of HP where it is now: in print and in my head.

I guess it could be nice for children, but it simply reeks of big cash. I had hoped JK Rowling would be more protective of her ideas and less impressed by the paycheck. To compare: Tolkien would never have borne the idea of a Middle Earth themepark and I don't quite see his progeny going for it either (they just publish every single word the man has ever written, but hey).
