Now that I got your attention, I have a problem with my backyard... its quite strange really. Well, I have a large backyard(more then an acre) and I was thinking that would be awesome if me and my friends could get together during winter and have a snowball war.

 

 

 

One problem, the only part you can walk around is a gated area and a patio because the surrounding area, although our property, is covered in a very very dense forest that has had a nice 17years to grow, including weeds the taller then the fully grown evergreens surronding the pool, more than tree branches in diameter, and roots that go down 3ft and then spread out 6ft. There are giant crawling weeds that spread out 5ft at the least and raise about 2-3ft. Poision Ivy the length of fully grown oak trees, and to top it off a medley of a bunch of other weeds. A swimming pool thats 50 x 35ft+deck & patio is OK, but it would be alot better if we had all that space.

 

 

 

My dad has strayed concentratedly with weed killer yet the still stand and slashing them down only to see them start to grow back a couple weeks later. Hiring a crew would cost thousands.

 

 

 

My question is how can we remove these massive weeds?

He has a point. Buy a machette. No, seriously. Depending on your budget, you can buy a fully functional machete that will cut right through all those weeds. Good brands for machettes; Cold Steel, Tramontina, Ontario, or (if you want to spend a bit more but for a better quality) Condor Tool & Knife. For around 70 USD, you will find a good machette.

Try putting a giant tent over it for a while. As long as they don't get sunlight, you're fine.

A pretty good idea, cept the cops and stiuff might not like it. :? If you can, burn it down, or you got a lot physical labour in the future.

On thing you can do to stop the growth, is to cut them down, then get some sort of oil based paint or something else thats kinda toxic, then place it over where you cut and let it dry. We did this with trees we cut down, and they can never grow again from that area.

 

 

 

Ya, the root system will be a huge problem, as there are probably tons of roots under those things. You can try a controlled fire once you cut them down to burn away most of the roots, but the only other option is to manually dig them up, and you could be going way deep.

 

 

 

 

 

One idea is to find the really bad spots, then dig up as much of the root system as possible then in the ground put some kinda of material that the roots would have a hard time getting through, and then cover that with dirt and sod.

If you think so. Buy a 300 USD sword then. (either a 9260 Tenchi Katana from Cheness Cutlery, or a 9260 SGC Series Katana from Cheness Cutlery, those are made to sustain heavy damage)

Guys, cutting through weeds are not a problem, if you do it right, its ok. The problem is, weeds grow back at an accelerated growth rate compared to most other plants. Therefore, its the roots that are the problems, not the stem.

Plant grass. At my country house, we had a problem with a sort of plant that multiplies itself, and takes expansion enourmously. Grass apparently suffocates other plants, thus preventing them to grow, worked for us anyway.

If you outside city limits, you can probably do a control burn (depends on where you live). Check with fire department for burn days and rules. I've had good success with a very strong spray (my friend owns a xmas tree farm, so he has access to chemicals you have to have license for). I believe the main ingredient he uses tho, is crossbow. Good spray is the only thing that will also kill the roots. The tractor machine or whatever is probably the easiest method of removing.

You can always have the controlled fire at night so noone could see the smoke :thumbsup: :-$ . And not everyone gets a reaction from poison ivy. Infact, I remember it being a pretty big chance of not being allergic.

Im not sure whther this will be powerful enough to use on them, but you could use one of those hand lawn mower things, the electric ones that spins a small piece of cable round really fast.

 

 

 

I used one in our grandads old house to clean up the garden a bit, but that was like long grass, and you need to destroy big weeds.

You'll need to dig up the roots which will probably only be possible with a small digger which you can hire.

If there is some kind of machine you can rent that would chop down the weeds, and immediately after, spray weed killer on it, that would work really well. Otherwise, just keep going on spraying weedkiller and mowing them down.

Well then you could go as far as spraying poison over the entire field and set down new grass afterwards.

@the OP: Could you take a picture of what we are dealing with here? Most likely you will end up just having to keep on cutting them down all the time. Getting the roots out would be ideal, but if you haven't exaggerated any, then it just wouldn't be plausible with that bad of stuff. Keep on cutting them down and never let them get big, then in a few years the roots will be rather small also. A small plant won't sustain a large root, eventually it will start dying.

How do you want me to take pictures? Like all around, pictures of dense areas, pictures of a general area, stand above my pool and take pictures?
