My favourites are:

Power: Dark Moor, Hibria, Manilla Road, Nocturnal Rites, Running Wild, etc.

Thrash: Dark Angel, Morbid Saint, Kreator, etc.

I can't say I've dug very deep in any metal genre, so I've yet to find many of the gems.

whats with metal heads obsession with sub-genres never understood

i can understand some but how much of a difference can there be between doommetal and deathmeatal or metalcore and deathcore :?:

i will never understand but then again im not much of a metal fan

We speak of differences in velocity and vocal technique...amongst other things. About the same difference between punk rock and progressive rock.

Can someone define these metals for me?! The only ones I know are death and heavy metal...

There's a porn metal? Good lord...

Hardcore metal? XXX hardcore metal? those are two types (wasn't purposely) of P I have (*cringe*) seen... They also mean Hardcore (genre of music, that was ruined after it turned into metal) and a straight edge version of that genre of music...

Death Metal

(this one does bend genres a bit at times, but still.)

Power Metal

| Drone (Sped up!)

Industrial (with a hint of drone)

Folk Metal

Grunge (would you guys consider this kind of grunge a sub genre of metal?)

Heavy Metal

There is a small tidbit of some of the various genres. Pretty much said you should be able to tell the difference quite easily between these, and you'll see why sub genres are needed.

Sludge/Stoner for Weedeater, Bonzilla, Electric wizard, Acid bath, Neurosis.

Brazilian thrash for Sepultura, Chakal, Sarco[bleep]a, Asesino and Torture squad mostly

Death for Krisiun, Ghoul, Possessed and many more.

Some industrial; Nailbomb, Mushroomhead.

Grind/deathcore: Aborted, Brujerias, Corpulate, A life once lost, Animosity, Brain drill, Elysia.

That's what I usually listen a bit folk/black but that's just for laughs :P.

It is a sub-genre. It's metal fused with hardcore punk (I assumed you knew that already though).

While you guys may hate the genre for any reason whatsoever, there are people who LIKE it.

Death: Like Thrash, but heavier. Often uses Guttural or Growling vocal styles.

Where did the death metal get its name from? Is it from growing successful flowers?

---

Folk: Very catchy, metal versions of traditional folk songs.

Bob Dylan or Pete Seeger? This reminds me of the Brittany spears metal cover (but folk)!

---

Black: Like Thrash, but uses less Bass guitar and traditionally are poorly recorded.

Thought black was satanic (then again Satanism technically is not classified religion)

---

Beer: Thrash, but has an Irish jig kind of rhythm. Good to drink to.

Two step?(I see a lot of people drinking wile even listening to a straight edge two step band)?

---

Sludge: A combination of Doom metal and Hardcore punk styles, with shouted vocals.

Hatebreed and converge?

---

Extreme: Often used in the Underground metal scene. Can refer to Thrash, Speed, Death, Black Metal and anything heavier.

What? Never heard, from my years at the shows...

PS wouldn't thrash be screaming vocals?

While you guys may hate the genre for any reason whatsoever, there are people who LIKE it.

That's why it isn't metal (yes I added elements because that's what it is).

That doesn't make it metal, though.

Speaking of which, why do people want their precious -cores to be metal? Why does it [bleep]ing matter? Also, how do two great genres (hardcore punk and metal) fused together suck so [bleep]ing bad? It's a travesty, because it should be so [bleep]ing good! but it [bleep]ing sucks!

Oh, and I assume you know EVERYTHING about metal.

And the last paragraph is very opinionated. <_<

Death metal got its name from either the song 'Death Metal' by Possessed from the album Seven churches, which is considered the first ever example of Death metal. Either that or its a spelling mistake when someone refer the the band, Death's, metal and put it as Death metal and it has stuck since. The first way happened for Black metal too, when Venom made the song called 'Black Metal'.

Most of the Thrash vocals are considered shouting, but youre right, it does use screaming too.
