Translation Team Leader (Portuguese)

Jagex Ltd, one of the worlds largest independent computer games studios, is looking for a translator with excellent project management experience and leadership skills to be heavily involved in the creation of a Portuguese language version of its products, including the legendary MMORPG RuneScape.

Jagex develops and publishes PC browser games internationally, with over six million active players. The company is built on its industry-leading bespoke technology and the Portuguese Team Leader would work closely with the Localisation Manager to plan and manage the localisation of RuneScape into Portuguese. The project currently encompasses over 2 million words.

This is a great opportunity for an enthusiastic Portuguese Team Leader, who will be responsible for managing major parts of the translation project, leading the Portuguese Translation Team, defining the overall creative direction of the translations, as well as liaising with an external team of translators and testers.

Key duties include:

* Managing major parts of the translation project and its deliverables;

* Leading a team of four translators and one localisation tester;

* Define the overall creative direction of translations;

* Accurately reporting project progress and team performance to the Localisation Manager;

* Liaising with external translators and testers;

* Monitoring individual and team quality and productivity, identifying skills gaps and developing talent;

* Establishing a creative and productive environment through effective team coaching;

* Ongoing appraisal of team members individual performances, helping them to work towards their own continuous personal development;

* Leading by example through commitment, passion and professionalism towards Jagex, the RuneScape universe and the gaming industry as a whole.

* Real interest in computer games/RPGs/MMOs and good understanding of the target market.

Qualifications:

* Translation degree or related subject.

Also useful:

* Game or fantasy translation experience;

* Scripting or programming experience;

* Experience with proprietary translation tools.

Details:

Salary

£very competitive (negotiable, depending on experience), plus excellent benefits package including annual bonus, private healthcare, gym membership and other benefits.

Location

Cambridge, UK. Candidates must be able to work in Cambridge or relocate if offered the position.

Also interesting is the factoid that RuneScape encompasses over 2 million words (or is "the project" all of Jagex's works?).

From an old Jagex recruitment document:

Translation Team Member- Translating the RuneScape game into another language. We are currently translating the game into German, with French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Polish and Portuguese all planned for 2006. You need to be a native speaker of the particular language, with excellent English skills. A passion for computer games and an interest in the fantasy world is recommended.

Never quite happened for 2006, but subsequently they have announced French and Portuguese - so it seems that next could be Italian, Spanish, Dutch or Polish.

In England advertisements state the annual salary,meaning £24,000 per year (£2,000/2,500 per month). This amount does not take into account taxation and National Insurance, so the amount brought home is significantly lower.

For reference: That's ~47,000 United States Dollars, which is still a pretty good amount.

Haha, but you know Swedes are the best in Europe at English apart from the UK :P Mainly because of no dubbing on television (only kid's shows) and early English education.

But yeah, it's great :) Now RuneScape might get an audience from parts of South America too. Wonder if French will come before this though, since many found evidence about it.

Oh and also, I remember reading some interview with the new development leader (the one who had worked for ebay and stuff before) who said they might try to get Malaysia and/or India as an audience for RuneScape too. Wonder if there will be RuneScape in Malaysian or something? :D

Yes, that sig was annoying.

Fact: everyone at Jagex is underpaid for what they do, trust me.

Note how Jagex states that runescape is "legendary".

More like infamous.

I agree.

I don't know why they are doing such languages like these, Dutch, or even Korean would have been better. As Korea has a larger gaming area than any other language they could translate into.

I think it'll be a looong time. They still don't have someone hired, and even after that, it may take a year or more to translate the vast amounts of text in Runescape. Wouldn't this also require the launch of more servers? (just wondering).

Who told you this?

None of the scandinavian countries dub television and all have early english educations. And to be more than fair you should know that Finland has the highest average in final-exam scores in all of Europe, not Sweden. I'm not finnish btw but I like getting facts straight.

Ooooh, and I dare say Wales Ireland and Scotland also beat Sweden ;)

Fact: everyone at Jagex is underpaid for what they do, trust me.

I think its safe to call that an internet-fact. Because to say that, you'd have to know what exactly everyone in Jagex are doing and what the normal pay is for the job they are doing. The real fact is, that working in computer game development is not a job you should take if you are expecting a normal salary paid out on the first of every month. Why? Because like alot of other businesses, the employee's paycheck is dependant on the monthly income. The monthly income has basically only gone up since 2001, which you can check yourself since by law all companies economy is open to general public.

I suppose when you wrote everyone you also meant Paul and Andrew Gower, who are both in the top 200 of UK's richest bachelors under 30 and in the bracket of 600-700th richest men AT ALL in all of UK. (Last recorded the brothers were worth £113 million or US $217 million combined)

So with that said I find it really hard to believe that Paul and Andrew can get away with pocketing that much cash while at the same time keeping those rumoured underpaid employee's happy. Have you even been to Jagex.com and read their employee policy and what they do for their employees? Did you know that Jagex Corp has yearly been voted in the top 100 of UK's most employee friendly companies? These, my friend, are real facts. But I guess what you wrote is also a fact, since its on the internet, right? ;)

"Europe at English apart from the UK"

Last time I checked, Wales, Scotland and North Ireland are all part of the UK.

I suppose Ireland is the best then.

All 3 have their own flag and their own languages, they just keep "british english" as a second mother tongue.

And I'll bet a far larger percentage give a @!¤# about the queen of england too.

Isn't Northern Ireland the section which broke free of rule btw ? I can never remember. I'm not irish I dont care :lol:

Jeez... Don't take everything I said literally, I obviously meant the UK as Scotland, Ireland, etc. I'm sorry, I won't offend the other countries by calling them the UK anymore :roll:

Anyways, I thought it was quite common knowledge, but I searched and found a random link: http://www.dn.se/DNet/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=147&a=239642

It's in Swedish, but it's easy to get the point; a survey was made in different countries of Europe and Sweden and Norway came "first place".

What's the big deal #-o

It's a bit of a pattern, all of the languages Runescape is translated in/ is planned to be translated in are the first languages of many countries, so Portuguese was a brilliant choice. =D>

So, it's German, then French, then Portuguese... they have a big job on their hands. Let's see how French goes first though.

Finally... my main language is here!

This is going to take a long time though, we have some pretty tough words... but I'll love playing it on Portuguese.

For all the haters, let me tell you that it is spoken a lot ingame, and there's many portuguese-speaking people playing runescape.

So... in my opinion, logical and good choice.

Haha, nice find? 8-)

I hope whoever gets the job enjoys translating.. They'll be stuck otherwise :shock:

Doubt that Jagex would employ them if he/she didn't enjoy it. Why would you go in for a big job like that if you didn't enjoy what you had to do? :?
