rook_2222
(If there is a topic that is the same as this one, please lock this thread) rem·i·nisce - to recall past experiences, events, etc. ^ For people that don't know what it means  ^ So why do we? Is it because the old times were better? Or we like to think back when things were more simple/ fun? Maybe to have something to talk about? Or is it because we want to act like we've played since party hats were dropped? :^o  I always reminisce, even for non-Runescape things. It seems like whatever is changed, people like to talk about how it was "back then." People usually like to reminisce about how things used to be better and why/how they're worse. In my opinion, I think we reminisce because we like talking about how something used to be and how it is now. Discuss. P.S. This is my first topic I think I've made for discussion, and I thought this was something good to talk about. Please don't flame/shame me if this thread has been done before me  F2P for life :D
Zox
When you're talking to someone in real life, you reminisce like 90% of the time. What else is there to talk about than other things and things that happened in the past?
Mike_Ike111
Because RS2 sucks more than it did yesterday, and will continue to suck more each day after the other. The reason behind this is that each day you get more xp, and each day it becomes harder to level. Once you get to the point where leveling a skill takes 5 hours, you start to realize how much better it was 3 years ago when you played with ease and joy, rather than grinding on the same thing for ever. baalboy5
People do it because they hate change. So they talk about how great it was and how it isn't now. Don't you know the first rule of MMO's? Anyone higher level than you has no life, and anyone lower than you is a noob. People in OT eat glass when they are bored.

I completely disagree with that. Rs continues to get funner every day, with new updates and content being added all the time. elit9
It's human nature and it completely transcends RS. Concerning happy memories, we tend to remember mostly only the very best details about those memories. Thus, when juxtaposed with stark reality, where we're probably observing both the good & bad sides of things more evenly, the good times of the past usually seem to be really great compared to present times. Also, oftentimes in the past many experiences are brand/relatively new, and sort of like adventures - this augments the positive allure of good memories, I think. Cavi
I think its because we hate when they change things without asking us. I liked Pest Control but they changed it, so we reminisce how they updated something but for the worse. Proud owner of a Questcape

We're just so set on the idea that: Past > Present. But the fact at hand is that when we reminisce, we barely ever think about the bad things - only the good ones. reaper88888
This simplifies it a little, but basically 'because back in my day, if we wanted to eat, we had to walk twenty miles through deep snow, uphill both ways!'. We want to believe, and have others believe that we are more important, better, stronger or something because things were 'more difficult' when we were doing it. The purpose behind this is to 'prove' that our lives had meaning. Another reason we like to reminisce is because we will often believe (regardless of the truth) that things used to be better 'There used to be fewer idiots playing RS', 'Bread used to only cost ten cents a loaf', and the like. So basically because we as a species like to complain and boast. But there I go again, spreading my silly opinions... ChaosFlames
The person above me pretty much hit the nail on the head. For me, when i reminisce about my early days in RS, i usually think back to the time where some items were insanely expensive, and now they're practically worthless (D med). Back when my friends used to play, back when i had to grind for hours to make money. Now its, go to GWD, get a drop, bam your rich. But yea, change is inevitable, so theres nothing we can do but move on. Lowgravity
Because people don't know what they've got till it's gone, so we reminisce on the past just like in however long we will reminisce on the present. Feel free to ignore my post if you don't like what it says. : Heh, partially true... But in RS1, you really had to work about 10x harder to gain skills  Mining for example... For every swing, you had to open inventory, select pick-axe, click use, choose rock, and it could even fail to extract ore. Heck, for a long time, there was only one adamantite rock in the entire game (in the desert scorpion pits) which took multiple minutes to re-appear.. Now all you do is click a rock and read a forum for 5 minutes and check for possible random events until your inventory is filled up..
reaper88888
You're right, in some cases the remembered difficulty is actually accurate.. But I think that that would still be the exception rather than the rule. :P There is no meaning or truth in life but that which we create for ourselves. Den
When i think back to the "old days"... ...i think why the [cabbage] didnt i take more pictures. I love looking back at old screenshots from 2005-2007. I just really wish i could remember those days better because tbh, the only thing i remember from my first year as a free player is the halloween event of 05. This i remember because i took a picture of every chat head and every item and all of the area the event was going on at. ........::::: Rainy's YouTube Channel - Rainy's Twitter - Rainy's Facebook - Rainy's DeviantArt - Rainy's Tumblr - Rainy's Tip.It Profile :::::......... I think you have Mining confused with Woodcutting or Fishing... Unless you were talking about Ess. But Mining is still definitely one of the harder skills to train. Was so fun, stared gaining so many levels, went from 1100 to almost 1400 total in a few months. Lots of friends to hang out with and such. Was the most fun time i had on runescape. Skill_Caster
I agree with the above said. "Back then", you'd never been to Taverly, nor did you know what it was. You leveled up by mixing a single potion, killing a single goblin, or crawling through a single course. The day you got members you ran to those gates near Falador, the only way into the great mysterious realm you knew nothing about. You began jumping up and down with excitement as you found a poisoned iron dagger, not only because iron was your average type of metal and you didn't even know poison existed. I could ramble on and on. I don't think I ever have any more fun than playing a new video games...especially at Christmas. Even being a teenager sometimes that feeling you got when you were younger that fills you with happiness manages to reach you sometimes. I remember when I first played Halo. At the Halo 2 era, my friend wanted to show me it, but I didn't really take an interest. Then, when I ran over to my friends house to try this new "Xbox 360" he got, I was amazed by Halo 3. Staying up late at nights with friends playing Guitar Hero 3, laughing together as we all three miserably failed Through the Fire and Flames on Expert. The same goes for Runescape. My friend was the first to get members, and watching him venture out into the uncharted members world was so exciting. I can't remember times more fun than that. Can anyone? tintin113
This is really more of an Off Topic discussion because people reminisce in Runescape for the same reasons as they do in real life, because we can remember things, we do. If we remember things being better than they are now then it gives us reason to worry about what's going on.
