The IRC to me is quite broad, and vague when actually considering 1 on 1 conversations between friends, which is what those instant messengers are about, even if they run on the same basis as the IRC, or are basically the same thing.

Then again let's try and get 10 random kids from High School to actually use the IRC effectively.

MSN for the win, has the most options, customizable layouts, very use friendly, nice GUI, and it has good customer service. The others hardly compare if you ask me.

Though IRC is better than MSN technically, but MSN is better than the IRC because of simple popularity if you ask me, and that's what counts.

I use msn because it's the most popular.

Some friends are like, 'oh yeah add my aim address' etc, and no-one can because we don't have it.

Irc is good for group chats.

I mumble. Thus, I don't like communication verbally. I rarely use phones, only if someone calls me or if it's really important. (And my cell phone is a last resort) I can talk to face-to-face, but eh, unless I'm already with that person (For example, at school), I'll stick to e-mail/IM.

So...A while ago, before Gmail was out, I used Yahoo!, for mail and for IM. But after Gmail, Google Talk...It's just too much easier, being able to chat out of the actual e-mail website.

I've never really been a fan of MSN or AIM, though I may consider it if I get a new laptop, I have a few friends who use them.

I also use Xfire, you might want to add that to your poll (If possible). It's perfect for while you game, which is quite often for me and my friends.

Meh, the smilies on MSN are only surpassed in ugliness by the new smilies on this forum. I'm not liking it so much, but it sure beats Yahoo. My absolute favourite is Google Talk, though. Simple and nice is all I ask for. Too bad most people don't use it.

imho multi-functionality isn't something i like. it tends to focus on one thing more than the other and then some features become neglected or ALL the features it might have had don't make it cause "they're too hard to do" or "people aren't really going to use it to their full extent." things like that make me say "then why bother making a program that can access ALL THOSE without full feature access ?"

I use different programs for different things.

Everyone from my school uses MSN, so that's what I use for general talking to friends.

I have GMail and I sometimes use Google talk to talk to my mom who is at work and doesn't have MSN.

I use the new Facebook chat thing to talk to people I have on facebook but I dont have on MSN.

I use IRC for group chats.
