I personally love to use XBows for the accuracy. I hit Black Dragons with amazing accuracy compared to other rangers with the same or higher ranged level. When I get a Black Dragon, everyone is amazed that I'm hitting 20 with mith bolts and I'm only 79 ranged.

I'm not really that impressed, I'm 72 range with rune c bow and my max is only 9, I'm not praying and I'm using bronze bolts.

Yea lol. I'm not very good at getting black drags (although killing them is easy, being first to attack them is not...), so I own blues. I can get 24 spaces of loot in like 15 minutes. And I only use like 15 bolts max on the blues... :D crossbows!!!! They own!!!!

and also my max with steel arrows at 73 range is like 9..

I'd really love to test out the effectiveness of bolts of lower levels compared to their arrow counterparts, however it really would be a waste of time for me since I'm 99 range.

 

Although I have found that using addy and rune bolts against higher lvl monsters is easily the most powerful and effective way of ranging in the game, so I don't see why lower leveled bolts should not be the same.

 

 

 

Anyway, if you use the accumulator to pick up arrows for you addy bolts really aren't that expensive. About 400 each, and 4/5 are picked up for you, which works out to like 80gp per shot; barely more expensive than crystal bow. Comparing these to the crystal bow, they hit FAR higher (I hit high 20's with crystal, and I've maxed at 37 with addy bolts (potted + pray, no special effect.) And now cross bows are the same speed as the crystal bow.

 

 

 

 

 

Maybe I'll go grab the pearl (e) [iron] bolts I have in my bank to compare them to iron arrows, but from what I've seen I have little doubt they're better for training.

 

As for people who can afford it, absolutely spend on the higher level bolts! They OWN!

A bit of a side question, but how (apart from smithing) do you lay your hands on Mith+ bolts? In the item database they only state that ÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¦Ã¢â¬Åcan be made by fletchingÃÆââââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃâÃ

Wyverns drop em lol.

 

There is really no super effective way to get bolts other than smithing or buying, since they are dropped in low amounts (less than 20) by high lvl monsters.

 

Some that drop rune bolts are kbd, dag kings, wyverns

Interesting. I have no doubt though that you were training on something with low defence

 

 

 

So perhaps the crossbows greatest strengths are their accuracy and ability to hit through defence better than knives (which have terrible accuracy)

For power ranging on things with low defense then yes iron knives are much better(but worse than chinchompas), but if you want to kill something with alot of defense then these crossbows truly shine, diamond tipped addy bolts rip through dragons faster than maxed melee with a whip or dragon halberd (nearly twice as fast in that case).

I hit a 23 on KBD with Mith Bolts using Range Pot and Prayer at 73 Range! :shock:

hmm...at 76 range, i hit a 18 with pearl tipped iron bolts (e) against both fire giants and blue dragons, (that is with the special).

Friend and I (both 99 rangers) got 22 kills on the kbd in a trip 8-)

Onyx bolts aren't really anything powerful... I only had about 30 shots worth, but max I've had with them at 99 range, potted to 112, and praying, was 38. Of course, it's very possible you can hit higher, as I said I only did 30 shots. That 38 max hit is even with the special triggered (it triggered about once every 5-6 shots), and the max healing I've received is 8.

 

 

 

Overall, I much prefer dragonstone bolts. Or, even better, d arrows with dark bow special. I know at least when I'm going to hit hard lol.

There's your problem. And yes, iron knives still are faster.

I still haven't seen an absolute max with the new crossbows. (That is to say, 99 Range

 

+range potion+onyx tipped rune bolts+prayer)

 

 

 

I imagine a 99 Ranger could hit 40+ with all the conditions just right.

At 95 range (85 potted), I hit 24s with mithril enchanted bolts. I never hit that high with crystal bow and I get bolts free from drops (Chaos Druids) when I train herblore. I have a shield equipped so never get hit hard by dragons anymore. Need to find someone with Karils top and bottom for 300k now.

 

 

 

No more payin 180k for me. The crystal bow is gonna get a lot of dust in my bank now. Now I can train fletching, crafting and range at the same time: mining gems (Karamja gloves 3), cutting gems/tips, fletching/smithy (if I dont have bolts), mage (enchanting them).

 

 

 

My advice is just get tons of Emerald bolts (e) and Pearl bolts (e) and go after that dragon visage.

Which one is better? Emerald bolts hit harder and do a lot of poison damage (especially considering how long it takes to kill a metal dragon, even with such a good weapon), but pearl bolts have a special that does a lot of damage. There's really no reason to use both, is there? I guess that you could switch to pearl after poisoning...
