It is completely situational. On one hand I don't want a kid to run into something without knowing the risks, but on the other hand it is obviously your choice.

All based off of maturity.

Obviously you have to be of a certain maturity to do such things. I'd also add a clause of doing it for the right reasons. If you're doing it based on peer pressure or solely to get paralysed then you're a moron.

I'd also rather people stay away from anything that's severely addictive or seriously alters brain chemistry, such as meth or heroin.

I don't really care what you do if I dont know you but if are drinking, smoking, or doing drugs and you're underage, I dont want you to end up in the hospital or even dead.

I go to the biggest party school in my town and Someone usually has a party every weekend. I never used to go to parties cause I dont drink or smoke, but ever since one of my friends got killed from drunk driving, I started to go and offer free rides home and rides to pick up their car, because I would rather they get home safe than end up in a ditch dead.

That's downright decent of you. I'd just let you know (you've probably thought of this) not to advertise yourself as "designated dave" openly or you might get people getting smashed only to assume that you'll be there to take them home but when you don't turn up or there are too many to taxi around, they end up driving anyway.

I try not to advertise myself but if I see someone way too hammered, Ill ask them for their keys and Ill take them home. Im the type who will feel way too guilty if something bad happened and I could have done something to stop it. I drive an SUV to parties so that everyone who needs a ride can get one, and if they cant fit, i'll take their keys so they can't leave.

The problem is that not enough parents spend time to show/talk their kids how to properly drink to prevent them from going out of control when they do get access to beer.

Having to wait till 21 to legally buy/drink beer is a long time, seeing everyone else having a good time with beer, and parents strictly forbidding alcohol without explaining/talking just all ads up to the kid getting drunk just cause of all that pressure.

I agree. It's like learning to drive. You don't just give your kid a car as soon as they can get thier licence and say "go nuts", you coach them through it, give them tips and get them lessons so they don't crash or become a problem driver.

I don't think someone that is immature should be able to drink just because they are over the age limit.

I didn't really do any underage drinking at all. Started drinking socially when I was 17, and drinking age here is 18. I used to have beers at home and stuff, occasionally when I was younger.

I never smoked, but I do now, I never did drugs, but I do now. See the pattern? My brother used to do alot of heavy stuff when he was about 16, and he swears that it was good for him, get it out of his system and all that. He knows guys now that were pretty square back in college, and now they're real drug addicts. My two cents anyway.

Drinking alcohol has nothing to do with maturity... I know people in their early 40's who get wrecked and act like idiots (My mother being a good and annoying example.)

Not to say I don't do it... In fact, I love getting drunk because it makes me care-free and happy. Quite the opposite from my normal doom and gloom personality.

I've been drinking alcohol since I was 3 years old. This started with a half diluted glass of wine for Christmas and New Years dinner. Then gradually as I got older I got more and more. When I was around 13 my mum gave me a taste of Whisky and Vodka straight... Both of which made me run to the bathroom and wash my mouth out. Underage drinking is a problem but only when people make a big fuss over it. I don't see any problem with younger teenagers drinking in their own home with friends round. But when parents and non-parents crack down on underage drinking all it does is drives them to street corners, alleys and parks.

There'll always be a way for them to get the alcohol (especially with the sort of culture in the UK) so why not let them drink it in the comfort and safety of their own homes?

Another quick tidbit... For all the kids in the thread saying stuff like "I personally wouldn't drink for the sake of getting drunk. Plain stupidty, just throw some bricks on top of your head and it'll feel the same tomorrow. I wouldn't get high neither, seems pointless to look at flying random colours and forgetting stuff." Don't comment on things you've not experienced. Plenty of time after having a good fun night out (usually getting absolutely smashed) I've woken up with no more than cotton mouth. Although the last time I was out, I did scare myself... I woke up and found I had been sick in my sleep. Way to kill myself... :wall:

My parents let me learn to drink responsibly at home, having a few beers whenever there was a event on or the like. For the most part, this did me loads of good but I wish they had let me go completely overboard under their supervision at least once. The first time I was presented with a 'drink all you can' scenario, I ended up nearly killing myself, making myself look an idiot and thouroughly not enjoying the experience. I wish my parents had exposed me to that in the safety of my own home where they could make sure I was safe rather than let me do it at a party out of curiosity.

All that shows is that maturity has nothing to do with age :P

As a lot of people have said, it's entirely circumstantial. Kids in places like France or Spain are brought up eating at the dinner table with their parents drinking a glass or two of wine. France also has one of the smallest teen-drinking cultures in Europe (trust me, took me ages to find it). Whether or not this is related, i'm not sure, but I think being brought up in a society where alcohol is around and used lets you get to know it gradually is more beneficial than keeping the kids away from a drop of beer until they're 21 and suddenly saying "go for it". That seems a little crazy. A gradual introduction is far better in the long run. As for going out and getting smashed, fine, as long as there's someone around to look after you. It gets a bit risky when no one's sober.

Drugs and smoking? Whatever, i'm not going to impinge on someone's personal liberty because of my personal choices, kids should be made 100% aware of the risks and benefits of both, and then if they are of an age where they can make an educated choice about doing either one then that's fine. They're not for me, but that doesn't mean they're not for everybody.

this reminds me of a time when me and my friend went to a party neither of us have ever drank much so my friend got dared to drink a pint of Absinthe which is illegal here in the UK, [another mate sneaked some from Amsterdam.]

Well anyway my friend got half way through the pint and felt so dizzy and tired that he just fell asleep in the corner, missed most of the party lol.

Common misconception. Absinthe has never been made illegal to import or distribute in the U.K. I usually see a bottle behind/under the shelf in ever off license I go too.

I don't care about it. People and their parents should set their own guidelines and see for theirselves if it works or not. I've been allowed to drink and smoke since I was 'underage'. Smoke from around 11, and drink since 14, and it didn't make me a very bad person. I've stopped smoking and I since a few weeks I only drink in weekends. I wonder if there's a 'right' age for people to ruin their body, but hey, that's only me.

Places like Spain, Italy and France get it right. Introducing wine at meals, watered down from 12 years old and progressing that. They don't have the kind of problems we have now in the UK because of that. I was brought up like that anyway and so don't get quite as drunk (as easily) as many others.

And yeah, absinthe, they sell it bottled in every damn place. I have never seen it sold in a bar though, and it is disgusting anyway. And a pint of it would probably lead to needing your stomache pumped.

With so many trees in the city you could see the spring coming each day until a night of warm wind would bring it suddenly in one morning. Sometimes the heavy cold rains would beat it back so that it would seem that it would never come and that you were losing a season out of your life. But you knew that there would always be the spring as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason. In those days though the spring always came finally but it was frightening that it had nearly failed.

That's really stupid. One pint is about equal to 10 shots. Absinthe usually contains more alcohol by volume than vodka. That's like chugging 10 shots worth of strong vodka... If he had finished the whole pint, he could have died from alcohol poisoning.

Your idiotic and irresponsible use of alcohol is giving the rest of us alcohol-drinkers a bad reputation.

Absinthe is fun, but not something to be taken lightly. In most of Canada it's banned or only legal with low thujone levels.

I've had some good absinthe experiences in Spain, but never more than 2 or 3 shots of it in one night. :| It was very strong...

Absinthe is a lot stronger, it's something ridiculous like 60-80%.

A pint of absinthe is absolutely ridiculous. One shot combined with a night of regular drinking (say, 10 pints) had me absolutely mangled.

Anyway, I rather enjoy all three of the vices in question.

 I wouldn't drink that much on a special occasion. By regular drinking do you mean a night out in town once a week or every/ several nights a week?

Your average friday/saturday night. By regular drinking I just meant what I drink when I'm getting drunk. I don't tend to drink any more than that on special occasions like parties or whatever because I'll be pretty damn drunk off 10 pints anyway. The only times I drink any more are the big ones like Christmas, New Year, my birthday or when I'm abroad with the lads.

I tend to go to the pub about... 3 or 4 times a week I suppose. If it's a weeknight (by 'weeknight' I mean a night I'm not trying to get drunk) I'll just have 2-4 pints.
