The RS Stereotype

Oh, and KillThomas, the fact that you're unable to cope with your friends poking fun at you is a sure sign of insecurity (read: lack of confidence).

Again you're assuming too much. I don't recall saying I would be un able to cope with it. But let me ask you this. Would you rather announce to people that you play runescape, and have your friends poke fun at you, or would you rather just not tell anybody, and not have your friends poke fun at you? The answer seems blatently obvious to me.

Nobody said anything about annoucing. I know I don't expect you, me, or anyone else to get on top a desk and shout "I play RuneScape!", but if someone asks you if you do play RuneScape, why wouldn't you say yes?

[/hide]

Ok, I get what you're saying. But the only reasons I see why people would ask me would be if they either play them selves, in which case I certainly would not deny it, or if the person already knows, in which case there is no point in denying it.

Also, when I say announce, I don't mean standing up on top of a desk and shouting it too the world. What I do mean is if I'm near people having a conversation about the game, I'm not going to jump in and join the conversation, or make any indication that I play.

FFS leave him alone, you guys need to reread what he wrote, although I will agree it was worded poorly. But a quick translation for you guys. Basically what he said is he friends would give him hell for a day or so not that they are going to totally abandon him and treat him as an outcast. I don't about you guys, but I have friends exactly like that and I do that to them as well. I don't see where he is insecure or anything, this thread has developed more about peoples opinions than anything so respect them and don't be a jerk behind the keyboard whether it be someone who likes playing runescape or one who likes killing time around town. If you have fun doing either then I don't see what is the problem.

Thanks for the support on the matter.

But by all means, this has been a fun conversation/debate/thing. Feel free to keep the responses comming :D

I totally agree. I am NOT a nerd or a geek or anything and i play rs.

The problem is, everyone says that.

Nope. I'm a nerd, a geek, a braniac, poindexter, and even a level 4 Sorcerer. And I play RS.

But the reason why RS has such a negative stigma even, or should I say especially, in the gaming community is for a variety of reasons. 1. Jagex advertises that this game is for everybody regardless of age. Look at the fascist censor, for example. This leads to people believing that this is a kids game. 2. The amount of grinding contained within. Every MMORPG and almost every RPG has some grinding. But Runescape holds the title for grindiest game of the year for seven years running. 3. The graphics. Oh, I know about the huge update and I admit that Runescape has never looked better. But compared to other modern games? Not so good. And anyone who doesn't play won't know that the graphics have improved. 4. The leveling system. As others have said, the leveling system requires no skill or talent. Just clicking. Click, click, click. 5. Combat. Runescape has one of the worst combat systems I've ever seen. Everything is about preparation and what you bring. Experience and "skill" have minimal jurisdiction. 6. Customer Support, or the lack thereof. Jagex provides us with customer support only slightly better than the IRS and slightly worse than a group of trained chimpanzees. 7. The maturity. Need I go further? And 8., the lack of a free, player governed, market. This may not matter to a lot of people, but to us poindexters, it means a lot.

And that is why RS has a negative stereotype.

If the CORPORAL beast is this hard, imagine how hard a GENERAL or COLONEL beast would be. a corporal is not even an admirable rank in armies that use that ranking system.

Yeah, it is a pking minigame, so any arguments anybody makes will probably be biased.

The best way this will end :Everybody just says,"I'm not arguing with you anymore, goodbye."

The worst way this will end: I don't really know, psychological warfare? Worldwide thermonuclear war? Pie eating contest?

Described perfectly, those are all the reasons why its so harshly criticized amongst the gaming community as a whole and not taken seriously by hardcore gamers.

Good topic skully :D

I for one know the reason why some people do. They believe the game is rubbish with its graphics and they think it is boring. They are looking to a fast paced game like console games and not long term goal achieving games. They dismiss any bit that people say is good of it and then state its nerdy because its long term

Meh, the fact is most who dislike the game have never played it or played it for a very short amount of time, so cannot judge it properly. Like all games to really get an impression of it you need to play it for a while. But first impressions count, and RS doesn't really have a great start to it. I know they've changed the tutorial and it's more interesting that the previous tutorial but it's still quite boring. With most games no matter how good it is if the start is boring, then you're not really inclined to carry on playing it. With RS it doesn't really start to get decent till you reach the higher levels, it's a shame really that a game with as much depth as RS can be waved off in a second because of a boring start.

While I appreciate that's a matter of opinion, you'd be hard pushed to find anyone outside of the RuneScape community (which is itself a weak community - another reason people dislike RuneScape) that feels the same way most RSers do about long-term goals.

I for one will admit spending hours a day in front of a computer screen chasing a totally virtual goal is nerdy, and is against the social norm. Moreover, I regret doing it for all those months. I'm not gonna pretend to think otherwise because I'm part of a RuneScape fansite.

But seriously, this isn't exclusive to RuneScape, so drop the persecution complexes people. The stereotype applies to anyone who sits inside a house whiling their time away on computers.

I just don't understand what the difference is between getting a 99 on RS and getting a highscore or something on an XBOX or PS3 which no-one seems to have a problem with where I'm from.

This is how i see it. Debating what a nerd is, is what sometimes makes people nerds. I admit to being a nerd, yes, but I still have a life. Most people associate no lifers with nerds, right? Well, right now i AM no lifing for 99 in a skill  ... but w/e, its only for 10 days which i will have nothing better to do :P. If you were to work out in a gym all day every week every month, you'd probably have no life, right?

I only have a PS2 and PSP but tbh I got bored of the PSP about the second week I had it, and the 4th month with the PS2 yet Runescape has lasted 2 years now.

Consoles and one player games get boring very fast, Runescape is always changing and has a community, which is why I'd rather get a 99 in a skill than a high score on PS2 or whatever like someone said.

I still don't think its the worst game as far as grinding goes. My friend who plays WoW has 2 characters maxed out, and he complains of them making it too easy nowadays, the only time I ever see him on (I use xfire pretty handy if you play online games like CoD or something) is a couple times a week to raid. Graphics wise I agree but what do you expect playing a Java game?

Well, I've never seen or heard of a game that takes as long to max out as Runescape. Not even Disgaea, where the characters could become a level 9999. If you know of any games that do, then show me and I'll gladly withdraw the statement. The graphics, though excellent for Java, are still poor. To the average gamer, it doesn't matter how great the graphics are in comparison to the norm for that software, what matters is how it stacks up compared to other games.

Ahh, is that so? I've played Runescape since April of 05. And guess what? My skill total has yet to jump past the 1400s. It all depends on how much you play it and someone playing 24/7 on RS will take longer to level than someone playing 24/7 on any other games. The experience needed to level up increases exponentially while the experience received from the training methods rises linearly.

I have been playing Runescape from the very beginning, and to this day, virtually no one, even my family, knows how much time I have put in to this game and my clan over the years. I keep my Runescape life extremely separate from my real life, and it has worked out well.

Play silkroad, its soley combat/trader based and I know a guy that has played 2 years of it and still hasn't maxed out. The only time efficient way to level up is to power level in a party.

Yes you are probably someone who thinks they are bursting full of knowledge on MMORPG's and have only played 1 mmo......... please don't have me waste my time making another post if you are just going to let the bs spew out of your mouth.

First, there's the RS stereotype that RS is a poor man's WoW, that Runescape is not a real MMO.

And everyone playing MMOs is a no life nerd that needs a girlfriend. :wall:

It's pretty sad

actualy i do have a girlfriend.... when i was in mn. with her at the hotel which has a computer in lobby i would sit there and play rs with her right next to me.... she doesnt play... finds it boring.... but still i have a gf, and i play rs.... i have a job... and i play rs..... and yes i have a life... or at least i think i do lol.... i dont play rs for more than 3-4 bhours though... used to but now it gets boring sometimes.
