How much time do you spend on a post?

Schwarzenegger

Recommended Posts

I don't mean an actual unit of time, but more as in how much effort/thought etc.

I, for one, try to never spend too much time on a post. I like to think of a forum as a conversation (even though it is not, as the exchange of words and ideas can be hours apart whereas in a real time conversation it must be instant.) I like to feel as if it is an instant converstion. I will write what is on my head, of course correcting any errors I may make as I go if I notice them. I am not going to (unless required) spend a large amount of time thinking up a post, planning it, reading it over for any errors, taking out a thesaurus to replace my normal way of speaking with more advanced words that end up looking downright foolish when all packed into a sentence.

This may be a bit contradictory to the first part of my post. I say this because it is not really feasible in a real life conversation to do this. Often time, I simply couldn't care less so I don't reply. Or I find the opponent's argument so flawed that it does not even deserve a response. I may stop caring about a topic altogether, while some may see it as that they won the argument or debate, it is just that wasting any more time and energy on it is not profitable anymore. Either the argument is going in circles or the opponent's skull is so thick that it seems that waht they get from reading your post is what they want, not what you truly are saying (this happens so often!) You just keep explaining it to them in plain English (or whichever language is used on the forum you are posting on) they will still use the same arguments over and over as if they are not even reading your post.

So many times I have written out posts, some long, some shorter. Some took a long amount of time to write, others were just quick replies. Then I will just think to myself, "what am I doing? This isn't worth it. I'm just wasting my time here." and I will click the back button and not submit my post. If I had submitted all my posts I would easily have over 10k posts on every forum I have ever post on. Which would be a mind boggling amount of total posts. To be honest, I'm surprised I haven't already clicked back and ditched this ridiculous idea of a thread. After all, we have all seen that one internet picture about arguing on the itnernet compared to the special olympics, and as sad as it is to say, often times it is very true. Very little other than possibly slight personal satisfaction will come out of participating or even winning an e-fight.

I guess this thread ended up drifting slightly off topic of my original intent... So you can talk about arguing on the internet or how much time you spend on posts :-k

Depends on what type of reply I'm giving, really. If I'm debating something (i.e. that old Marijauna debate with BlueTear) then yes, I will spend a good amount of time on it. And I don't regard it as a waste of time, because it is always productive to develop logic and reasoning skills. And if, as you say, online discussion means nothing, then it is good practice.

And generally, I like to keep my posts considerate of others, so if I'm posting something controversial or disagreeing with someone, I try to keep courteous. 'Tis a good habit. And that can take a bit of time to find the right wording but still say what I want to.

Well yeah it is normal for a longer post to take a longer time to write out. I was looking more for about if you spend a lot of time re-reading, spellchecking, trying to make your post sound smarter, etc. But cool for not making one of those one line quick boost my post count up posts 8-)

I generally spent quite some time on my posts. I don't plan my posts, but I do re-read my posts before submitting and of course correct any mistakes I might have made.

Usually I just start writing down whatever I think about the subject and after that I start re-arranging stuff so it's understandable. Maybe I spent too much time on my posts, but I prefer posts from people that spent too much time on it over what you generally see on the internet.

And I don't think I'll comment on the value of internet debates opposed to real-life debates because it takes too much of my time.

If I'm being an idiot and just messing around, I spend alot of time thinking about the joke and what I'm trying to say. If I am posting a joke, or something dumb, I take time and make it seem good. There are three really bad things in life:

1. A bad joke.

2. A bad delivery to what would be a good joke.

And 3. A bad delivery to a bad joke.

I try to avoid those, so time goes into it.

As for serious posts, I try to get my point across quickly, and concisely. Don't write an essay, get straight to the meat lawl i said meat of your post; your point.

All in all, on jokes, I don't try to think of them, I let them pop into my head and then I do them. If it's a decent joke, it can take around 5 minutes to pull off... And then I edit it numerous times in the minute I posted it to make sure it's good.

If it's a decent length post like this, minus the time I spend writing it, I put in about...I guess 5 minutes of thought. But I think as I write it. That's why my points are strewed all over the place.

Since I wrote this, I've edited this twice, not including this time. I put in a joke, and then took it out. It was a bad one. Damn.

Depends on the thread. If it requires more thought I'll put more effort into it.

and

I reread it quickly before I post, in case it doesn't make any sense. They post-ala-away!

On Topic: As much time as I feel it needs. Hell, sometimes I'll type up a post, and then just exit out, and not post it. It all depends.

I do that too. ;(

An example is the other day, on a topic in the M&M forum. It was about what songs you can play on an instrument.

I've always disliked it when I made spelling errors, as it makes me look stupid to my own eyes. That's why I got a spell checker in Firefox. :)

About trying to sound smart, I rarely spend much time doing it (only when it really is important). But I do try to edit my posts when I see a mistake or something that can be clarified.

That seems similar to me.

In a real life discussion, you either nkow or you don't nkow. You don't have google and the dictionary to help you. You can't go to wikipedia five minutes and then come back trying to pass as an expert on whatever is being discussed.

Internet discussions often seem too artificial. The poster puts way too much thought into his/her or your post.

(no e-brag) but I consider my spelling to be well above average. So the spelling errors I make are usually just typos from typing too fast or sloppily (is that a word?) I absolutely HATE it when people don't know the difference between you're and your, too and to, hole and whole, etc.

Sometimes I will read my post after submitting and then correct spelling errors I may catch or reword something that does not sound as good as it seemed at the time of writing.

Honestly, I think it depends not on the original topic, but on the forum. For example, in Debate Club, I've spent half an hour on one post (it ended up taking a full browser window, lol). However, in General, there isn't so much that's worth discussing in-depth, so my posts sometimes become one-liners or single paragraphs. I do try to put enough into my posts do provoke a little discussion, though.

In the OT, I usually don't spend all that much time on my posts. They're generally either one liners or a paragraph or so long (two or three at most).

Though, in General, in the few times that I pop in, I tend to make my posts extra long and elaborate, generally because I only respond in topics where either a) over half the posters in the thread are morons, or B) there's something deep available to say about the topic at hand. The former is more common than the latter.

Fullmetal Alchemist, you will be missed. A great ending to a great series.

I just write what I think needs to be inputted into the topic. If it's already been inputted, I don't post. Though if it's a topic asking about oneself I'm going to answer. I just check grammar to make sure no ones eyes are strained... :-#

Also, the length, or quantity of the post for me, is only the raw quality stuff, I don't put in the filler crap that I see a lot on other forums. Plus there's tons of variables that give to why I post, or what I post. Different board, forum, topic, topic quality, information given...etc?

Freakin' heaps it's almost safe to say I'd give a dollar per post that hasn't been edited of mine. There isn't many.

Well, it really depends on how many i'm talking to on msn, what i gotta do at home, what music i lissten to (death metal tends to make me spell wrong all the time, thus making me NOT post.)

And it also depends if i'm talking about music, games, comics, accidents, drugs, and yeah.. You get the point.

Edit: Wehn i konw i splell wrods worng i ckech goggle. 8-)

Depends on the post. Generally not much but I can be a bit picky when getting my post right, which can sometimes leave me unhappy because I think it looks crap or I got the wording wrong. I guess I'm just picky sometimes.

As for other posts, well, some of you may have seen my post on global warming citing the scientific journals and those sorts of things - that took a while. Someday, given the right topic, I've got a post which took hours. It was mostly just to satisfy my own inquisitive curiosities on the topic and I found researching it very interesting. There were a few others I did a little reasearch for to get some facts right and sometimes I even do a little research, satisfy my curiosities and just don't bother posting for some reason or another.

Same with me. If it's a topic I enjoy discussing and researching (such as religion, gun violence and drug use) then I'll be more than happy to spend a lot of time in research and writing.

Otherwise, I don't put much effort into the post. :P
