So why are people not buying/selling as much now?

Featured Replies

A few days ago, each time I mined 300, 500, 1000 or however much coal, I would go to the GE, put it up at market price and ding, there's my cash. Suddenly, one fine day, I was about to sell 500 more coal but they wouldn't sell for the hell of it. I put them on minimum price - no sales! It was around 10pm GMT+1 when I put them up and they didn't buy a single piece. The day after, 10am same time zone, I got the message and my coal was sold for minimum price - I think I didn't get any money back. But not just that! I was about to failcurse. I purchased 3,6k bodies, easily, for maxprice. But when it came to the 7,2k waters, initially I didn't get a single rune! This didn't use to be so before. After about 15 mins I got about 1000-ish waters to work with till I got more. The day after I already had all the waters, again. Is there any logical explanation for this though? Or just dumb luck?

Yes, elaborate please.

But it is just luck sometimes, there will always be high point and low points, just give it time.

2 likely causes:

Speculators - Players like myself who buy vasts amounts of an item for the sole purpose of later selling those items for a profit without ever using them. We cause artificial shortages in markets which seriously manipulates prices when done in significant amounts and messes with JAGeX's system. An analogy would be speculators in America's oil stock markets causing oil prices to be inflated because speculators have no intention of ever using the stocks for anything other than resale profit.

G.E. trade time limit - All items on G.E. have a limit on how many can be bought or sold per X amount of hours. These limits usually range from 10k to 100k for most items, several items have more extreme limits. Refer to the player-made-guide forums for more details. Also, there is a time limit between the last item you sold and the first of that same item that you can buy. For example, yesterday I bought full Armadyl armor for Fight Caves and then put them back up on the G.E. Even at lowest price, it could not sell until 4 hours after I bought it. Some players would panic and leave their item on min price in hopes of selling. Smart players put it on market price and wait patiently, like me.

Thanks for the answer, smart person. Please enlighten me of the inferior, non-merchanting race though - why would anyone rig water runes or anything that's in high supply all the time, regardless of demand? That's the only thing I could attribute your first point to, as it doesn't explain the coal problem - and nor does the second reason, because I don't remember buying any coal for a while now.

Also, mess around with the prices too much and Jagex will start dictating the economy more and more, I'd say. This is why I don't do merchanting myself, it's like sailing to me; discounting the poor joke, it's way too risky and a single ill turn of events may get you broke.

Artificial shortages would explain why you couldn't buy runes. I apologize if I wasn't clear.

Regarding the suggestion of JAGeX tightening their grip on the economy, such a fix would be very welcomed. It's hard to believe how few people are currently abusing the G.E. as it exists today - it's so easy to make money from money. I suppose in time more players will wake up and smell of the coffee of easy money and JAGeX will finally have to fix their system. However, despite numberous guides on this website and others, very few people (relatively speaking) are actively abusing the G.E. today. Without a fix soon, the economy's ruin will proportionally increase as more money is being dumped into this broken system, either by an increase in speculators or simply richer merchants.

Lol. Don't flatter yourself. I don't care how much money you have, you can not put a dent on the Coal market. I have a bit over 300m atm with which I merchant. I don't pretend to affect the market at all. Period. End of story. I am NOTHING compared to how much raw resources available currently.

Its random. Or its not random, and the economy is reacting to some unseen force. Either way, it doesn't matter unless people panic.

Well, item lending has affected the economy somewhat. Now, people are renting sara swords/zamorak spears for waterfiend tasks, as an example. Now there are less sellers/buyers, because the sellers have found it more profitable to lend out items (I myself have made 200k+ in the last few days from lending out my zammy spear alone)

That is definitely one of the forces that might be acting on our economy. I haven't played for about 2.5 weeks, as I have been in Europe. I was not aware that item lending was out already.

The Grand Exchange database was a double-edged sword. We can now view the prices of items without even logging in. However, with the trend feature, we can also overreact at any small price drop.

I was never a fan of g/e. many prices are now way out of porportion because of it. the prices change on g/e based on the quantity sold. that's not right. if prices are to be based on that they also have to be based on demand. ppl aren't buying/selling as much probably because the prices of the good they normally sell are dropping (I.e. nature and law runes). its the g/e's fault because the price system isn't working correctly so ppl done wanna buy/sell for fear of making a bad choice and possibly losing money. that's my take on all this

I can't buy Super Attack Potions (3) anymore, no matter how long or what price I leave them on. I had to make my last 100 I was going to use for Slayer :|

I think it is all based on luck. I have only recently started to merchant because I find merchanting easier with the GE because I can merchant while doing other things waiting for the time limit to go away. On some days, I find it easy to buy and sell, on other days it takes forever, it all depends on who is online and who is buying what.

1. Water runes are only sold at the max (16 gp).

-Every Ancienter needs them, people always put in offers for 1-25k worth of waters, they literally TRICKLE (like water =]) in.

People dont sell water runes at the rate of other runes such as fires, minds and airs. Most probably because the required amount of time to runecraft water runes is too high to be worth slightly more than other runes. Or perhaps the xp gain isnt worth the time, so much more common items are runecrafted such as air runes.

Items used in the smithing skill can sometimes be hard to sell. For example, I went to the aviansies and got 408 bars. I went to the Grand Exchange and tried to sell them. Nothing. Put them on at lowest. Still nothing. After maybe 8-9 hours they sold. So it is probably just down to bad luck.

. . . you are taking G.E way too much for granted, remember before G.E it would take ages to sell stuff, if you went to one place and got an instant sale (without previous communication) then it would be incredibely rare, I think alot of people forget that they are getting instant buys and sales on items from the G.E, if you are unlucky and don't get something just wait because it's very likely somebody just bought the stuff you wanted to buy and that there is nothing wrong with the market.

Lowgravity, I want to be just like you. But...I never will be as 1337 as you. :(

I think theres some sort of check on the items you sell over time, so if you sell lots of an item your priority in the selling queue goes down, I have no facts to prove this just what I've observed when selling many things over a couple of weeks (example: several thousand of addy bars 500 or so at a time - first couple thousand went straight away then a delay of maybe 12 hours selling the rest)
