The RS Stereotype

(Some people actually do that... for the life of me I can't figure out why.)

Well it is called an MMORPG. Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. So it is like the Final Fantasy games. You're a guy but play a girl character (z0mg). Also think about the girl's side of view. 90% of RPGs' playable characters are male.

Essentially it comes down to self confidence about your real life, or the lack there of.

Many people who play this game (if you read the other thread about lying to people or being honest about if you play the game or not, you'll see what I mean) simply don't have the confidence or don't think their friends will still like them if they admitted they played.

Absoultly true. I find it depressing when people say RuneScape or whatever MMO is their "little secret". I'm not saying to reveal it out to the world when it doesn't care, but to hide it under a sheet at call costs is ridicilious.(SP)

Well if you hang around people who don't play the game but know about it, you will find that they often say things like "That guy plays runescape? Wow. What a total nerd. That game sucks [wagon]."

So therefore, if you said you played runescape, it would be reasonable to assume that people would think you're a total nerd.

Look I'm not saying to bring up RuneScape in every conversation, but to flat out deny that you don't play because you're scared they're going to call you a nerd is moronic. Besides, if those people are THAT ignorant, then why are you even hanging out with them? Unless you're ignorant yourself on other things...

Because that's the way it works. If you don't hang out with the people who call others a nerd, the only people left are the nerds themselves. Not that there is anything wrong with being a nerd. I would just rather have people think highly of me than think I'm a looser.

I have to agree with him. I've just recently come back from quitting (Probably never would have it hadn't been from a huge *** grounding), but anyway if anyone were ask me today I would lie. It's just not the "cool" thing to do. For whoever said runescape isn't better than anything, I'm going to have to disagree with you. I think you gave the example of weightlifting (Which I hate weight training, only time I do it is during basketball season (Which is 2/3 counting offseason tbh)), well that does help you physically, what does runescape give back to you? It's just fun, and if you don't enjoy it then you need to quit. And for the person who was saying it wasn't masculine, I have to agree with them. If I were to ask a girl what she did in her spare time and she said WoW or RS (Which I did have a girlfriend who picked up WoW, and she pretty much got sucked into the game, but that whole mess was going nowhere fast anyway.) I would think hmmm. But I wouldn't think less of that person or insult them for it, nor would I insult anyone else for playing a game for fun. But that's the way I feel about it.

I'm 12, and i play runescape quite alot. But Hey, everyone likes games right? Whats the difference between Call of duty four and runescape? Whats the difference between Halo 3 and runescape? They are both games! Just because a certain type of game amuses you does not mean you are a "low life" or "Sad" I've seen plenty of high lvls be called that. Just because they are a high level doesnt nessacarily mean they spend all day on the computer. (:

(bleep) All haters I see, Cause I hate that you breath, I see you duck you little punk you lil freakin disease.

Not true. Many people who aren't nerds don't call other people nerds. You're talking about one type of person and appling it to the entire society. And highly of you? Who? Everyone? If you're trying to impress everyone good luck. Not everyones gonna remember you for your 'highness'. You're only wasting your time...Now if you want to look impressive in front of some/certain people, thats understandable. But it better be the right ones that are worth it.

Other than that I have to agree with Derrick on everything he said.

Well, RuneScape is called a nerd's game because of the graphics. People just care about graphics that require like 3GB of RAM and 2.5+ GHZ. That's really the main point...

I play Runescape and Crysis. If I told my friends about the former, I think their heads would explode. FPShooters are designed to be visually attractive, since the main element of the game is the environment you're playing in. MMOs are more focused on the quality of the players, and on that level most MMOs are equal. I'm perplexed when my friend labels me a GFX [cabbage], yet cringes at the mention of pixellated Runescape.

By the way, graphics are usually processed by the GPU ;)

Video games in general fit the nerd stereotype. Runescape, as an MMORPG, is even further along the nerd spectrum just because of the way it's played. But I don't think it's so much the game you play as much as how much you play video games. Also, I don't think playing it makes you a nerd since I don't believe in labels. It may be nerdy, but it doesn't make someone a nerd.

Now you think nerds are loosers? (how you spell loser) Odds are you'll end up working for one.

Ok. Let's get something straight here. I DID NOT say "I would just rather be thought of highly than be a looser". I said "I would just rather have people think highly of me than THINK THAT I'M A LOSER". I am talking about other people's opions. (And I accidently held down the O button too long.) I'll type a little more, just so you can have a little bit of insight into my life.

1st grade: Some girl makes up lies about me. I deny them. I get tagged as a "liar" for most of elementary school. I don't have many friends. This leads me to be a quiet person.

5th grade: People realise they're being morons about something that happened in 1st grade. I have many friends. Mainly the "cool" people. But am still a quiet person due to the past.

6th grade: I get into Runescape. I become friends with the more "nerdy" people. I am still good friends with all the "cool" people.

7th grade: All the "cool" people get over-concerned with their self image. I don't hang out with them anymore, but am still friends with most. One of my best friends who was a "gamer type" decides he wants to be cool and goes to hang out with all the "skaters". He becomes a total jerk and says a bunch of [cabbage] about me. By the end of the year, I become a total "nerd". Not nerdy in how I act or dress or anything. I'm just nerdy in what I do in my free time.

8th grade: One of my friends from elementary school asks me to hang out with him and some other people I used to know. After hanging out with these guys for a while, we start to get interested in skating. By the end of the year we start to get bored with skating. I talk less to my friends that are considered "nerds", but am friends with them. I'm friends with my old friends again too, although we don't hang out.

9th grade: Me and the friends I hang out with start to become friends with more people due to highschool. We're now sort of a "post-skater" group. At this point we all start to get involved in console gaming. By the end of the year, I become friends with one of my main friends that is "nerd". I'm basicly friends with everybody aside from the jocks and the total stoners (most of them anyway).

My point:

Don't ry to act like you know more than me, or have experienced more than me.(concerning nerds/losers and such.)

If one my friends asked what I did this weekend, and I said I played Halo for 20 hours, he would just be like

"HOLY [cabbage] MAN! WHAT THE HELL????"

Now if I told him I played runescape for 5 hours, he would be like "Dude that game sucks. I hate you just for playing it".

I don't see why people consider MMO players to be losers or outcasts or anything like that. I personally play RS when I'm not doing anything else, and often go out with friend and socialise and play sports. I like Runescape becasue of the fact you're always palying it with other people. When I have played non-MMO computer games in the past, if they're on the internet I'll be bored in about an hour or two maximum, and if it's a big computer game I've bought myself, it might keep me amused for a week or two. I find that if I can't interact with other players while playing a game, I very quickly lose interest.

I always mocked any of my friends at school who tried to mock me for playing Runescape. Their only jibe was "Ha! You play Runescape!" These guys would go home and play fake-football on a computer or PS2 all on their own, while I would play a game that would allow me to do things that are impossible in real life, and I would play it with thousands of other people. In my opinion, that makes Runescape the least-loser-orientated game there is.

When I was still at school, (I'm now at college) I was always looked down upon by those who knew I played, I was seen as a geek and such. Despite having plenty of friends and still going out/socializing I was still seen as nerdy. :?

It used to make me quite paranoid and want to quit, but now I'm very comfortable with it, people don't really care now, they see that I love Rs and that it's just a hobby like any other lol. ::'

The RS stereotype doesn't really exist IMO.

For example, my best friend plays RuneScape and let me tell you a bit about him. One of the best volleyball players in Canada at age 15, dating a hot girlfriend, not a virgin, has a good social life and grades. And yet still plays RuneScape.

For me and him, this game is something we do in free time. The key is prioritizing.

I don't know much about what is included in this stereotype, but I don' advertise that I play either. I used to play it in school sometimes, but when people started telling me the game was dumb, I quit playing in public. :P However, I don't think people that play these types of games are "nerds" or "losers" (probably has something to do with the fact that I play these games :P). As more people start playing these games though, the stereotype won't be so popular. As people grow more mature also, they'll realise that stereotypes are dumb.

Its because the stereotype of a runescape player is an overweight, balding, un-hygienic 30-something who has no job and plays for 15+ hours a day.

No no. That's Warcraft. Runescape is a teenage (between 14 and 19) player, nerdy, with a mild to medium case of acne, and may do one of the following: Belong to some sort of scifi convention, do very well in school, or have a retainer.

I have no problem telling people I play RS, probably because I don't look like the gaming type or they've never heard of Runescape before (most likely the latter).

Person: So, what do you play?

Me: Runescape.

Person: What's that, is that like DotA?

Me: *long explanation*

Person: Oh cool, so do you like DotA?

Why should I admit that I play Runescape and potentially suffer some amount of grief when it really doesn't trouble me that much to cover my Runescape-playing up?

Yes, some of my friends play WoW, and people tease them to some extent - mostly our other friends - but it's in a joking manner.

Still, I don't particularly want to be the subject of those little pokes.

Where I live, people don't play Runescape.

Maybe it's different where you guys live.

But Runescape is treated like the Bubonic Plague here. At least in public it is ;)

I have been told, while playing runescape, that, because I play runescape, I have no life, by people who have never met me, and who were also playing runescape. :XD:

I pointed this out to one person, and the conversation went something like this.

n00b: Lol you with your 99 fishing, at least I have a life.

me: You play runescape.

n00b: I barely play at all like less than an hour a day.

me: You're on a member's world. You're paying 5 bucks a month to play this game.

n00b: I only play rs to talk to my friends

me: All your friends play runescape enough that you can talk to them even only playing less than an hour a day?

me: Doesn't that mean all your friends have no life?

n00b: stfu nub

...Well, I paraphrased a little, but :XD:

Btw, have any of you ever considered that if everyone who played this game really did have no life, we'd all be zombies, meandering clumsily down the streets moaning "Braaaains! Braaaaaains! I want braaaaaaains to finish Creature of Fenkenstraaain!"
