Basic pro:

-Better technology, easier lifestyle. Much, easier lifestyle.

Basic con(s):

-Less understanding of nature, less ability to survive away from technology.

-A myriad of moral dilemmas that would put all of ours today to shame. Mind swapping (resulting in possible immortality and other underground problems), the line between man and machine (cyborization), invasion of privacy, living in virtual worlds, reworking someone with drugs and technology to make their state of mind socially acceptable (psychology without the psychiatrist), information being downloadable to the brain resulting in a lack of drive to learn, and that's just the stuff off the top of my head. I've said if before, and I'll say it again: In the future, us, and our children are going to be morally screwed.

the future is bright, the future is orange

Pro: Higher standards of living for everyone

Con: Community no longer exists people just spend more time with themselves and their close groups of friends.

A friend to all is a friend to none.

The future is going to be chaotic. There is going to be power shifts among the global community. China is going to emerge as the leading power. Its going to be way overpopulated. And Americans are going to drive themselves into the ground with our laziness.

Don't forget India. Massive power shifts to East Asia in da future...

And sure, Americans can appear lazy, but being the country with the highest productivity in the entire world, I don't think that point really holds all that well. America's going to be a world power for quite a while, and it may retain it's status as the world power for centuries, at the very least staying equal with East Asia rising powers.

Also, the average American works 1800-1900 hours a year. The average European works 1400-1500 hours a year. I don't want to turn this into another "Defend America" thread, but the world needs to stop pointing fingers at America once in a while :| . Just because everyone says Americans are all lazy bastards doesn't mean you should believe them, especially considering that you live here in the first place :-s .

I also don't want to turn this into a different subject, but.....

We do work hard, but when we get home, we are lazy. Proof? Rising obesity rates.

Much better technology leads to relying on that technology to much (laziness)

So the rise in technology, which is inevitable, will lead to more laziness, but thats just imo.

Oh, yes, the technology we have in America (and throughout the world) is proof of that. Productivity will rise with lazyness as technology becomes more advanced, that's pretty much a given.

But, of course, in the future the drug market will be so far beyond ours that I doubt anyone will be obese :-w . Lazy as hell, but obese? Eh, doubtful.

Cons:

Population may lose intelligence, allowing computers to do the most basic of all tasks

Laziness ensues from this

Large-scale wars likely between countries (Has been happening for many years, but with technology of nowadays it's very dangerous)

Enflamed population (too many people)

More animal species likely to become extinct (Sharks, Dolphins, bears etc) due to man hunting etc

Pros:

Better living standards

Better technology

I like the world pretty much as it is now, hopefully the future won't be full of such Cons. :-w

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

The world will never accept that, there'd be revolution before most of those things could happen. Things that affect every individual will be challaneged by the community, the future will be steady as it is now. We will have more super powers, more possible cold war like situations, harsher terorism possibly but i doubt a new world war will ever happen. Industry particulaly in the west will be crippled by green conservation methods enforced by the UN if we don't find a better way to manufacture. The economy will be affected for a time, but as always science will prevail. We'll have to fight more natural disasters but i think that will be the worst that happens.

With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.

All ya'll saying that the world will be overpopulated are forgetting that in advanced countries, the population is actually shrinking on average in each generation. It's only in third world countries, where families need the extra children for labor, that population rates are increaing.

The rule goes for America as well. The major reason for our increases in population is not birth rates, but rather immigration. We take in more foreigners each year than the rest of the world combined, which explains why our population keeps increasing.

Other factors result in the decreasing of population size as well, even though higher standard of living is pretty much a prerequisete for it. For instance, in Japan it is undesirable for a woman to marry (based on the current culture), so the population is shrinking there. Look at most advanced countries, and you'll notice an average negative growth rate; if we find a way to alleve third world countries of most of their burdens (which I'm almost sure we'll do), it'd doubtful that overpopulation will be one of the major problems of our future.

Eh, you never know. The technology for that kind of stuff could be built underground with investments from rich entrepeneurs desiring said technologies (i.e., what rich guy wouldn'y cough up the money for the technology to mind swap, if it resulted in him being guarenteed immortality). Other technologies could be secretly created by the government and police. And others could be accepted by society up front, with no major revolutions to fight against them. Sure, I'll admit that at least a few of those technologies will be stopped in mid- or pre-creation by the public, but you can't deny that it's still possible for them to be built without the people knowing.

I wonder if the belated earth magnetic shift will ever occur in the lifetime of Man :-k . That could get messy.

From the scientific viewpoint...

Pros:

  • Hopefully at some point a unified field theory of everything will finally be developed.

A complete theory of consciousness might be developed.

Stem cell research will be implemented to easily facilitate organ transplants.

    A cure for cancer?

Transport will become more efficient and less polluting.

Nanotechnology will be developed and implemented, radically changing the world of manufacturing.

Commercial nuclear fusion will be developed.

Cons:

  • As medical science gets better, more people live longer, the world's population increases and places a further strain on resources.

The effects of global warming will inevitably be felt, no matter how green we try and become.

New diseases develop, evolved to be immune to nearly all current medical treatment, they spread rapidly across the global network.

{I'm not trying to post a counter argument, I'm just following the line of though in a different direction}

So, if the poor countries have a positive growth and the rich countries a negative one, what will we have then? An even more unfair and unequal wealth distribution. It's one of the flaws of current capitalist politics (not only the one in the U.S., and the world is really going this way: With capitalism, economies prosper, at the cost of social advancement and social inequity. Most probably the world won't follow the way of state socialism or communism again, seeing how it has failed in before (GDR, Stalinist Russia), so a new socio-economical system will arise with time. That's for the politics, seeing as everyone has talked about technology.

The future IS now...

Not really.

And you put the accent on the wrong word.

Yes, we are in the future. When someone says ''future'' usually the person thinks of large buildings and flying cars and lasers and robots. No, we are in the future RIGHT NOW. What I think is funny though, 100 years ago a twelve year old boy thinks what the world will be like in 100 years. He imagines high flying buildings and top-quality cars and world peace. We have the 2.
