Western food in eastern countries?

Well. Last night I was brushing my teeth, and suddendly I had to think about food and the eating culture in Asia. I came to think of that because here in Holland, and I think in more countries in the Western world, there is a Chinese or Japanese restaurant on every streetcorner (yea, I'm overreacting). Do you eat 'chinese' every day? Or do you eat a lot of western food as well? Do you have cooked potatoes with butter sauce no it, steak and carrots how about vla for dessert? And how is it with your restaurants? Is Asia stuffed with western restaurants, or completely full with Asian restaurants? I'm really curious. And I would bet my life on it that now that I have asked this question, there's more people who want to know about this!

[edit]Changed the topic title to make this a little more serious.

Hey, let's google everything. This way we don't need to have a conversation anymore! Imagine all the fun on the off topic forum!

I laughed, then realized I wish to know the answer to this question as well.

Second that.

Your avatar is awesome, where is it from?

It's true, every culture in Asia is different. You won't get the full advice on this thread. There are some things that just can't be made into threads.

Lawl.

I'll give the answer for someone living in Taiwan, since that's where I am. Yes, it's basically Chinese food every day, all three meals. There are fast food places like McDonald's, which the locals seem to be very fond of. (I find that they're more crowded than Chinese restaurants) Otherwise...Not really. There are a ton of small Asian restaurants, probably family owned. I remember going to French and Italian restaurants here, but they're rare.

Rice with most meals, and I have no idea what vla is.

Yay Asians.

God forbid we start talking about the different Asian cultures. :|

Yes, nothing's going to come out of this.

No, I'm not agreeing with you. I was being sarcastic. You can't search Google for information and stories about Asian life. Well, you can, but it's much better to hear it first-hand from some of the people here. We're probably not going to hear about every single Asian culture, but we can hear something.

If there's a 50 page thread on the excistence of God, why couldn't there be one aobut Asian eating habits. Let's drop this arguement and lets see what comes from this thread. Alright?

Penguingeek, you say all three meals are chinese. What kind of food do you have for breakfast and lunch then? Have you got special rice snacks or something? Or a 'bapao' bread, sometimes I have a rice roll with chicken at the market, it's called lumper/lemper?

kenshinjapan, what's your problem? Don't you agree that first-hand experience is a much better way of getting information than reading an article somewhere?

At least it is more fun, having a conversation with other people. Instead of reading dry pieces of text on the iternet, without any interaction. Of course we won't get the 'full picture' in this thread. That's not what I am looking for, I just want to get a bit of a general idea.

Just as Abby said, lots and lots of rice. Every Filipino meal involves rice in some way (even breakfast) Even the McDonalds here serve rice. Funny. I've never actually got to try it but my relatives say there's McRice Burger round where they live :?

McRice Burger? What is that, a patty of compressed rice on a bun? If so, that's hilarious!

They also serve spaghetti

I am from India, lived there for 8 years. The food is pretty indian over there. You wont find western food anywhere unless you go to big cities. Restaurants (not fasst food) have both types of food there although moost ppl prefer the indian food. Oh and pizza is sorta big over there. Indians are addicted to it lol...but if you are not from a big city then pizza is unknown.

As for what indian food is...it is pretty much rice with hundreds of kinds of gravy (curry). There is also yogurt rice which is delicious. Then there is a whole bunch of food for breakfast that is made of special rice and flour. And as with every solid food, there is a liquidly slush of curry/gravy that goes along with it. Kinda like a sauce but with chunks.

Aw, why change the title?

Penguingeek, you say all three meals are chinese. What kind of food do you have for breakfast and lunch then? Have you got special rice snacks or something? Or a 'bapao' bread, sometimes I have a rice roll with chicken at the market, it's called lumper/lemper?

I guess breakfast is pretty similar to western breakfasts. They have cereal here, bread, the usual. Except Chinese bakeries have some great stuff that you probably can't find in America/Europe. And I'm sure some people have rice cakes or whatever every day.

Lunch is actually pretty similar to dinner, now that I think about it. Just a bit less.

Also, the McDonald's here have fried chicken and this red bean thing that I like. (No rice though) I'm pretty sure they don't have those in America, not sure about Europe though. Also, guava and starfruit...They're hard to come by in Massachusetts at least, but they're everywhere here. For the record, red beans are like...The reputation of Taiwan. Best red beans evar.

Just think of going to a Chinese restaurant every day for lunch and dinner. That's basically it, I guess. (Taiwan is kind of trying to westernize though, especially Taipei. It's not as traditional as other places)

And I don't see anything wrong with this thread. Sure, it'll eventually come down to "Rice is everything", but by then it'll probably be dead.

This is sort of off-topic, but it kind of relates to asian customs I think (food is customs too, right?). Why do many, if not all, Indian women have those big red dots on their foreheads? Does it have something to do with anything?
