4Chan

I'm just making this thread to see TIF'ers views on this infamous place.

For those of you who don't know, here is some info from a wikipedia artice on 4Chan:

4chan is an English language imageboard based on the Japanese imageboard Futaba Channel. This imageboard is based primarily around the posting of pictures (generally related to anime, manga, and popular culture) and their discussion. The Guardian describes it as "at once brilliant, ridiculous and alarming."

The site and its userbase have received attention from the media for a number of reasons, including posts sporting terrorist threats against schools and sports stadiums, attacks against Hal Turner on his Internet shows and distributed-denial-of-service attacks against eBaum's World and taking part in Project Chanology.

Many internet memes have originated there, including lolcats and rickrolling.

/b/

The "random" board, /b/, is based on the Nijiura board of Futaba Channel. It is by far 4chan's most popular board, as confirmed by statistics released by 4chan staff and by the publicly available post count. As of March 27, 2008, /b/'s post count has surpassed 60,000,000 posts whereas most of the other boards have yet to break 250,000. Only eleven other boards (/a/, /co/, /v/, /k/, /m/, /r/, /s/, /h/, /tg/, /gif/ and /g/) have accumulated more than 1,000,000 posts (/a/ and /v/ each having over 9,000,000). After /b/'s 31,000,000th post was made on June 16, 2007, it took just 9 days to accumulate another 1,000,000, meaning /b/'s posting rate had attained an average of more than 111,000 posts per day. Certain post numbers, such as 12345678 and 22222222, and the aforementioned milestones, are sought after, with a large amount of posting taking place to "GET" them.

/b/ is known to officially have a "no rules" policy, save for a ban on certain illegal content, such as child pornography and invasions of other websites, both of which are inherited from site-wide rules. This "no rules" policy applies to administrator and moderator actions as well, meaning that users may be banned at any time, for any reason, including none.

The humor of /b/'s many users, who refer to themselves as "/b/tards", is often incomprehensible to newcomers and outsiders, and is frequently characterized by intricate inside jokes and black comedy.

Here is a quiz to see how 4Chan you are: http://www.gotoquiz.com/how_4chan_are_you

In this thread you can post appropriate 4chan images, discuss 4chan horror stories from your visits there and question the intelligence of 4channers :? Also, if you've never heard fo 4Chan you can ask questions about it on this thread.

Well I imagine that the iq of the average 4channer is well above 100, it's just a place where people like to use the twisted side of their minds in anonymity. It's definitely not a place for the average dope who spends his evenings watching the emmys, listening to Britney Spears's latest songs, and reading up on Paris Hilton's latest attention seeking tactics.

only 'cause they all got kicked off SA.

Actually you're right. A lot of people who are banned from SA tend to be *channers. What's your point? :P

Frankly, the 13 year olds mostly stuck to Fark. The pedo thing was correct 6 years ago..., thanks to ADTRW. Ah, glorious forum drama.

best. acronym. evar.

Especially since none of the mods like that forum even a little, they just made it to stop people from posting anime crap in the other forums.

I was thinking about making a thread about the website, I was considering listing all the meme's i could and having people contribute. But not just 4chan memes

the thing about that place is, dont get offended. If you are offended when people talk negatively about: religion, countries, race, gender, sexual orientation just simply avoid the place

Because the majority of people that play Runescape are under 18, I don't think that 4chan is really an appropriate topic. Even the rules off the main site say so:

#2 If you are under the age of 18, or it is illegal for you to view the materials contained on this website, discontinue browsing immediately.

There ranges everything from pornography to beasitality to gore to racial slurs to sexism. This is really not a place for most Runescape players.

Note: If you are over 18, go for it! I'm just saying that as Runescape is for people aged THIRTEEN and up, there may be a lot of players in that age range (13-17) that should not be viewing 4chan.

I got a 12 year old to go to /y/ and /hc/. (Yaoi and hardcore) do I get a cookie?

no, your just the cancer that is killing /b/

[hide=possibly offensive, sorry if i didn't get all of it.]TL; DR: 4chan veteran explains it for the newbies in the hope that it will at least partially help to improve the site.

4chan (4channel)is an image bard based on, and inspired by, 2channel (2chan.net) which is a japanese image board. It is the largest english speaking image board of its type. It is a website designed for adults only. The culture of 4chan is a deeply complicated one. It is japanese themed and inspired. The boards were originally organised by letter, a b c and so on. /b/ was and remains the "random" board, which is by far the most visited board on the site, receiving as it does over 100,000 posts a day. However, it is nothing remotely like or related to gaia. It really is an adult web site. The long running joke that has developed over the past 3 or so years is that everybody on the website, (well, on /b/ anyway) whislt ADULTS, and reasonably intelligent ones at that, engage in moronic activities verging on the utterly stupid. The joke being that everyone acts like the same [developmentally delayed]ed individual. WHILST KNOWING THAT THEY ARE NOT. The joke is in the delivery.

The humour was fairly unique, and rediculously complex and almost impossible to follow as a newbie. The problem that has blighted 4chan in recent years (and which really started to kick in about 2 or so years ago) is that newcomers to the site, usually heading to /b/ to see what the fuss is all about, see the [developmentally delayed]edness of people acting like 14 year olds, and then start thinking that indeed, the website is a place for 14 years olds to hang out and be [developmentally delayed]ed. This in turn lead to masses of underage users flooding the site. Recent media attention makes this problem increase. Eventually, so many 14 year olds end up browsing the site that the original adult userbase has been overshadowed by the masses of underage people who have now turned the joke inside out, and the site has now literally become a place for 14 year olds to be [developmentally delayed]ed.

There are several problems with this. The first is that all the old populace of 4chan start whining about this very fact. The second is that the quality of posting completely degrades. The old rules were that you would have to lurk for ages before posting. And you actually would, because the in-jokes were so obscure and closely knit that lurking was the only way you had of knowing what the hell was going on. People now don't bother, and so many new users means that the original point of the board (an extention of a something awful sub forum celebrating a [developmentally delayed]ed sense of humour crossed with a love for japanese animation) has been wiped clean.

This is a direct result of the board acheiving widespread popularity and new users from sites like this. So now, rather than massive photoshop contests (similar to photoshop friday on something awful) or well written stories, either humerous, or completely obscene, written by adults, the board is flooded with people posting pictures of themselves, reposting old, long dead memes (memetics; the idea of something catching on to the popular masses, think the stuipid "whasssup" budweiser adverts... idiots shouting it at their freinds and so on) that are no longer funny, people taking the idea of anonymous/legion seriously (protip: it's a joke) people reposting threads such as "you raff you ruse" without sometimes even knowing what that means, and generally forgetting that 4chan is an IMAGEBOARD and that posts should be all about interesting/freaky/funny/downright disturbing photo's, drawings and photoshops.[/hide]

Looks like somebody stumbled into the wrong place. A lot of us here in OT don't play Runescape anymore..

Here's the thing buddy, this is the internet. All I have to do is say I'm 18 and I can view whatever the hell I want. Oh no, I'm under 18 by 3 months and the law says I can't see people naked! I've looked at porn since I was 13 years old. The law hasn't stopped me (or a lot of people for that matter) from doing a lot of things. My point is no matter what the law says there are a lot of us who will completely disregard it. If you're offended by the stuff on 4chan, you're in for a big surprise when you start getting around on the internet.
