I had a phone call from the Collage I applied for, who want me in tomorrow for an interview, I explained that it was too short notice for me to do a portfolio, seeing as I wasn't sure if I'd actually go, or work for a year, and then apply in '08.

so they said, 'sure, no worries, what we'll do tomorrow is set you up on a computer for a while and ask you to design something'

'WHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAATT?'

I'm clueless, I have a firm knowledge of photography, but not graphic design, I was hoping to use my knowledge and experience of photography in graphic design, and then learn all I need to know in the next 2 years of the course.

I'm a fast learner, but not that fast..

what do I do?

should I be honest and explain?

or fake it, and see how it goes?

I'm helpless..

The real college I applied to asked for a portfolio when I wanted to go into architecture. I conveniently "forgot" to send them one, and they still accepted me. Too bad I couldn't afford to go...

It might be different at your college though. Are you trying to get into graphic design or photography?

Usually photography is kind of lumped in with it.

I'd be honest about it, tell them that you are interested in the photography aspect.

I'm only a freshman in highschool now, but I want to get into graphic design when I get older.

Wow, cool story, Hansel.

I'd try and fake it and if it all goes belly up, come clean and admit the difficulties. In such case, could you squish together something today highlighting the strengths that you have to present to them? Wouldn't have to be much, but something to show them nevertheless.

Anyways, in your situation I would explain the situation to them. Heck I couldn't just sit down and be calm when they tell you "ok, could you first design a simple taj-mahal type of 3d architecture example? The photoshop shortcut is on the desktop'

Tell them you're more interested in the photography side of studying instead of the graphic 'design' (but you're willing to learn that if they just gave you more time). They absolutely must understand if you tell them you can't be prepared in 24 hours when you meet them tomorrow.

This is important to you so I wish you good luck for tomorrow man.

First of all, I think that school had to tell you this a bit sooner, or at least give you some more time for it.

You could try to do a quick run through your photos and pick the best one out, upload them to a Datastick, and bring it to them.

I think its best to do what Lancer said though :)

That was kind of lame, doesn't even make sense, he's not whining...

I'd just tell them you're interested in the photography aspect of it and ask for some time to get a portfolio together, maybe they'll accept you for next year.

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

Come clean after you've lied to their faces? No, I don't think that would work somehow. :-k

I'm with Nadril. Just be honest. Give it a try, but tell them beforehand you're actually into the more photographic aspect. Honesty, persistance and effort - those are qualities they'll admire.

Whoosh.

on top of the bandwagons I see Bubs

Anyway, Bluelancer's and woopidoo's replies seem the best I think. I've been in that situation before, although a lot less was at stake, and let me tell you it wasn't fun walking out of the place looking like an idiot :P

Tell them your situation.

Tell them you are experienced most of all in photography. Tell them your strengthes too, instead of just your weaknesses. Don't tell them you are more interested in the photographic aspect, just that you have little to no experience in graphic design. Then sit down and see what you can do with the computer. They probably only want to get to know you a little anyway.

If they really expect you to have experience in graphical design and see that as requirement, you can hardly fake it anyway.

How is that lying, exactly? Attempting something you're not adept in, but trying nevertheless - than admitting to your own frailties if you don't succeed...good definition of lying there.

To be honest if they told me that I'd tell them that photoshop isn't a piece of 3d modelling software then they'd give me full marks and I'd win.

If you are going to be pedantic, 'they' never said you had to use photoshop

Get high beforehand, and see what you can't come up with!

Win.

You'll be surprised at how many things you become an expert at when you get high.

On a serious note, the short-termness of it sucks. If you're not that good at graphic design the first step would be mastering the pen tool on photoshop, because as far as I can see its used alot in advertising (ex: iPod silhoettes). Or you can bring in a tablet and try to impress them.

right,

I'll give it a go, I'm unsure about what they actually want me to do.

and if I start failing miserably.. I'll come clean and explain.

Interview in 3 hours 40 minutes..

good luck, and may the force be with you
