~ Fire Bolting Iron Dragons ~

Featured Replies

I'm planning to get from 60 to 70 Magic using Fire Bolt with Chaos Gauntlets. I have wanted to kill Iron Dragons for a long time, so I decided why not do it with Magic? I might not be as accurate as if I was Fire Bolting Ankous, but I'll take my chances.

Do you think it is sensible to use Fire Bolt against Iron Dragons? I'm hoping for Dragon/Visage drops (I know I won't get, but still...) =P~

kingtut3.png

besides not being to kill many dragons at your magic level you have to consider the cost of anti-fire breath potion.

I know, 3k each.

How many kills do you think I would get per trip? I want to try at least one trip!

kingtut3.png

Well, on average, 50 bolts per dragon. Bringing, say, 12 (4) antifire potions will give you... 5 minutes a dose, times 48 doses total = 240 minutes = 4 hours. Of course, you don't have to stay that long.

On average, 50 bolts a minute, so a dragon a minute. That's around 50 dragons or so with 12 (4) antifires. I might be wrong about this, but it seems pretty correct to me.

With 84 magic, full ahrims, and chaos gloves I kill iron dragons on average with 30-36 fire bolts each. I find that its not the most effective way to raise magic or earn money. However, if you do get a Dragon plate or skirt, you will earn some decent money =]

I dont think your gonna make it ^^

If your gonna do it, get the BEST mage armor you can get, this is probably the minimum you will get away with:

Mystic body

Mystic skirt

Mystic hat/Farseers helmet

Amulet of glory

Mystic boots/Wizard boots

Mystic gloves/any gloves

Fire staff/Air staff (steam staff would be the best, ONLY CHAOS RUNES NEEDED! :o)

Anti dragon shield

God cape (Guthix roxxor)

Ring of life

Dont use weaker items :P if you can use better stuff

I've been maging Metals for the last week, and currently sitting on 15k chaos used, only a dragon skirt for the back. Thats without the cost of potions and firerunes.

I'll break down what i do;

Each Iron takes, at your level, more like 70 bolts to kill.

You could probably do 35 a minutes, so thats about a kill every two minutes.

An anti fire pot lasts six minutes, so thats 3 dragons per potion.

At 3kea, thats 1k per dragon for your potion, 9.8k for chaos, and then 2.5kish for your airs.

Thats about 12k per dragon... If you use more then 10k bolts without a dragon leg drop, you're in serious trouble with a loss. I'm only there as im hoping for drops in the long run, as your's is a relatively short goal, you'd be better off alching at a minimal loss.

I killed each dragon with about 40-50 bolts at level 70 (until I forgot my shield and a steel dragon ate me), so I'm guessing it would take about 60-70 bolts at level 60. Bring a wealth, there's really no danger in maging the dragons as longs as you don't lag out and remember your shield...

Hmmm, no, don't do that. Is 60 magic unranked now? Damn alchers... I'd suggest killing caged greaters in the ogre enclave if you want magix experience. Metal dragons really waste your runes, but they're fun to kill.

Thanks to all replies!

I'm going to spend all my Chaos anyway, I'm not looking to break even or for a profit.

I just like the fact that Iron Dragons can drop such great items. I'm bored of training at bones-only places!

kingtut3.png

People keep talking about losses etc,

but also keep in mind that maging irons is fun and you get mage and hit xp (possibly slayer/def) too!

It's the price you pay for xp :)

Amen.

kingtut3.png

I gained many levels doing what you are considering. But I think I started at around 70 or so. At 60 you may splash a fair bit.

You have 70 Def so wear Ahrims, it will help a fair bit.

BTW the person who claimed you could kill a dragon every minute is way off in left field. The attack rate for mages is far slower than a cast every second. It's a slow process to mage them.

You must be kidding me! It's incredible boring, doing nothing for 50+ casts, *yawn*. Yes, you may get a thrill from the level of the monsters and the possible drops, but that'll be over soon, as they are no thread at all and the fact you have to do nothing for a very long time.

When everything's been said and done, more has been said than done.

Killing steels aren't worth it, even at mage lvls in the 80s...took me around 600 bolts to kill 11 steel dragons (For a task) >_<...with all cruddy drops. I prefer to kill more iron dragons with those bolts, and get some more loot =]

I recommend sticking to irons, you should really only do irons till 90 mage, after that you can do a mixture, but even at 92 I still stick to irons mostly. People who say this is extremely boring may be semi right, but I like to watch TV or Youtube when I kill them, and this is way better than alching.

Bring around 3k chaos runes and respective amount of fires or airs, 7-8 anti-fire pots (not too sure on amount of this...i just bring whatever i have normally), 1-2 sharks in case you get hit by melee atk, money to enter dungeon, and axe to cut down vines.

For equipment:

Ahrim Body/Legs > Mystics Body/Skirt

Ahrim Hood > Farseer Helmet

Dragonfire shield > AntiFire-Shield (Must have 1 or the other!)

Chaos Guantlets > Mystic Gloves

Infinity Boots > Mystic Boots

Fire/Air Staff

~Dont follow ddaanniiellh's choice for inventory/gear.

After over 100k casts I have perfected probably the best gear.

Gear:

Ahrims Top > Mystic Top

Ahrims Skirt > Mystic Bottom

Ahrims Hood > Farseer Helmet

Amulet of Fury = Amulet of Glory

Infinity Boots > Mage Boots

Chaos Gaunts (A Must!)

Seers Ring > Ring of Wealth

God Cape (Recommended)

Antifire Shield > Dragonfire shield (Dragonfire lowers mage attack)

Inven:

16 Antifires

905 Coins

Disposable Axe (I use steel)

4 Sharks

50 Nats

7k Chaos

22k Fires

Glory/Tele

16 Antifire(4) potions lasts amount perfectly 7k casts, I usually bring 10k casts just because sometimes someone will died and you get some free antifires.
