Why don't I train combat?

This is a discussion that has been going on for years and will continue on for much longer; skillers and combat vs. total level ratios.

First of all, I'd like to point out that I idolized swampjedi, one of the best sub-90 combat skillers in the game (that means he has a lot of levels (1900+ total) below 90 combat (he has 88)).

Some people train combat only, and some rely primarily on skills. I have maxed out 3 of the easiest skills (fletching, cooking and firemaking) and have become quickly bored without combat. I've been aspiring for all stats 70+, among other goals, but most of my lower stats aren't going so well. Every skill in the bottom two rows is either very slow xp or very expensive, so all stats above a certain level tends to be difficult. I'm not the only one out there who aspires to be like swampjedi, and I know that I won't ever be like him.

On the other hand, many people do little but kill. The best example I can come up with is [apparently he's not the mods' best friend, but he was happy if you remember]. He has 126 combat and has terrible non-combat skills. I can't relate to him, but I know that others can. I see where they come from: you can only know the combat level of somebody unless they are wearing a skillcape or you look them up in the highscores, and killing is much more fun because of the variety (slayer) and different types of combat (different types of melee, mage, and range).

So, here's where you come in. I want to know your opinion on skills vs. combat. I'm getting bored with skills and have 20m+ to spend on barrows, dragon, and rune, and that option is looking good. On the other hand, I have 1620+ total at 93 combat, which I see as an accomplishment. I know that others have been in the same situation and have come out of it strong.

I'm going to bed. I have my last two exams tommorrow, so I'll be back soon to check on this thread. I'm really in a fix and I need to hear some opinions being thrown around.

Note: this should not be in help and advice; I am using a personal story to add to the argument.

Wait, is that Tub under that forum censor?

Anyways.... me, I did what I loved. That was killing. I hated skills and quests with a passion, so I spent all of my time at the Dagganoth Kings. Personally, it was the only way I could have fun. The only reason I did it rather than skilling was because it was more fun to me.

Skills aren't better than combat. Combat isn't better than skills. Do what you love, and please, for the love of God, make sure to have fun with it. It's a game after all, ya know?

I play Runescape to relax and have fun. To me killing monsters is not as fun as doing other things. I also don't find killing things relaxing either.

Not to say that I don't kill things, but I like wandering around, crafting runes, then I get the urge to pick a few pockets, fish a bit, etc.

I guess everyone has their own ways of having fun

Exactly. I do some slayer assignments, then go do a few barrows runs, the kill some random monsters, then go do a few farming rounds, then head off to PC, then maybe make some flat packs. Whatever I feel like doing.

Look, if your mom still drops you off at school, you ain't gangsta, pull up your damn pants!

Pretty much I started out doing only combat because when I started playing RS it was all I knew. When I became a member that's when I realized that I really liked skilling and ever since then I've been doing a combination of both, focusing more on skilling than combat but still switching between them whenever I feel like. I think you should just go with the flow, do what you have fun doing.

I love skills (1647 @ 93 cmb) and i will keep them up. For now i'm going for all 70, but took a break at barrows. i need to waste few pray pots and just relax from skilling.

People before me already mentioned: have fun whatever you do. I personally not big fan of cmb because of PC. For me skills > cmb. always been and always will be

1500+ total 89 cmb; 1600+ total and under 93 cmb.

02/04/07 reached all skills 60+ under lvl 90 cmb.

07/19/07 reached all skills 70+ at lvl 93 cmb.

Yeah ever since I started really focusing on skilling I've felt the same way as Tewas. Nearing on 1400 total at 91 combat now. Hoping for ~1800 while still under 100 cb someday. Maybe I'll make a blog over the Summer. CBA to do it atm, finals in a week.

I was 1836 total at 90 combat before hunter came out.

I also wanted to do all quests, so that is why I passed 90 combat and can not be compared to Jorus, the Tallest and Swampjedi.

I still am below 100 combat and I think that I could be the best skiller below 100 combat at the moment.

Low combat does not always mean no fighting. O:)

One of the things I think about is getting 99 slayer at combat 99... <3:

Of course I would also have 99 hitpoints.

2066 Total at the moment for 98 combat.

So skill along and do slayer. If you pick the right combat styles, your combat level could stay low.

2100+ total 3rd best skiller ever at 99 combat (maybe the best, highest total below 100 cb)

99 Cook 99 Fletch 99 Woodcut 99 Firemaking 99 Range 99 Mage 99 Thief 99 Fish 99 Agility 99 Mining 99 Runecrafting 99 Hp 99 Slayer 99 Smith 99 Hunt 99 Construction 99 Craft 99 Farming

The way I look at it combat skills aren't any different from other skills. 1700 skill total is 1700 skill total whether you're 80 combat or 120 combat. Its still the same number of levels, just levels in different skills. Somebody who chooses not to train combat skills is no different from somebody who chooses not to train mining.

I personally feel like it's worth it to have a high combat level. It's not too hard to train, it's really useful and it also looks good. I'm rather lvl 126 with a skill cape than a lvl 70 with the same one. It might look good on a lvl 70, but I and many others know that it takes a lot more time to get 126 combat + 99 in skill X than 70 combat + that lvl 99.

Anyways my point is to do what you feel like doing. If you like mining, be my guest. If you like pc, go to pc.

I think your total should grow gradually with your combat level. I'm level 104 with around 1620-1630 skill total, I can't remember the exact number at the moment and I tried the skilling thing, keep my combat lvl lower and just get total up but I got bored. I enjoy all skills in runescape, maybe not woodcutting, but enjoy all of them to an extent. And remember, those combat levels do add on to your total so they're all SKILLS.

EDIT: I don't have any 99 skills, nor do I intend to get any anytime soon. Because I let my skills grow passively I do not do excessive training on any skill. Though I wouldn't mind that slayer cape draped around my shoulders.... :-k

Having a High Combat helps because it enables you to kill monsters which at lower levels you aren't able to do.

For Example:

A Sub-90 can't go kill KQ for a d chain, yet a 100+ team or 110+ solo can kill her for a chain their by saving 13.5 mil. While the skiller has to come up with 13.5 mil. High Combat does help.

Don't forget Attack, Str, Defense, Hitpoints, Prayer, Magic, and Range give exp too.

Thanks everybody for your input. I really want to invest my santa in a mad dash to 65 slayer and see how things go after that, but I know that rares will skyrocket this summer, so I'm not sure that I want to sell it. I only have about 1m in my bank and I wouldn't be able to sell more items and get up to 2m cash, so I think I'm going to train some primary skills and then see what I want to do with the cash.

Off to chins, then maybe some willow cutting or iron-mining action after that :-w

Thanks again everybody. It seems I have been so caught up in levels and competition (especially after setting up a runemonkey account) that I have lost track of enjoyment and fun. Maybe my chat will be on later, if anyone want to add me. ::'

Eh, for me, combat is just better, because it allows me to do much more, and visit many more areas, but I really can't ignore skills, I need them to do quests... Well, I'm off to spend all my money on ranarrs for 52 herby...

There is no meaning or truth in life but that which we create for ourselves.

I used to be a low combat skiller, but having a low combat level began to limit what I could do. My combat level and low magic level made me an easy target every time I tried to abyss RC, for example. So I decided to work on Slayer. Using a Whip on Controlled setting, I was training 5 Skills at once, and getting cash and raw materials for other skills. And a lot of those raw materials were for 2 of my favorite skills, Farming and Herblore. And these free raw materials were expensive and/or next to impossible to get in a non-combat related method. I love training multiple skills at once (or doing skills that provide raw materials for other skills) so I have no regret for giving up being a low combat skiller. To each there own though.

In Runescape if you neglect any skills, then you are limiting the game for yourself.

Yes, one limits themselves by not doing what they don't find fun in the game. :-s ?

If you hate farming, don't farm. If you hate hunter, don't hunt. If you hate killing the KQ, don't kill her. It's not "limiting yourself", it's choosing what aspects of the game you would rather do based on how enjoyable they are.

Now, neglecting some skills might limit ones ability to do quests, which are generally helpful. Me, when I still partially enjoyed skills I got nearly all of mine to at least the mid-50s, since that's generally the level you need for almost all quests. After that, if I found a skill fun (like Construction) I did it, but if I didn't (as with Hunter) I'd just stick with the Kings.

Again, do what you find fun. Avoid "work" as much as possible; only do as much as you need to to have fun. This is a frikking game, have fun with it.

It does annoy me (for some reason) when people just train combat, but also annoys me when people just skill.

But i dont like training combat, i only ever do when doin slayer, and the people who are my lvl (92) that I have spoken to are far lower than me total wise (my total at this moment is 1530) - I do think it's important to have a good balance of both, but for me i think a good all round set of skills and a comfy combat lvl is the best.

I'm a freak... I will gladly do things I hate :/

I like setting and achieving goals. I love the rush I get when I finally get that skill/item/quest done.

Like I've spent 2 days at the Warriors gild killing Cyclops. By the time I got an iron defender I wanted to go do something else... But an hour ago, when I equippped that Rune Defender and saw my strength bonus in the triple digits it was all worth it.

The same for the first time I alched a yew longbow, or when I weilded a whip for the first time, or cast Claws of Guthix in the duel arena.

I love leveling and creating goals, any skill is worth training for me as long as I get to see that message telling me I gained the level to do what I wanted to do.

Just ask anyone who's seen one of my Final Fantasy save files, I love leveling up.
