Brother - how can I stop him killing my internet

Featured Replies

OK, I'm pissed, my brother keeps streaming video on the PC upstairs and whenever he does it absolutely destroys the speed of my wireless internet on my laptop - im talking minutes to load a web page, its unbearable.

Question - how can I stop him, or at least limit the amount of downloading he can do? He's not a tech head so it won't take to much to stop him but its really ticking me off.

Any ideas?

If you have access to the router just block the ports he's using.

Or stab him. I hear thats the new thing brothers do when annoyed.

The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past.

You can block the ports he's using or threaten violence. or asking. Other than that, there's nothing you can do.

He's probably also torrenting, which also messes with the connection.

Teaching and inspiring.

If you have access to the computer he is using, you can use a parental control or a proxy server that blocks the particular site he uses to stream videos. That would permanently solve the solution, or you can simply block the ports that he uses to connect to the web.

i mean wth no1 cares about that weak noob that was scared of the great almighty lord ZAROS!

There is a few ways you can do it, you can do it directly from his computer while he is sleeping, etc, and if he uses firefox/internet explorer you can block the websites, you could block the ports, etc.

Rub your feet on the carpet and touch his motherboard.

One word: tcpkill

Google it, it's also included in the Ubuntu "dsniff" package, although you might have to enable the universe repository to get it.

Use a TCP tweaking program, and give him an RWIN that's only 2x MSS (or 4x, if you're feeling generous).

Then when his video goes all jumpy, tell him it's throttling coz he's used it too much.

Also, if wired to a router, make his connection 10Mbit, not 100, as you have a considerable latency disadvantage on wireless

its probably that all his internet bandwidth is being hogged by the streaming and none of this would help assuming hes using a router?

The permanent way to solve this situation is to lay a parental control on the site he uses. Backfire ftw?

Pretty much done with rs now

Parental Block. block the site he's using, pirate bay? bittorrent?

although if he is a smart one, he could EASLY get past it.

I think it's safe to say the author of the thread doesn't care anymore, since he hasn't replied in over a month. Repeating the same methods over and over isn't going to bring him back.

The best solution would've be QOS control if the router supported it.
