Attention...Recognition and Lies, Which+Why do YOU Seek it?

DRUMINATOR17

Recommended Posts

Is there any one of you out there that can HONESTLY say that you dont Actually try to seek Attention?

Whether or not its positive or bad attention is two different things all together.

Many and most of the people that play this game usually seek the first part of this attention in the form of some kind of recognition. Which makes sence as I'm sure not many of us would play this game if it was just a Single Player game. (thanks highlanders  )

HOWEVER, Lets flip the coin over and ask the same question.

Why do people seek the negative attention that often times can be found seeking ingame or on these forums? Do they think that they are getting the same sence of Recognition and accomplishment from doing it? For better examples, What drives these people to not only scam or hack but also to LIE, often times blantently lie to other players over some of the most pointless matters. Even in the event the player doesnt really know what the answer/truth reallly is and doesn't really mean to be lying to another player, yet through talking to them theres no other possiblity that they could be mistaken or mislead, a.k.a wrong / incorrect.

*(time for the strong closer)*

Now the REAL QUESTION IS: Which Type of "Attention" (Positive or Negative) Do you seek and Why do you Seek this "Attention" ?

Also why Do you think people Strive to Achive either type of Attention?

*(Wait theres more to this! I'll put it in the Second Post)*

Ill Add the examples to the second post. Mostly includes some recent messages ive had with folks to help me get to the point of making this topic.

Ah, i get it.

I seek attention by providing people with proven facts or things that i have experience in. When someone without any experience in say PKing talks about it, and the people in it, and its completely wrong, I get angry. In your case, your angry with a f2p player saying that soloing natures in the abbys, its possible to do 4k ess an hour (which is impossible :shame: )

Ahhh...now I get it.

Yes, I get this problem with people on the outside world also. And yet, it's so annoying when they think they're right, yet they're not. And the thing is they don't want to stop and listen to you. They go on and on about how they're right, and won't stop for two seconds to think about what you're saying. Very annoying. <.<

Aha confusing at first, read it all though.. I got one thought however. Did he specify what runes he was making? In case of fires, 4k is possible with CW banking. At least I think it is. Been a while since I made them.

Anyway to the point of all this. It is annoying yes but well, human ego is a wondrous thing. Some have it smaller, some bigger. And there all the things begin. Also these blindfolded arguments about weird things.

The things I do, I do it for my personal satisfaction, not to gain something in the eyes of the others. I do the weird things I do because it's what I want to do, for myself, because it's the frivolous things I love. I really don't care what others think, or don't think, of me. But I definitively wouldn't be playing this game if it was single player, it'd be pointless, so I wouldn't do what I do if there was no one to share it with, but my primary motivation is not others.

Is there any one of you out there that can HONESTLY say that you dont Actually try to seek Attention?

Hmm, I don't think that I do.

I have enough responsibility and burdens in my life that

I definately don't want more clutter in my life.

I play RS in a solo style. I don't PK and I am not in a clan.

I own no vanity gear and I wear only what I need to wear for whatever skill I'm training.

Basically, I don't care about other players think in that

I play the game my way and I let them play the game their way.

For me, the fun is in achievement and earning greater capability on my main.

All of my skills, except for smithing, are "F2P maxed"

Especially when it comes to these Tip.It Forums and the game of Runescape itself,

Well, I don't think that I seek attention on these forums as well.

I have no stat signature and my main character name has never been revealed. I'm just a voice from the void, so to speak.

I started reading the forums to learn better ways of playing the game,

getting items, training, buying/selling, etc.

After a while I realized, "Hey, I can answer that guys question!"

and I began to post here as well...

For some people its a defence mechanism, others are just attention seeking [bleep]. People will always conufse you, you'll think you have it sussed and worked out why people do apparently counter-productive things, but then someone will just blow you away with their idiocy/lunacy, i've had people argue the toss with me over things they literally know Nothing about and theres no reason for it, they know they know nothing yet they try and blag (pretend) they know something on the off chance of....of what impressing me? making me feel stupid? i dunno, w/e as i said explaining the motivations behind one lie of one person who is not yourself is veeeeeeeeeeery hard.

We are all attention-seekers at some point. We seek it conciencely or nonconciencley, and at different limits. Some of us seek amoung our friends, others amoung family, or some few people amoug the country. Same in RuneScape...

People who want to buy full Wizard Robes with gold trims, are seeking attention even if they're not relasing it. Why would you need robes with the same stats as another pair of robes 400K cheaper, or mystic robes that have better stats and is cheaper? We seek attention or to some of us, to be better than other people which is the same as attention. Getting a goal in a skill is to get attention. Skillcapes wearers are attention-seekers too, the cape just shouts out "LOOK AT ME! I got 99 !!111W00t!"

I would love to have 99 Magic, when I think about it, I want it because it would be cool to have 99 magic. Why cool? Because cool is attention, and thus I seek attention even when it's not my direct reason.

I'm not saying attention-seeking is bad, but just don't push it like Paris Hilton or the local noob in Varrock. It just makes you look like an idiot and annoys people.

We are all ...

IMHO, the word "all" is vastly overused and abused...

...to be better than other people which is the same as attention.

But only if you let other people know about it.

Getting a goal in a skill is to get attention.

Not for everyone.

Reaching a goal in a skill could be a means of earning money.

After all, Yew chopping autoers didn't reach their levels to get "attention"

Drum, you did not have my permission to post those PMs, take them off please. Though, I still hold true to what I said of 4k nats. Idc who argues with me, and I'm not even going to debate on that.

-------

I don't know why you posted this topic, perhaps to publicize what you think of my stupidity, or to retaliate because of whatever insult you think I gave you in the PMs.

---

Anyways OT, I seek attention in RuneScape, not on forums. By RuneScape I mean finding new friends, and possibly even new pking teams. The amount of attention I want is minimal in rs, just enough to start a conversation.

Though it sometimes backfires and you get a topic made about yourself seeking attention, and which will probably cause massive flame.

Very nicely worded.

It is unfortunate most who read this will assume your saying everyone is an attention seeker and take offence.

But it is true whether being a blatant annoying attention seeker or merely doing normal things that result in some attention we all do it. Its just society now labels it as a bad thing.

I'd say I seek attention for vast knowledge, after all 90%+ of my rs friends be-friended me through my giving of solid info or advice on any given skill, quest or mini-game. Its not something I do intentionally to seek attention, but I just absorb information like a sponge and then freely offer it to others thus gaining attention for it.

The only notable occasions of me actively seeking it would be when someone annoys me too much and then says I know nothing about the game, which causes me to pull out the my "golden triumphs" (aka in first ten or so rsers to discover ghostly robes, the me2 and ghostly robe guides on tip.it and my retired staff listing on tip.it)

But hey I'm human gotta brag sometimes, thought usual I get more attention about thoose things from friends saying things in arguments like "I know a person who worked for tip.it" etc which always leads to wildly exaggerated stories to do with pay for working there, being the owner and being zezima's second account o.O. Where as in reality I was on trial, but was a naive and snobby kid and got myself kicked out after the me2 guide. All other credits were merely via submissions on forusm etc.

Wow I went off point a tad oopps

Also our conversation points out the key point of my topic quite well. Im not sure why you would want to remove something that illistrates so well what im trying to say.

I Agree with this 100% which is why this is what I do and how I handle the situations like this when they arrise.

Im not sure about other people out there when they correct others, but for me I feel rather stupid pointing out that someone is wrong about something in a video game. However with my beliefs and the way I have been raised and the choices I have made in my life. I believe that no matter how small or how trivial the thing the person is wrong about, should be corrected.

I mean even though its not going to make any difference, most likely, in either person's life in a weeks time. The fact of the matter is that since it is such a small and trivial matter in most cases, why should the one person that is wrong try to decive others in the first place with what they say?

I don't seek attention from others, i've never made it obvious what kind of level i am in runescape, for all most people know i could be level 50 or 126. I make sure my other love (the mighty spurs) is above "90+ whatever skill) on my signature.

For some reason i feel a bit bad if someone is say level 75 in a skill and im 90 and they ask, it might look like im pointing out how great i am but i never ask someone if they're lower than me. I think rs is a very "im better than you haha" kinda game, with skills being the main idea a lot of people strive to levels simply to be better than their friends or most "importantly" random people they dont know. The introduction of skill capes sort of aided this, i dont have a 99 and i wouldn't wear my cape unless i liked its visual (went with my outfit) because i see it as a bit arrogant more than simply being proud of your level. I think the best way to know that someone cares so much about what other people think is if they train a skill just so they can be high enough to have a good overall, it doesn't matter what your overall is! Just enjoy the game when you play and take the levels as they come!

Yes, provided that you actually let someone else know about it.

Is it attention that I get when I level mining from 85 to 86 and then tell no-one about it?

...I highly doubt people get an 99 an don't tell no one.

I agree that most players would, in fact, let many other players know that

they acheived such a high goal.

But that doesn't mean that they would go out and let the world know about

every level thay got in every skill along the way to 99.

In other words, leveling is just a means to an end

and not something, in itself, worth drawing attention to.

As I said in an example in my post, it isn't always directly for attention.

Well, your overall message appears to be something like "people level for attention"

I think that many players feel that leveling is just what needs to be done to reach your goals.

In this example, why would you need money?

To get cool stuff? To get more 99s? Just to have?

Perhaps to allow faster training.

I'm sure that we both know that RS has a lot of skill grinding to do

and buying certain raw materials can vastly speed up training.
