What was your FIRST computer?

Recommended Posts

Let's share the specs of the very first computers we ever owned (or if you were a kid, first computer in your household that you fairly regularly used).

Mine was:

Intel 80386

16Mhz (23Mhz turbo)

640KB RAM

NO Hard Drive

Keyboard (no mouse)

PC beeper (no speakers)

DOS either 3.0 or 4.0 (the old one where it said A> instead of A:\>)

5.25 floppy drive (obviously no CDROM)

No other peripherials (printer, scanner etc)

Kinda scary to think I used to use THAT as a computer... Especially for gaming.

Share yours! :P

When I got home I'll post the specs of the first PC my family had.

Off the top of my head it was something like...

DOS

Windows 3.,11 (it has NEVER crashed :P)

Generic keyboard / mouse

floppy drive

6x cd-room (i think - the original got replaced)

that's about it. Dunno the mhz or ram or hdd so gotta wait.

Many hours spent gaming on that machine. And still do occasionally :P

But the one after that was:

433Mhz P2

12.1GB HDD

192MB RAM

Generic Keyboard

Generic Mouse

floppy drive

28x cd-rw (I think) - originally 16x cd-rom (died a few weeks ago)

hmm... I had a pc very simular to rick.

Windows 3.1 (about the funniest damn windows ever, i used dos instead  [i was like... 4 at the time lmao])

I then did get upgraded later to a "better" machine, and every few years get upgraded again. Amazing on how pc's evolve.

i mean.. 16Mhz pc's out 10 some odd years ago, now we are up to 4Ghz (3.8 maybe, but i keep thinking the 64bit AMD ones are clocked at 4Ghz)

And think about another 10 years  what will we have then?

I can hardly remember anything about it, but its in the closet in this room. Pretty sure the RAM and hard drive #s are correct, not 100% though.

Had Windows 3.1

Intel 386 processor

2MB RAM

400MB Hard Drive

3.5 inch disk drive

5.2 inch disk drive

Some kind of PS/1(2?) mouse

No speakers (had beeps though)

No CD drive

Thats the one I "learned" computers on, used DOS a lot to play games with.

------

The first real one I had was from 1998, 400 MHz PII, 64MB RAM, 10 GB Harddrive, Voodoo Banshee, Win98

I dont think I will ever remember the model or the specs...

But I do remember it was on dial-up.

The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.

In the event that the weighted companion cube does speak, the Enrichment Center urges you to disregard its advice.

Lets see...

It was a windows 95 and we got it on halloween of 98, I can remember my dad setting it up back in my old house. It was still working (slowly) until about a year ago when it suddenly broke.

Also, every few years we get a newwer better computer.

Finally, it is amazing how slow it was. I used to be fine with the dial up AOL I used for internet, but now we have high speed and I can't stand it using anything slower*.

*This is untrue. I can stand it, it is just really annoying and it seems slower now than when it was new when it seemed fast. Just think in the future... high speed internet will be considered slow sometime.

We still have it.

Reality is hundreds of times more beautiful and more interesting than delusions. Fairy tales just tend to be easier to follow than the wonderful intricacies of life.

Why, the Commodore 64 of course! I still have two of em in my basement, no clue if they work any more.

Sorry, but I don't know its specs either. All I know was at the beginning it showed a blue screen, where you type Load "*", 8, 1

Then it would load the 5.25 floppy, and you would type run.

Great computer, classic games. The original Q*Bert, Frogger, Popeye, Mario, and I can't remember what else right now. Awesome computer tho, I was about 3 when I first used it (16 now), so I gues it was about 1992 or so.

Got our first computer in 1992.

386SX 8MHz CPU (16MHz turbo)

2MB RAM

40MB HDD

PC Speaker

Windows 3.0

Has keyboard but mouse broke like back in 1993 so we had to always use the keyboard.

Broke in 1997 but I managed to fix it in 2003 and still works today. :D

Didn't get our next computer until 1999 by the way. :P

I don't remember much about the specs, but I know it was a ~30mhz later overclocked to 50mhz running DOS/Win3.11, but I gave that box away a few years ago. After that I got a 233mhz one with Win95, and I've still got that one somewhere in the basement :D It doesn't work well now though, it's really unstable.

Yupthat's the first we had. I bought that one in WH Smiths Brighton for ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã80 in 1981, and spent 2hrs soldering the thing together using a 1/64th inch soldering iron. Kit form was cheaper even in those days and everyone was a "Hale and Hearty 'Jolly Fellow Player".

Here are my favorite Abandonware sites:

http://www.abandonia.com/

BTW Mods -- as far as I know all of these sites are abandonware-only, and don't support any warez. Sorry if it's still against board rules.

Hey, speaking of games:

1. Carmen Sandiego for commodore 64 was an amazingly fun game, no doubt. Same with Duke Nukem.

2. I remembered playing this game as a kid, but I have no clue what its called. Perhaps some long lost help here?

Description of the game:

Well you had to click on cards to turn over I believe, something like that if my memory serves me correctly. When all cards were turned over, there would be a puzzle. It would contain pictures, like a pic of an eye + candy, to make a whole sentece. Like two heads are better than one. I remember that one clearly.

Now, you also have a time limit to solve the puzzle. Thats all the detail I can really remember, it has been quite a while.

Anyone have a clue?

Thanks,

Bmw
