Is there anything left to do in F2P anymore?

Recommended Posts

So yeah...

I've played this game for three years and been around the block a few times, and with these most recent of updates I can quite honestly say that this game suddenly stopped being fun.

I'm big on runite mining- at least back when there was PKing- and now I find that it's totally boring. Revenants aren't a danger at all to me because their AI is easily exploited to the point that I can walk behind a tree and be totally safe. My hobby has been reduced to the same evil grinding that plagues almost all skills now, and even with ores at 13.3k I can't stand hopping around to mine them, especially with Revenants killing my scout accounts. PKers were the excitement and the danger of my occupation, and with them gone there is nothing left for me to do.

Duel Arena is useless for cash,

Bounty Hunter is useless for fun (and cash, unless you like selling your soul to clans),

Skilling and training combat is boring and I don't understand how you people enjoy it,

and that leaves absolutely nothing to do in F2P. And just what would I be mining runite for anymore anyway? There's no point in raising smithing now. My very first goal on this game was to make runite armor for kind low-leveled players, and now I can't even do that anymore thanks to a pathetic 3k trading limit. 99 smithing is a showcase skill, just like many others; entirely useless and obsolete.

Are you f2p? Have you found some way to have fun anymore these days? Is there any point in continuing?

All these, and Andy Rooney, tonight on Sixty Minutes.

I'm F2P currently and well, I enjoy training the skills in this game :).

Have you tried clan wars? It's really good fun and is a safe mini-game.

I think it's more along the lines of Bounty Hunter minus losing stuff. Never found that sort of thing enjoyable. Maybe it's just me, but somehow clans or big teams in general have always disgusted me.

If you decide to bring food, it's a money-suck, like every other minigame.

I'll admit I'm not F2P, but what you do doesn't have to be profitable or give much exp, if it's fun then it's worth doing (eg. Castle wars). So personally I'd hang out in the duel arena, you don't have to stake, just do it for fun. I'd imagine it'd be something completely different to F2P as it's safe.

Other then that I'd just level up my skills and play clan wars, if you get bored of it all then it's probably worth quitting, F2P is terribly small when you compare it to P2P.

It's Andy Rooney, but it still made me laugh ...have you done quests? although in f2p there aren't that many. Any chance you can go members? Slayer and hunter are fun and all the extra quests are worth the $5/mo in my opinion. Otherwise stick it out and see if summoning is f2p, maybe you can set some summons lose on revenants for fun whilst you mine.

I'm waiting on Summoning and will probably be sorely disappointed.

And no, I'm not going members, since my primary reason for wanting it was the Wilderness PKing there. The rest? Replaceable by other games.

Since F2P is kindof a trail of the game I can understand why you aren't having as much fun. I know you are against P2P or that's how it seems from most of the posts I read of yours so I would either suggest quitting or becoming a member especially with your mining and smithing levels.

See though, that's the thing that disappoints me- I used to find this game fun-! For THREE YEARS!- and then it all gets turned around in the course of a month. I grumbled a lot in that time, sure, but now I really feel like everything has vanished. It's a little like having a pet Rock for three years, grumbling about how it does nothing but keeping it around for one reason or another, and then having someone pick it up and smash it on the sidewalk. Depressing.

If F2P is but a trial, and it isn't fun, then what incentive would I have to get members?

Well the first part:

Members don̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢t just get more monsters: they get the toughest, most dangerous beasts in the game! Killing these vicious creatures comes with rewards, too, and members can get some fantastic items, from dragon armour and weapons to useful training equipment. There are many other ways to get your hands on cool items.

Members can take on RuneScape's toughest boss monsters - the vicious King Black Dragon (level 276), the legendary Dagannoth Kings (303), the slimy Chaos Elemental (305), the creepy Kalphite Queen (333), and the mighty TzTok Jad (702)!

You don't need to be a master monster killer to get new monsters: with over 600 new types of monsters to kill, you're sure to find one (or ten!) at the right level for you.

Add in the Slayer monsters, quest bosses and all the rest, as well as the useful and valuable items you can get to help you, and you'll see just how much more there is to RuneScape.

Another:

Members gain access to a bewildering number of items - over 8000! These range from more types of food right up to impressively strong armour and powerful weapons. To accommodate all these great items, members also get more than six times more bank space than non-members!

Only members get access to dragon armour and weapons, Barrows sets, high-level weapons like crystal bows, granite mauls and abyssal whips, the Seercull, the Ancient Staff, the dragonfire shield, and many more.

If you want to take on the biggest, baddest monsters you'll need the best food and potions to keep your Hitpoints up. Monkfish heal 16, sharks restore 20 and wild pies can replenish 22 (as well as boosting your Slayer and Ranged skills!); Saradomin brew can dramatically boost your Hitpoints and Defence, and super strong weapon poison can weaken even the mightiest of foes!

Almost every update brings new and interesting items into the game. Whether you're interested in weapons to slay your enemies with or tools to help out your skills, there are always new items being added to improve your gaming experience

Another:

Members get access to the whole of RuneScape, which just keeps getting bigger! We̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢re constantly adding new areas and new quests for our members to explore, and many of these come with new ways to train your skills and make money.

The free game only has a fraction of the area of the members̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ version of RuneScape: train your Thieving in Ardougne; race around Agility courses across RuneScape; discover ancient secrets in the Kharidian Desert; explore Meiyerditch while evading vampyres; wander even deeper into the perils of the Wilderness̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâæ

Members get over 100 more quests, with plenty of experience and items on offer for successful adventurers. If you've done Dragon Slayer and think that's as hard as it gets, you might like to try your hand at Desert Treasure, Monkey Madness, Legends' Quest or One Small Favour. These all come with fantastic rewards - ranging from the ability to use dragon scimitars to an entirely new and powerful spellbook.

Not all of the members' quests are so tough, of course, and you can work your way up the difficulty levels, earning experience and winning new items as you go.

More:

Members get more skills, and new skills are being developed all the time. Many of these help out your other skills or are a good way to earn money. On top of that, there are plenty more ways to train the skills you're used to!

From the instant you become a member, you'll gain access to 8 new skills: Agility, Construction, Farming, Fletching, Herblore, Hunter, Slayer and Thieving.

You̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ã¢ââ¬Å¾Ã¢ll get higher-level training options and lots of ways to use your skills to make money. From such simple bonuses as a wieldable harpoon to massive advantages like the ability to fletch your own bows and arrows, you can save time and money and pocket a tidy profit at the same time!

The Construction skill - with which members can build their own house - was released as recently as May 2006, and the most recent new skill, Hunter, was just released in October 2006! In addition to these, there are plenty more skills in development.

More:

The long-awaited Player-Owned Houses feature and the Construction skill to go with it - which lets players build their own house - were released at the end of May 2006 and RuneScape's members loved it from the start. It introduced a whole new aspect to the game, and many, many hours worth of gameplay. Would you like to own a little piece of RuneScape?

A basic starter home can be bought from an Estate Agent for as little as 1,000gp. You can even build your own dungeon or hire a maid or butler to do little jobs for you! When there is so much choice, where do you even start?

There are 19 different room types available to build, allowing you to create a very personalised space. Build it how you want it to look.

Invite your in-game friends around to your house for a friendly duel, a party, or just for a nice, relaxing cuppa and a chat, while sitting in front of a roaring fireplace.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST:

Members get access to all of RuneScape's minigames, which are a great way of making friends in-game. They're open to players of all levels and can involve each of the skills, as well as offering great rewards.

Castle Wars is one of RuneScape's most popular minigames and players of all levels can contribute to their team's success as winning is not just about combat. Will you be skilled enough to earn your gold-with-blue-trim decorative armour set?

There are minigames that cater for most skills: Brimhaven Agility Arena, the TzHaar Fight Cave and Fight Pit (Combat), Gnome Restaurant (Cooking), Fishing Trawler, Shades of Mort'ton (Firemaking and Prayer), Mage Arena, Ranging Minigame, Blast Furnace (Smithing), Pyramid Plunder (Thieving) and more...

Minigames also cater for the few - some only need one person (you!) - and for the many, which can be played by as many people as you can gather in one place at the same time!

Sorry for the double post but I wanted to say more to you, because I actually think you have a point about f2p being boring. I have once logged back into F2P for a week and went around training and pking and doing anything that F2P can do with the areas that are open. I realized that I am not even getting a taste of Runescape had to offer. I am not a Jagex lover and I am not a person that is easily amused, I think there is so much to do P2P that I can't handle every skill. It is amazing being able to do so much more than Rune Armor and hitting 30+ with whips. Taking on huge dragons. I can't keep telling you how much better it is.

If you really want to talk, please add me on runescape name is 777thzapster, I really think you would have 10-20x more fun in Members please add me.

I've seen it all. I'm P2P on and off so I know exactly how you feel. Hang in there, get members, join a clan or do whatever comes to your mind. To be honest I'm not very driven by motivation, just whatever I feel like doing. If I feel like going to BH, I go there. If I feel like killing Moss Giants, I do that.

If you are bored of F2P and you did enough training there to be able to mine runite, I think it's time to subscribe.

well skilling is kinda fun, i dont mind it and you should try out bh and clan wars its really fun

I'll be honest with you. I think all three of those suck.

And zap, I already know what's in members. I've been playing RuneScape for three years and have been a regular at a member-inhabited IRC. The point is that it isn't worth it for me. There are better games out there: What this game used to offer me is gone. I can replace questing with a better RPG; the multiplayer element with an FPS or something similar. I've no doubt that some of members is fun, but I don't want to join after I've been essentially slapped in the face.

I'm F2P (and I try keeping my stats updated in my signature), but plan on giving membership at least one month of my time...eventually.

As of the date of this posting (Jan. 06, 2008) I am trying to get to level 50 in all F2P levels. Maybe you think of "level grinding" as boring, but I look at stuff like that as a challenge.

It's true, that once I accomplish those tasks, it leaves an empty feeling rather than a satisfactory one, but that's because there is always something more to do.

Once my PayPal account kicks in, I will have the option to join, but if I get to level 50 first, I'll probably end up setting 55 as the new bench mark level for all skills...maybe even 60. That would mean joining much later.

I do see what you mean, though. There really isn't a challenge for me anymore. I started venturing out further and further into the wilderness DARING to be PK'd for a little while. Other times, I'd carry some nice stuff out there and let myself by killed just to give some idiot a big jackpot. Then I came up with the levels thing and have had my time consumed by it. It started with trying to get access to all the guilds, but once I got to level 60 mining, I felt like I had nothing left in the game.

I've been saving the Dragon Quest, because I'm afraid I'll be TOTALLY bored once I get that one out of the way.

Well, try the levels thing on for size. Try maxing out your F2P experience as fast as you can in mining (2 million, right?). Set a date and stick to it, revenants or not.

BTW, maybe you could give some tips on here on how best to avoid them (like a certain path you take everytime or things you do that you've found that work) because it seems like that's the new thing that bothers people about the wilderness.
