I'm a Protestant Christian. I don't push my beliefs on anyone else though, I respect someone else's choice in faith or lack thereof. :)

Likewise. For the entire post.

Its not the topic that bothers me (although its annoying), it's the constant "this is going to turn into a flame war" or "this will get locked" that is more annoying. Shut the hell up and let the mods do their job you're annoying.

+1

This thread is just as arbitary as all the other simple answer type threads out there, but that doesn't mean it should be locked.

I'm very atheist and also Jewish. :D

That's very weird and also an oxymoron :P

Not really, Judaism is more of a culture/lifestyle nowadays. I've got quite a few Jewish friends who don't believe in God but would still call themselves Jewish. In fact my parents have got some good friends, they're both atheist but still observe all the rites and rituals of Judaism. It's quite curious really, I suppose it's a cultural heritage which some people want to honour. It wouldn't be for me, but meh. :)

Ah, we need to know everybody's religion so that we can successfully convert them to the one true faith - Atheism!

No, I am not trying to start a 'flame war.' People complain that everything turns into religious or political arguments, this is because ultimately they are the only topics worth talking about.

You may not be concerned with the spreading of worldviews and beliefs counter to your own - but I am.

Kill them before they spread!

Yeah but this thread is about what religion you are, not what culture/lifestyle you are. So when I saw Judaism, I assumed it was the religion.

Let's not start the whether or not atheism in a religion debate, the topic never said his religion is atheism, he asked our religion and stated that he is an atheist.

I'm agnostic.

Deist I guess, if that's what you call someone who believes in a god but isn't religious (i.e. not going to church, etc). I also find that Buddhism and similar Eastern religions have some good advice by the way of morality and etc.

I have no religion, but I'm not an atheist. I'd put myself on the shelf of agnosticism (I cannot claim to know the Truth, as the truth is very likely inherently unknowable). Doesn't take away the fact that I can understand the value and meaning of practising a religion and that I have drawn big parts of my moral system from christianity/catholicism. But it's just not in my personal nature to be religious.

But I agree, we've had our share of flaming religion topics here. Please, no more.

Atheists don't claim to know with 100% certainty that there is no god, they just lack belief and say it's highly unlikely. Any atheist who can't concede a little agnosticism is arrogant. It's ok to say "I don't know" because in all honesty we don't.

 Exactly my opinions Sumpta.

As stated by warri0r, that's my biggest beef with atheism, and pretty much any theism. We can't know there's a god, but at the same time, we can't know that there isn't one. Heck, we pretty much don't even have a single shread of evidence for or against the existence of a god here on Earth, just denial and a need to believe in a higher power.

In before an Atheism is or is not a religion debate.
Same here.

Actually - I don't really have a religion, I simply don't care for it at all, so that's Atheism right? I just go with since I wont care even if a god is proven so that rules out the other one... :-s

Agnosticism :P .

Or, as I prefer to call it, Fullmetalism :-w .

Fullmetal Alchemist, you will be missed. A great ending to a great series.

But by definition, atheism is the position where belief in deities is lacking or the notion of deities is rejected. If you meet any 'atheist' who claims to know that there is no god or tells you with absolute certainty that there is no god, you can kindly tell them to shove it because they are just on the religion bashing bandwagon using a tagline which they do not know the meaning of.

The key here is recognising the difference between believing, lacking belief and knowing. We lack belief in deities. We do not know that there are no supernatural deities; such knowlege is currently impossible to achieve with any degree of certainty (I'm being generous here, I should probably remove that 'with any degree of certainty'). Only knowlege of the natural world is possible with certainty and clarity.

Yeah but this thread is about what religion you are, not what culture/lifestyle you are. So when I saw Judaism, I assumed it was the religion.

Hmm, that's an interesting point. I suppose the word religion is fairly loosely defined and not as specific as a science would like it to be: on the one hand, it can refer to personal spiritual beliefs. However, just as often, it refers specifically to an organized religion - one with rituals, especially, and often with a hierarchy of authority.

I belong to a synagogue and attend regular services on Shabbat (the Sabbath). I follow rituals (halachic law - i.e. keep kosher) and "celebrate" holidays (which means fasting on Yom Kippur, having a seder and keeping "kosher l'Pesach" on Passover, asking for forgiveness on Rosh Hashana).

In addition, there is a purely cultural/heritage aspect to it. It's part of my identity and even ethnicity, and I can't really change that. I've been struggling to understand my Jewish identity more and more lately, particularly as I've realized that I don't support a large number of active jewish lobbyist groups, nor the state of Israel as it currently exists. It's confusing - and yet I still can't help but think of it as my religion.

I don't believe in God, but I follow many other aspects of Judaism. I think I would count it as a religion. Other religions like Buddhism are even less centered around a "God" and are largely even more philosophy and tradition - and I would still count them as religions, as well.

Everybody hug and spread the love :D

Mad, although you do follow many of the Jewish rituals, I would not say your are a real jew (as it's commonly defined). Sure you may support their holidays and events but if you do not believe in the high power most Jewish people believe in then your doing these rituals and ceremonies for no reason. Your not following the religious aspect of it. As it's commonly accepted the Jewsih religion and many other religions are based on a higher power. Religions such as Taoism and Buddhism are more loosly based on philosphy then higher powers, although they still are present.

You can't ever find a place that's nice and peaceful, because there isn't any. You may think there is, but once you get there, when you're not looking, somebody'll sneak up and write "(bleep) you" right under your nose. Try it sometime. I think, even, if I ever die, and they stick me in a cemetery, and I have a tombstone and all, it'll say "Holden Caulfield" on it, and then what year I was born and what year I died, and then right under that it'll say "(bleep) you."

You don't have to follow the religious aspect of it to be Jewish. The official definition of a Jew is if your mother was Jewish, then you yourself are Jewish (the father doesn't matter). That's what my friend's rabbi told me. :P

Ironically, that would make me Jewish, since my birth mother was Jewish (I however was adopted into a Christian family).

So by birth you are Jewish but by baptism Christian?
