Kid Kills Himself Recreating Halo

Of course the media would portray it as the game industry's fault that the 11 year old died, when it really is the fault of the parents for allowing a 11 year old child access to a gun. Halo isn't to be blamed for this, the kid might have tried to re-enact a violent movie the same day if he didn't have Halo, the only thing this is down to is the lack of responsibility shown by the parents.

Honestly, how do you shoot yourself in the head without aiming there directly, which doesn't happen in Halo? That's what I really don't understand.

He thought it was unloaded, perhaps looked down the barrel to make sure it wasn't loaded and either the trigger was pulled to make sure it wasn't loaded or [cabbage] happened? :|

The parents and the media seem to be covering up for the obviouse negligence by the parents. It says the child had been shooting before, but surely if he had he would have been tought never to look down the barrel, always point the gun away from yourself. And why blame the game, if he didn't have the game, they would blame the music on whatever music he had in his cd player, if he had no cd player it would be the next hing etc, nobody ever blames the people who are REALLY responbile, the parents.

...I mean, unless it was ricochet or something, but then they definitely would have put that in the article to exemplify the "poor accident victim" image of this kid.

I guess he forgot or was never taught rule number one: It is always loaded.

And the way the media act like music or games or movies are to blame, just to cover for the incompetent parents... Seriously, kids and guns don't go together well. If you want to take them shooting, fine, but when you aren't keep the gun locked up.

Don't blame Halo, he was in no way acting out Halo.

-He shot himself. With a bullet. Impossible except for sniper rebounds in Halo, and a .22 is not a sniper rifle. It sounds like he looked down the barrel without checking for a round in the chamber. If parents are going to buy their kid a gun, they should bloody well drill those safety rules into the kid's brain for weeks before they give it to him.

-How do they know he was acting out a game or movie at all? I never did when I was that age, I just made [cabbage] up, just like everyone else I knew... I guess they looked in the console or that was the only game the parents knew... -.-

-It is a game. Blaming games is just absurd. Like saying Jeffrey Dahmer did what he did because he played Kirby games.

I guess the media will take any chance they get to blame everything on the games and grab cheap shock headlines with no story, rather than work to cover the real problems. Didn't they blame most of those high school shootings on Doom, instead of emotional problems?

There is no meaning or truth in life but that which we create for ourselves.

I wish people would stop condemning the video game scapegoat only to turn around and blame the gun. When I was eleven I owned a .22 and a 4/10, not to mention various air rifles. The reason that kid is dead and I am not is that I am not a fool. I listened when my parents instructed me in gun safety. Sure, the parents were negligent in locking the gun safely away and making sure it was unloaded, and if they failed to give the boy instruction then they are even more at fault. However, the fact that the kid had a gun does not have anything to do with it in itself.

Blame the parents all you want, but it's their fault not the gun's. And they are not to blame for giving the kid a gun in the first place, either.

It's nothing to do with the game.

I can just about maybe understand the "need" for a family to have a gun in the house... perhaps. What was an 11 year old doing with his own rifle though? In fact, forget that - what the hell could an 11 year old actually do with a gun if someone did break into his house?

Why was the magazine kept in a separate place, but the gun was kept loaded?

It's the parent's stupidity that's the only cause of this. They'd be prosecuted for manslaughter here on grounds of negligence.

It was probably the fault of the kid and his parents. The magazine was in a separate place, but the [wagon] forgot to eject the round in the chamber, which is one of the most fundamental rules of shooting. Always.

And it looks to me like something along the lines of him dropping the rifle and it discharging, or looking down the barrel (both things you never do) and setting it down too hard.

I'd give my kid(s) a gun(s?), but I'd always keep the trigger and magazine somewhere where they didn't know about it, like my parents. You should never keep a fully assembled, ready-to-fire weapon in the house anyways.

To everyone saying it's the parents' and child's and gun's fault: Saying things like that would be like calling for my parents to be jailed if I accidentally cut myself when I was chopping something with a knife and bled out.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

I mean, seriously, how did this really happen? The only thing I can think of is a team kill, but he was alone....

we can exclude exsplosive barrels, plasma grenades, frag grenades, self-incineration, jumping off the playing field, and being killed by the gaurdians. I've never heard of a sniper rifle richochet before though :-k

The kid has access to the gun, he's not educated on gun safety, he doesn't know the gun is loaded, he stupidly tries it on his head for fun... and the VIDEOGAME takes the rap for his and the family's stupidity? The media just loves to find reasons to say videogames are the cause of today's horrors in the world. It gets annoying.

But then again, you fail to realize that 101% of the people in this universe hate you. Yes, humankind's hatred against you goes beyond mathematical possibilities.
That tears it. I'm starting an animal rebellion using my mind powers. Those PETA bastards will never see it coming until the porcupines are half way up their asses.

That happened to a friend of mine while he was cleaning his painball gun. There was a paintball stuck in the barrel with enough pressure on it to fire right as it was pointed it at his face. He wasn't hurt too bad because it was only a paintball gun, but imagine if it was a regular gun. I was there when it happened. Scared the [cabbage] out of me at first, but then I laughed my [wagon] off when I found out he was ok. He had purple paint all over his face and had a black-eye for a little while afterwards.

Actually that has happened before, the guy who did it, whose video I can't find, even got recon armor for it. Maybe that's why the kid shot himself, "can has recon pl0x?"

The media uses video games as a whipping boy, much as West Virginia is Pennsylvania's whipping boy (sorry I couldn't resist), its something we all have to get used to.

Maybe we could put the media and the fanboys in a small room and let them fight to the death, whoever wins goes to jail for murder. Everyone wins. /sarcasm

Poor child. -.- I don't see why it would be normal to give an 11 year old a rifle. :?

I had a gun when I was 7. Of course it was actually locked up and what not and I knew the dangers of having one.....but yeah.... it's not that unusual for a kid to have a .22, especially if he lived in the country like the article said.

Wait, didn't it say he regularly shot the gun? So it's not like he took the gun just to recreate Halo, he used it a lot, and was obviously high or something

Yeah, woulda been interesting to know if he'd been doing drugs or sumfin.
